The first column in the chart is for “Redirect.” This is because a top issue to me, and
many others, is that a URL shortening service does a “301 redirect” to the full URL. You
can help make Shortly better by reporting issues or help translating Shortly into your
language. Learn more Preferences You can choose your preferred shortener service,
decide how to display results, login your accounts, set custom shortener, and change
keyboard shortcut — all in the Shortly preference. That’s because there are only so many
3 character combinations that can be used (is.gd has a nice tutorial about this). View

Get Shortly extension now →. 3 ways of display Shortly 2.1 comes with a new Popover,
a clean Toolbar Mode as default, and still the old-school Alert Window display options of
your choice. That number stands for the code a web server issues to a browser (or search
engine) when a URL is requested.
As I remember, short urls were necessary at a time, when a lot of urls containing &=+”
showed up in blog-comments or other site-content. Login support Login to your Google,
bit.ly or bit.ly pro account to enjoy better integration with your shortener service. These
weren’t interpreted by the browser, and resulted in broken lines, and thus links. Shortly
supports the rel="shortlink" proposal. Please visit its project page for more information
on implementing native shortlinks on your site. Custom URL shortener Got your own
shortener service? You can now link it to Shortly with the new endpoint support. With
clean urls nowadays, better link-interpretation in browsers and e-mail-clients this
problem seems solved.
The way that Bit.ly Pro is currently set up, having your own domain does not mitigate the

Main Features Native shortlinks Take advantage of the native shortlinks. As Winer says,
Bit.ly could, for example, “echo all your shortened URLs to an Amazon S3 bucket that
you control,” but so far at least, Bit.ly Pro does not offer a way to export your shortened
data.
Keep in mind that over time, even services offering short paths won’t be able maintain
this. To create your own endpoint for custom URL shortener, please visit our
documentation. Localization not available in extension preference due to Safari
limitations. Simply click and hold the Shortly button, and you're good to go. Shortly
cannot auto-copy the shortlink to clipboard for you due to security limitations of Safari.
When those have all been used, a shortening service either has to recycle old
combinations or expand the number of characters used.

A couple months earlier I had built something quite similar (scr.im, a little service to
convert your email into a short URL before sharing it on social sites, forums et. If you're
installing Yourls in a sub-folder of your domain, you'll need to make one more tweak. I
opted for a little extra processing when the shortened URL is being created and less every
time it is being retrieved, as I was expecting far more retrievals than creations. I think it is
more a matter of preference than anything else. Sound odd to be talking to him about
Google’s URL shortener? Well, the service began as a “20% time” project by engineers in
his group, time engineers at Google are allowed to spend working on whatever they’d
like. Up to that point, URL shorteners helped people tweet multiple links without using
up their 140 characters. For the likely more sensible, password-protected setup, substitute
the username and password values just a bit further down the file.
URL shorteners reached their peak in usefulness just before Twitter began encoding all
links with its t.co URL shortener. For the former, open option, simply change the value
next to "YOURLS_PRIVATE" to true. So Cutts is knowledgeable about the project and
serving as one of the de facto spokespeople for it.
Ozh: The idea of running my own personal URL shortener sprung to my mind in April
2009. The reason I didn’t use a process like that is because it would require a conversion
every time a shortened URL is looked up. al., still running but sold since) and I thought it
would be cool to run my own URL shortener.
Skydiver, Thanks for reading and for the comment. You can read more about URL
shortening at Wikipedia.
As well as allowing you to create custom URLs for your site, it’ll also provide detailed
information about the users engaging with your updates ranging from a general
performance overview to a detailed link-by-link basis, should you so wish. Back then,
Bit.ly was a popular choice.
When you're all done with everything, re-save the file with a new name, config.php. Save
and close that file.
I talked with the head of Google’s web spam team, Matt Cutts, a bit about the reasons
behind the service. Now, onto the tools to actually manage the automatic shortening of
the URLs you share.
