3. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable Development
Education is the only means for the all-round
development of human beings.
According to UNESCO, Education is the single
most powerful tool to promote peace, human
development, equality, eradication of poverty and
achieve sustainable development.
Peace can be defined, most simply, as ‘the absence
of conflict. A state of harmony.’
4. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable Development
Sustainable development implies using renewable
natural resources in a manner which does not
eliminate or degrade them, or otherwise diminish
their usefulness for future generations.
An "unsustainable situation" occurs when natural
capital (the sum total of nature's resources) is used
up faster than it can be replenished.
Educating people toward becoming peace agents is
central to the task of peace building.
Peace building refers generally to the long-term
period of building peaceful communities, a
desirable goal.
5. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable Development
Peace is the sign of development and prosperity.
It is the state of being free form any kind of
human conflict and violence.
The power of love by nature
always overcomes and
transcends the love of power.
When the power of love
overtakes the love of power,
then and only then can there
be Peace.
6. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable Development
According to the UNESCO, it is based on four
pillars of learning - learning to know, learning to
be, learning to live together, learning to do and
learning to transform oneself and society. In fact,
two out of the four pillars of education suggested
by the Delors report (1996), namely learning to
live together and learning to be, are directly
related to peaceful living.
Peace building and sustainable development is a
global responsibility and solidarity between
generations, gender, different cultures and
countries.
7. “Sustainable development is development that
meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.”
(World Commission on Environment and Development,
Brundtland Commission Report, 1987, p. 43)
It is not a fixed state of harmony, but rather a process of
change in which the exploitation of resources, the
direction of investments, the orientation of
technological development, and institutional change
are made consistent with future as well as present
needs." (Brundtland Report, 1987)
Education for Peace Building and Sustainable Development
8. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable
Development in a Holistic View
Education (both formal and non-formal) is
indispensable to changing people’s attitudes. It is
critical for achieving ethical awareness, values
and attitudes, skills and behavior consistent with
peace and sustainable development and meeting
out present environmental, societal and
economic challenges.
Hence, the role of Education is essential tool in
creating peace and Sustainable Development.
9. Major Challenges in Peace and Sustainable Development
Making balance between present and future
generations; and within the present generation
To integrate sustainable science and education
Challenges in building peace and fostering
sustainable development, international
understanding and cultural diversity
To strengthen co-ordination and collaboration
between different levels of education for creating
peace and sustainable development
To mitigate information and knowledge gaps
between different parts of the world.
10. To build sustainable peace in societies that created
inequality, widespread poverty, racial or gender
discrimination, social and economic disparity
To turn peace building and sustainable development
into a reality for people of the entire world
Resolving problems like-
inefficient use of energy, water and other resources
increased pollution and abuses of human rights
overuse of personal transportation, consumerism,
etc. that resulted in a complexity of interrelated
problems affecting social, economic and natural
aspects of everyday life.
Major Challenges in Peace and Sustainable Development
11. To increase Indicators of Peace and Sustainable
Development
Gross National Happiness (GNH)
Human Development Index (HDI)
Ecological Footprint (EF)
The Happy Planet Index (HPI)
Big challenge to promote eight goals of
Millennium Declaration of United Nations in the
year 2000 for reduction of poverty, reduction of
infant mortality, reduction of the HIV/AIDS,
malaria spreading and a sustainable development
until 2015.
Major Challenges in Peace and Sustainable Development
13. Role of Education for Peace Building and
Sustainable Development (PBSD)
To extend Indigenous Knowledge Systems to
advance the PBSD concept. Institutions of higher
education, as well as dedicated research
institutions, must invest in new research which
put PBSD as the core paradigm.
Protection and managing the natural resource
base of economic and social development
Education should be recognised as a process by
which human beings and societies can reach their
fullest potential.
14. Role of Education for Peace Building and
Sustainable Development
A culture of peace must replace the current culture
of violence if we and our common home, planet
Earth, are to survive.
Conflict Resolution, Transformation and Prevention
Development based on Justice and Human Rights
To develop international goodwill and brotherhood
(vasudhev kutumbkum) from early age of children.
Human beings should be educated to “live
together”.
More focus on developing technologies that are
“environment friendly.
15. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable
Development
Wise use of natural resources anywhere on earth
Spread awareness about climate change, climate
variability, extreme events and disaster
management
Environmental monitoring and preservation
Final Target of Education -
To Understand the relation between the limitation
of the earth and human activities
To act sustainable way, which depends on the
situation of the region
16. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable
Development
Sustainable and equitable use of resources for
meeting the needs of the present and future
generations without causing damage to
environment
To reduce the current speed of consumption of
resources
To know the life in comparison with the other
countries
Respect and care for community of life
Improve the quality of human life
Conserve the earth’s viability and diversity
17. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable
Development
UNESCO MGIEP should play vital role to build
peace and sustainable development at all levels of
education, both formal and informal as a catalyst
for innovation and transformation.
Nations should reduce and eliminate
unsustainable patterns of production and
consumption, and promote appropriate
demographic policies.
More involvement of local communities in
environmental management
18. Education for Creating Peace and Sustainable Development
Improve basic needs such as food, shelter, health,
education, and other emotional and social
necessities.
Investment in children to eradicate poverty, non-
discrimination, social inclusion, boost shared
prosperity, gender equality and enhance inter-
generational equity.
Education (as mentioned in NCF-2005, NCERT)
must be able to promote values that foster peace,
humanness and tolerance in a multicultural
society.
19. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable Development
More emphasis on the basis of peace and
sustainable development are such as freshwater
resource management, ocean health, climate
change, renewable energy, natural disaster
reduction, biodiversity loss, and capacity building in
science, technology and innovation etc.
Mass media should support a campaign to raise
public awareness of sustainability, convey
information of sustainable development (peace,
equity, and justice).
Get people to interact and discuss their vision for
their area.
20. Education for Peace Building and Sustainable
Development
More Political will is needed.
Govt. should provide comprehensive training in
issues of peace, sustainable development,
environmental governance, natural resource
management, and environmental conflict
management from both ecological and social
perspectives.
Nations should share knowledge and innovative
technologies to achieve the goal of sustainability.
21. Conclusion
A holistic understanding of peace is needed for
the youth to be educated on the different facets of
peace. It is in human nature to 'strive' for
harmony and peace.
Education for sustainable development plays a
key role in promoting values for peace and
commitment to engage in responsible individual
and cooperative actions.
In this new age of limited resources, we need to
nurture the boundless energy and creativity of
young women and men to tackle complex new
challenges.
22. Peace Building and
Sustainable Development is
viewing the world with respect
of natural laws, with
understanding of diversity and
with affection and
determination to do whatever
possible to secure a better
future for people, the
environment and the natural
resources upon they live.