Finally, decide whether you want to let everybody and his brother create short URLs
through your site, or whether you'll hand out passwords. Your solution would certainly
work. In a file named .htaccess in the main Yourls folder (which might be hidden, so
enable your "show hidden files" setting), remove the "#" from the beginning of the line,
and add in your folder names after the RewriteBase /—in my case, that became
RewriteBase /u/, because I installed Yourls at thepurdman.com/u/. Also known as a
custom URL shorteners, custom link shortening services, link shorteners, private URL
shorteners, private label URL shorteners and closed link shorteners, these services work
similar to services such as TinyURL and Bitly and allow users to shorten very long links
into shorter ones that are better suited for e-mailing, instant messaging and for services
such as Twitter that restrict character counts. Today, every link in a tweet takes up a fixed
number of characters regardless of length; using your own link shortener is now less
important. Thanks for the feedback and happy PHPing!. This is a website all about vanity
URL shorteners. There’s also a neat real-time interaction feature worth checking out.
If you’re looking for help in finding the perfect domain name, look no further than here
for some tips.
So I never tried for DavidScott.com. Excellent post. I use David Meerman Scott (with my
middle name) professionally for SEO and other identity purposes related to the URL
aspect you mention. To a very limited extent it may obscure the destination of the URL,
though easily discoverable; this may be advantageous, disadvantageous, or irrelevant.
Failure to predict such problems with URL shorteners and investment in URL shortening
companies may reflect a lack of due diligence.
The main advantage of a short link is that it is, in fact, short, and can be easily
communicated and entered without error. Your last setup step is to fire up your FTP
client, command line, or web access tool and copy the contents of your Yourls folder to
your server. There are many "David Scott"'s out there including one of us who walked on
the moon, another who is a member of congress and still another who is an Irnonman
champion. Some of them allow you to override this, so that your path can have a
“custom” or “vanity” ending. Thanks for using me as an example. So when selecting a
service, this is another factor to consider.
In an effort to help us out, as our friend Nikola noted, “the good people of the Internet”
created a tool called an URL shortener. If you give it a URL of 30 characters or longer,
Twitter will shorten it using TinyURL. Until then, you can always use another service to
manually shorten your URLs.
Shortened internet links typically use foreign country domain names, and are therefore
under the jurisdiction of that nation. But because we do not have a short URL, we would
need to purchase a short URL. However, I do wish I had gotten DMScott.com because it
is shorter and would be the same as my Twiter ID. I am the only "David Meerman Scott".
That means you can have a custom name for your URL, such as these that lead to Search
Engine Land:
Victor - Wow. A short link which expires, or can be terminated, has some security
advantages.
Most of us do not have a very short URL for our blog because if we did, we could be
using this trick instead. I hope that will happen in the future. URL or link shorteners take
our long web addresses and give us a simple short URL that will fit into any tweet and
won’t break comments or blog posts.
Typically, URL shorteners make up a random path for your URLs — those /6Q8 or
/qu03e3 and other boring sounding names you’ve seen. Those with dedicated domains
can just drop those folders and files into the main access space, or the www section in
some cases, while those doing a sub-folder installation should drop them in that folder.
Twitter itself is used as a “client” by many people to publish their Tweets. Note that some
(but not all) of my social vanity URLs are dmscott such as vimeo.comdmscott. Libya,
for instance, exercised its control over the .ly domain in October 2010 to shut down vb.ly
for violating Libyan pornography laws. Now if you think about it, these domains are very
creative, so how can you find it quickly? Well you can use number of tools to find
domains, but we recommend using Domai.nr to find these cool names.
Put that into some URL shorteners, and they break — they’ll ignore everything from
the ? symbol onward and just point people at the Google home page. Unfortunately,
Twitter doesn’t allow for this default choice to be changed.
One good way to do this is to use Domai.nr, which links directly to registrars for many
domain extensions. I agree completely that breaking up the class into a set of more
single-responsibility classes working together is the way to go for production. Thank you
again for your feedback. Alex, Thank you very much for your feedback and point of
view. Unlike most vanity URL shorteners, these services allow anyone to create short
links to any URL on the Internet. I would really appreciate hearing more about your
suggestion for replacing the static properties. Readers of your tweet will see a partial link,
and if they hover over it, they’ll see the complete, original long link.
I have looked into this further, and found that I had made a mistake in the database table’s
schema. I felt it was an appropriate solution for values within the object that would not be
changing through its lifespan, but I am here to learn as well, and am certainly open to
correction :-) I will definitely be taking your advice to heart as I work on my next article.
A message will appear just below your tweet, telling you that the link will be shortened
automatically. If you can't find a link here, try the Wikipedia list of TLDs.
To access T.co, you simply paste a long link right in the status update field of Twitter.
Thank you very much to this poster for helping me to catch this bug!
In Internet years, TinyURL.com could be considered the grandfather of all URL
shorteners. For a URL shortener to be included on this website, it needs to be designated
for use only by a specific webiste, organization or group of people. Clicking it will make
a goo.gl URL and copy it to your clipboard.
It’s worth bearing in mind though that domains for different countries cost different
amounts, for example, if you wanted to register a domain in Puerto Rico (.pr) like
wrap.pr for your business then it would cost you $1,400.
Once you've found a domain you like, you'll need to register it. To make sure that the
short_code field is treated as binary, and therefore case sensitive, the type needs to be
VARBINARY. A URL shortener listed here may also be open for use by the public, but
restricted only for use with a company's service, app or other special functionality.
Simple extension to let you use Goo.gl, Google's URL shortener. We will get the code
sample and GitHub repo updated as soon as possible. The character count you see in your
status update includes the length of the shortened URL; exactly 20 characters, or 21 for
for https links. It’s been around for years, and was one of the first link shorteners to be
widely used on Twitter. But I was shocked when I tested it — so much so that I won’t
even link to the service. It’s still a useful application today, and it boasts the following
powerful features.
lin.cr: Originally, I had lin.cr on my list, because it was included with TweetDeck. As
anyone who is a regular reader of this site knows, your advice should carry a lot of
weight, and it does with me. I REALLY appreciate it! Happy PHPing!
That said, it’s important to note that this site is not about general, standalone URL
shortening services such as TinyURL, bit.ly or snurl.com. If it's not available, you'll need
to locate a registrar who handles the domain extension in question. Many extensions are
available from companies you already use for domain registration — such as GoDaddy or
Hover. After installation, right-click your Firefox toolbar, click "Customize", and drag the
Goo.gl button to a toolbar.
Once all of your virtual wires are connected, any URLs from your long domain will be
custom-shortened, provided that you are logged into your Bit.ly account. New in version
1.4.1 Actually fixed the CloudApp option. It also means that if you use the Digg short
URLs, none of the link credit passes to your page. You can now shorten the URL of an
RSS feed (requires OS X Lion). That functionality, as seen with The New York Times, is
only available at an enterprise-level Bit.ly partnership. That means the page is actually on
Digg itself — they’re making a page with the DiggBar and pulling in your content
without permission into a frame. Fixes some display problems on certain sites. It’s no
longer necessary to enter your email address or password in the settings with CloudApp
—you’ll be prompted for them if necessary. Bitly is now accessed securely. See full bio
I agree that you should pick more popular services if it’s important that the links will
work in a few months or years from now. Place your links on Facebook, Twitter, and
more!
You’ll still need that custom URL like tnw.to to shorten it to, but you won’t be burdened
with the need to actually make sure the service is always up and running and take care of
the hosting side of things. They come and go, but goo.gl, bit.ly and tinyurl are pretty safe
I would say.
Get paid to share your links on the Internet! Register for an account and start shrinking.
Like lin.cr, it does a 200 code. Added a “None” option. New in version 1.2 More reliable
on slower internet connections, or when the service takes longer to respond Now
compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) New in version 1.1 Added support for Google’s
URL shortener (goo.gl) Added support some custom services that return JSON data, like
ln.kg Fixed a bug where the area underneath the results bar would not be clickable after it
was dismissed New in version 1.0.1 Email addresses and passwords with special
characters (like ; or +) will now work correctly New in version 1.0Changes from the beta
release include: Improved handling and display of errors Improved the appearance of the
close button Make It Short is no longer available for RSS feeds since it’s not possible to
get the URL of these pages Hide previous updates. New in version 1.3 The copied URL is
no longer styled, so when you paste it will match the text around it. This set up will not
customize links to your site that others are sharing. New in version 1.4 Fixed the
CloudApp option. That said, you’ll need to make a few DNS changes to ensure the URL
you’ve purchased works.
The fun stops there. That’s not illegal, but it’s a tactic that died off years ago. It’s all kept
with Digg.
New in version 1.5 High resolution graphics for the new MacBook Pro with Retina
Display. When you reach those 17 million uniques per month, let us know, and we'll
show you how to get that rolling.
About the author Nicole Lee twitter googleplus Nicole Lee is a senior associate editor for
CNET, covering cell phones, Bluetooth headsets, and all things mobile. Added support
for Letterboxd.com short URLs (boxd.it). This allows you to only use “short url, short
link, or canonical meta tags”. She's also a fan of comic books, video games, and of
course, shiny gadgets. Added support for official short URLs on Readability and
Dribbble. Get paid for every person who visits your URLs.
A good Wireless-N access point can offer a range of up to 300 feet or even farther. For
example, if you just changed your domain to DomainB.com, but you still have plenty of
visitors coming to DomainA.com, you would use this to show them all of the existing
content that is located on the new domain, without the need to update both websites.
The URL is within the very fabric of our web, it cannot be killed off. Now, i want for my
homepage (retailA.com) to look like retailB.com withouth having to change my url to
retailB.com. If we get the design right, we can empower while clarifying; we can reduce
complexity while enhancing functionality; we can expand freedom while not
overwhelming with choice. You used TV or webTV as an example, but I think that is a
case for the URL actually — Our TV sets today are limited to just a few channels, and for
unique programming to exist it has to live within one of those channels, unfortunately —
because it’s the only access point to the content. From a usability point of view,
simplifying and even eradicating the URL is surely a good thing? For most people it’s
unsightly, complicated, and just plain clumsy. This distance, however, changes based on
the power of the devices involved, the environment, and, most importantly, the Wi-Fi
standard. The channel has the control, as opposed to the author and the authors ability to
be independent of the channel. My domain for example is retailA.com. The new
page/domain has subsequent/inner pages. My question is, how will any of the solutions
(especially solution 1 and 2) affect the inner pages of retailB.com? Thanks, Eileen
As a user experience designer, it’s on my discipline and peers to provide the right kind of
ideas and leadership. If you are using a CMS of some sort, they tend to have their own
redirects and rewrites also involved. The emergence of the permalink really is what
makes a URL most valuable. Typically, a Wi-Fi network is most viable within about 150
feet from the access point. Your misinterpretation of the web, and lack of knowledge and
respect for its design is apparent in the terrible high-exposure headline, and there’s also a
smell of rotten “apple” in the air.
Wi-Fi range: This is the radius an access point's Wi-Fi signal can reach. For a single piece
of content to exist online without mass-popularity and with complete independence.
Hello Dapo, It is difficult to say right off hand. The Wi-Fi standard also determines how
fast a wireless connection can be and is the reason Wi-Fi gets complicated and confusing,
especially when the Wi-Fi frequency bands are mentioned, which I just did. Sure it’s
powerful if you know what you’re doing, but I reckon it’s inevitable that we’ll soon move
away from using URLs at all, just relying on links and searches instead.
It sounds like you want what AOL had done back in the mid-nineties — where access to
websites were nothing more than buttons on a home screen and keywords. I
commissioned a provider to create me a new page and they assigned a different domain
retailB.com. Kindest Regards, Scott M
The first option will show all of the same content on one URL as you would another.
The .htaccess file is read from the top down, so there could be other rules involved as
well. Surely these are the things that good, thoughtful user experience design can
achieve!
Great article, but I’m not sure I agree with your conclusion.

A couple months earlier I had built something quite similar (scr.im, a little service to convert your email into a short URL before sharing it on social sites, forums et. If you're installing Yourls in a sub-folder of your domain, you'll need to make one more tweak. I opted for a little extra processing when the shortened URL is being created and less every time it is being retrieved, as I was expecting far more retrievals than creations. I think it is more a matter of preference than anything else. Sound odd to be talking to him about Google’s URL shortener? Well, the service began as a “20% time” project by engineers in his group, time engineers at Google are allowed to spend working on whatever they’d like. Up to that point, URL shorteners helped people tweet multiple links without using up their 140 characters. For the likely more sensible, password-protected setup, substitute the username and password values just a bit further down the file.
  • 4. URL shorteners reached their peak in usefulness just before Twitter began encoding all links with its t.co URL shortener. For the former, open option, simply change the value next to "YOURLS_PRIVATE" to true. So Cutts is knowledgeable about the project and serving as one of the de facto spokespeople for it. Ozh: The idea of running my own personal URL shortener sprung to my mind in April 2009. The reason I didn’t use a process like that is because it would require a conversion every time a shortened URL is looked up. al., still running but sold since) and I thought it would be cool to run my own URL shortener.
  • 5. Skydiver, Thanks for reading and for the comment. You can read more about URL shortening at Wikipedia. As well as allowing you to create custom URLs for your site, it’ll also provide detailed information about the users engaging with your updates ranging from a general performance overview to a detailed link-by-link basis, should you so wish. Back then, Bit.ly was a popular choice. When you're all done with everything, re-save the file with a new name, config.php. Save and close that file. I talked with the head of Google’s web spam team, Matt Cutts, a bit about the reasons behind the service. Now, onto the tools to actually manage the automatic shortening of the URLs you share. Finally, decide whether you want to let everybody and his brother create short URLs through your site, or whether you'll hand out passwords. Your solution would certainly work. In a file named .htaccess in the main Yourls folder (which might be hidden, so enable your "show hidden files" setting), remove the "#" from the beginning of the line, and add in your folder names after the RewriteBase /—in my case, that became RewriteBase /u/, because I installed Yourls at thepurdman.com/u/. Also known as a custom URL shorteners, custom link shortening services, link shorteners, private URL shorteners, private label URL shorteners and closed link shorteners, these services work similar to services such as TinyURL and Bitly and allow users to shorten very long links into shorter ones that are better suited for e-mailing, instant messaging and for services such as Twitter that restrict character counts. Today, every link in a tweet takes up a fixed number of characters regardless of length; using your own link shortener is now less important. Thanks for the feedback and happy PHPing!. This is a website all about vanity URL shorteners. There’s also a neat real-time interaction feature worth checking out. If you’re looking for help in finding the perfect domain name, look no further than here for some tips.
  • 6. So I never tried for DavidScott.com. Excellent post. I use David Meerman Scott (with my middle name) professionally for SEO and other identity purposes related to the URL aspect you mention. To a very limited extent it may obscure the destination of the URL, though easily discoverable; this may be advantageous, disadvantageous, or irrelevant. Failure to predict such problems with URL shorteners and investment in URL shortening companies may reflect a lack of due diligence. The main advantage of a short link is that it is, in fact, short, and can be easily communicated and entered without error. Your last setup step is to fire up your FTP client, command line, or web access tool and copy the contents of your Yourls folder to your server. There are many "David Scott"'s out there including one of us who walked on the moon, another who is a member of congress and still another who is an Irnonman champion. Some of them allow you to override this, so that your path can have a “custom” or “vanity” ending. Thanks for using me as an example. So when selecting a service, this is another factor to consider. In an effort to help us out, as our friend Nikola noted, “the good people of the Internet” created a tool called an URL shortener. If you give it a URL of 30 characters or longer, Twitter will shorten it using TinyURL. Until then, you can always use another service to manually shorten your URLs.
  • 7. Shortened internet links typically use foreign country domain names, and are therefore under the jurisdiction of that nation. But because we do not have a short URL, we would need to purchase a short URL. However, I do wish I had gotten DMScott.com because it is shorter and would be the same as my Twiter ID. I am the only "David Meerman Scott". That means you can have a custom name for your URL, such as these that lead to Search Engine Land: Victor - Wow. A short link which expires, or can be terminated, has some security advantages. Most of us do not have a very short URL for our blog because if we did, we could be using this trick instead. I hope that will happen in the future. URL or link shorteners take our long web addresses and give us a simple short URL that will fit into any tweet and won’t break comments or blog posts. Typically, URL shorteners make up a random path for your URLs — those /6Q8 or /qu03e3 and other boring sounding names you’ve seen. Those with dedicated domains can just drop those folders and files into the main access space, or the www section in some cases, while those doing a sub-folder installation should drop them in that folder. Twitter itself is used as a “client” by many people to publish their Tweets. Note that some (but not all) of my social vanity URLs are dmscott such as vimeo.comdmscott. Libya, for instance, exercised its control over the .ly domain in October 2010 to shut down vb.ly for violating Libyan pornography laws. Now if you think about it, these domains are very creative, so how can you find it quickly? Well you can use number of tools to find domains, but we recommend using Domai.nr to find these cool names. Put that into some URL shorteners, and they break — they’ll ignore everything from the ? symbol onward and just point people at the Google home page. Unfortunately, Twitter doesn’t allow for this default choice to be changed.
  • 8. One good way to do this is to use Domai.nr, which links directly to registrars for many domain extensions. I agree completely that breaking up the class into a set of more single-responsibility classes working together is the way to go for production. Thank you again for your feedback. Alex, Thank you very much for your feedback and point of view. Unlike most vanity URL shorteners, these services allow anyone to create short links to any URL on the Internet. I would really appreciate hearing more about your suggestion for replacing the static properties. Readers of your tweet will see a partial link, and if they hover over it, they’ll see the complete, original long link. I have looked into this further, and found that I had made a mistake in the database table’s schema. I felt it was an appropriate solution for values within the object that would not be changing through its lifespan, but I am here to learn as well, and am certainly open to correction :-) I will definitely be taking your advice to heart as I work on my next article. A message will appear just below your tweet, telling you that the link will be shortened automatically. If you can't find a link here, try the Wikipedia list of TLDs. To access T.co, you simply paste a long link right in the status update field of Twitter. Thank you very much to this poster for helping me to catch this bug!
  • 9. In Internet years, TinyURL.com could be considered the grandfather of all URL shorteners. For a URL shortener to be included on this website, it needs to be designated for use only by a specific webiste, organization or group of people. Clicking it will make a goo.gl URL and copy it to your clipboard. It’s worth bearing in mind though that domains for different countries cost different amounts, for example, if you wanted to register a domain in Puerto Rico (.pr) like wrap.pr for your business then it would cost you $1,400. Once you've found a domain you like, you'll need to register it. To make sure that the short_code field is treated as binary, and therefore case sensitive, the type needs to be VARBINARY. A URL shortener listed here may also be open for use by the public, but restricted only for use with a company's service, app or other special functionality. Simple extension to let you use Goo.gl, Google's URL shortener. We will get the code sample and GitHub repo updated as soon as possible. The character count you see in your status update includes the length of the shortened URL; exactly 20 characters, or 21 for for https links. It’s been around for years, and was one of the first link shorteners to be widely used on Twitter. But I was shocked when I tested it — so much so that I won’t even link to the service. It’s still a useful application today, and it boasts the following powerful features. lin.cr: Originally, I had lin.cr on my list, because it was included with TweetDeck. As anyone who is a regular reader of this site knows, your advice should carry a lot of weight, and it does with me. I REALLY appreciate it! Happy PHPing! That said, it’s important to note that this site is not about general, standalone URL shortening services such as TinyURL, bit.ly or snurl.com. If it's not available, you'll need to locate a registrar who handles the domain extension in question. Many extensions are available from companies you already use for domain registration — such as GoDaddy or Hover. After installation, right-click your Firefox toolbar, click "Customize", and drag the Goo.gl button to a toolbar.
  • 10. Once all of your virtual wires are connected, any URLs from your long domain will be custom-shortened, provided that you are logged into your Bit.ly account. New in version 1.4.1 Actually fixed the CloudApp option. It also means that if you use the Digg short URLs, none of the link credit passes to your page. You can now shorten the URL of an RSS feed (requires OS X Lion). That functionality, as seen with The New York Times, is only available at an enterprise-level Bit.ly partnership. That means the page is actually on Digg itself — they’re making a page with the DiggBar and pulling in your content without permission into a frame. Fixes some display problems on certain sites. It’s no longer necessary to enter your email address or password in the settings with CloudApp —you’ll be prompted for them if necessary. Bitly is now accessed securely. See full bio I agree that you should pick more popular services if it’s important that the links will work in a few months or years from now. Place your links on Facebook, Twitter, and more! You’ll still need that custom URL like tnw.to to shorten it to, but you won’t be burdened with the need to actually make sure the service is always up and running and take care of the hosting side of things. They come and go, but goo.gl, bit.ly and tinyurl are pretty safe I would say. Get paid to share your links on the Internet! Register for an account and start shrinking. Like lin.cr, it does a 200 code. Added a “None” option. New in version 1.2 More reliable on slower internet connections, or when the service takes longer to respond Now compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) New in version 1.1 Added support for Google’s URL shortener (goo.gl) Added support some custom services that return JSON data, like

New in version 1.3 The copied URL is no longer styled, so when you paste it will match the text around it. This set up will not customize links to your site that others are sharing. New in version 1.4 Fixed the CloudApp option. That said, you’ll need to make a few DNS changes to ensure the URL you’ve purchased works. The fun stops there. That’s not illegal, but it’s a tactic that died off years ago. It’s all kept with Digg. New in version 1.5 High resolution graphics for the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. • 12. A good Wireless-N access point can offer a range of up to 300 feet or even farther. For example, if you just changed your domain to DomainB.com, but you still have plenty of visitors coming to DomainA.com, you would use this to show them all of the existing content that is located on the new domain, without the need to update both websites. The URL is within the very fabric of our web, it cannot be killed off. Now, i want for my homepage (retailA.com) to look like retailB.com withouth having to change my url to retailB.com. If we get the design right, we can empower while clarifying; we can reduce complexity while enhancing functionality; we can expand freedom while not overwhelming with choice. You used TV or webTV as an example, but I think that is a case for the URL actually — Our TV sets today are limited to just a few channels, and for unique programming to exist it has to live within one of those channels, unfortunately — because it’s the only access point to the content. From a usability point of view, simplifying and even eradicating the URL is surely a good thing? For most people it’s unsightly, complicated, and just plain clumsy. This distance, however, changes based on the power of the devices involved, the environment, and, most importantly, the Wi-Fi standard. The channel has the control, as opposed to the author and the authors ability to be independent of the channel. My domain for example is retailA.com. The new page/domain has subsequent/inner pages. My question is, how will any of the solutions (especially solution 1 and 2) affect the inner pages of retailB.com? Thanks, Eileen As a user experience designer, it’s on my discipline and peers to provide the right kind of ideas and leadership. If you are using a CMS of some sort, they tend to have their own redirects and rewrites also involved. The emergence of the permalink really is what makes a URL most valuable. Typically, a Wi-Fi network is most viable within about 150 feet from the access point. Your misinterpretation of the web, and lack of knowledge and
  • 13. respect for its design is apparent in the terrible high-exposure headline, and there’s also a smell of rotten “apple” in the air. Wi-Fi range: This is the radius an access point's Wi-Fi signal can reach. For a single piece of content to exist online without mass-popularity and with complete independence. Hello Dapo, It is difficult to say right off hand. The Wi-Fi standard also determines how fast a wireless connection can be and is the reason Wi-Fi gets complicated and confusing, especially when the Wi-Fi frequency bands are mentioned, which I just did. Sure it’s powerful if you know what you’re doing, but I reckon it’s inevitable that we’ll soon move away from using URLs at all, just relying on links and searches instead. It sounds like you want what AOL had done back in the mid-nineties — where access to websites were nothing more than buttons on a home screen and keywords. I commissioned a provider to create me a new page and they assigned a different domain retailB.com. Kindest Regards, Scott M The first option will show all of the same content on one URL as you would another. The .htaccess file is read from the top down, so there could be other rules involved as well. Surely these are the things that good, thoughtful user experience design can achieve!
  • 14. Great article, but I’m not sure I agree with your conclusion.
