3. Project Overview
In this section you will outline the aim of the project/task and give an
overview of the activates you undertook to complete it.
4. What was the theme of your project and
what attracted you to it?
• The theme for this project was to create a tour guide aimed at a younger audience, I decided to create
something that would interest the younger generation. York is very much fitted for older people more than
younger therefore I decided to make my project active and wanted people to enjoy themselves while also
seeing tourist locations. The way that I achieved this was by allowing the participants to download the app
called York Race to track their progress whenever they find the location of the box.
• I wanted to make the app easily accessible for players to download hence why I created a QR code at the
end of my introduction video. I was planning to make an intro video since the start of this project because I
thought it would be a good way for me to show what I was wanting to achieve through video
5. What research did you undertake and how
did it help develop your project?
• I researched into my target audience to gain a better understanding on what their interests are, I decided
that researching my audience will improve my project because I will understand what my target audience's
needs are. By understanding that a lot of late teens will want to keep active I decided to make my project a
fun experience while also seeing key destinations in York. I used a few articles to help me with this research,
I found this helpful to a certain extent, what I mean by that is that a lot of the things that were mentioned in
theses articles were already points that I was aware of beforehand, so I didn’t find that over ally useful.
• One article that did help me was a guide to social media platforms and demographics, this helped me
understand the different types of people using certain social media apps. For example, their age, race, family
segmentation etc. Using this information, I tried to make my app available for all different types of users, this
was something that made the most sense to me because it would allow me to reach more people, the only
thing that I took into consideration regarding demographics was the age aspect of it, this was because of the
brief I was given, and I knew that I had to try and reach the younger audience.
• By looking at existing products it really helped me gain a better understanding on what different types of
apps use to create their software, and how their UI & UX compared to other popular apps. For example, I
researched into Instagram's layout as it thought it was quite simple and not over ally complicated to use, this
was probably my main inspiration when creating my app.
6. How did you develop and improve your ideas
throughout the project?
• There was a lot of trial and error during this project which helped me develop my ideas because I decided
that some things wouldn’t work and there would be limitations. For example, I thought of the idea that
players would have to use public transport in order to get to the locations, however after some audience
research in demographics I understood that making the players pay and use public transport will not be
efficient nor affective. Therefore, I decided to make all the locations closer to each other so that it would be
within walking distance.
• Regarding my app there was a few ideas that I gained from my existing product research that I implemented
into my app. I wanted to create a main page for app and wanted it to be clear and simple so that the app
would become easy to use and wouldn’t confuse the players.
7. What was the outcome of the project/task?
• At the end of production, I managed to make an intro video for when
the players first load the app. I edited this video through using
premiere pro, I was already experienced in using this program from
previous projects therefore I didn’t find it too challenging. However, I
wasn’t too happy with my footage as I feel like I could have maybe
filmed more therefore I would have had more footage to play around
with.
• I decided to make an app for the video to be displayed on. This app
wasn’t functional as I was having to use Apphive which was
something that I wasn’t too sure how to use, therefore I couldn’t
figure out how to make commands so that players can press on
certain areas on the app, and it would change screen.
8. Personal Response
This section will explore your thoughts and feelings about the
experience. This will help gain a understand of how your personal
feelings may have impacted the final outcome.
9. How did you feel about the project before
you started?
• I felt somewhat positive when going into the project however there was a few concerns. I didn’t
completely understand the task and was quite confused at first, but after it was explained to me, I
managed to gain a better understanding on the task at hand. Because I am part of the younger
generation, I thought that the brief was well suited to me, and I could relate to the younger
audience, and I can understand their wants and needs.
• When I was first reading the brief, I knew that I wanted to create some type of app that would be
easy to download and intriguing for the audience. I felt like I wasn’t too sure how to make a
functioning app as I have never made one before, however I managed to find a few websites and
YouTube videos to help me.
10. What do you think about your project development and
how did it help you to refine your idea?
• I feel as if my project development went well as the outcome wasn’t
what I expected it to be however it works for what I am trying to
achieve. Tweaking little things here and there helped me refine my
final idea as there was some obstacles during the production phase
that I had to tweak and overcome, this allowed me to make the best
possible final outcome.
11. Did you collaborate on your project or engage
contributors, etc?
• I collaborated with Flynn from my class, he helped me with the
recording part of my video as I was the main/only actor featured
• No one else was needed for what I was intending to film
12. How did you feel when the project was
completed and why?
• I feel like I could have made better use with my time and created
more external pieces i.e., more photoshop experiments. This would
have showed that I didn’t just complete the main task I also made
other side pieces that could have been used to elevate the main
project. Other than that, I was satisfied with how my final piece
turned out, I thought that my introduction video was a good way to
include film within production because that is something that I am
most comfortable doing.
13. Evaluating the project
In the previous sections, you have been commenting upon the project development. The
evaluation may include some similar information but it will also include critical comment.
An evaluation must include information about the good and bad points of the project and it
is important to be honest. Finally, you should make a judgment about the effectiveness of
the success of the project
14. What were the good points about the project/task and what did you
learn from them? [try and think of at least 3, more if possible]
• One good thing about my project is that I managed to make my introduction quite straight
forward and should be easy for the viewers to follow along with. This was my main intention from
the start of the project because I am aware that some things can be complicated and wanted to
try and keep the video simple. I learned that keeping to my plan was quite difficult as there was
certain aspects of my video that I wasn’t happy with, so I had to re-shoot some shots which
changed the outcome of my project for the better.
• Another good point about my project was the App, I liked the layout that I created through the
inspiration from other existing products, I felt as if it looked semi-professional and was suitable
for my target audience. Although my app wasn’t functional the base premise was still there, and I
was able to screen shot the different pages that I made and include this in my introduction video
• Finally, I liked the research part of this project because I really found it interesting seeing other
existing products and what inspiration I could gain from their apps. The audience research was
also an eye opener for me when going into this project as it allowed me to gain a better
understanding of my audience and what I would need to create to grab and retain their attention
15. What challenges did you face and how did you
respond to them? Try and think of at least 3...
• When reviewing my footage for my intro video I noticed that there was a
few shots that were not focused and wasn’t suitable for my video,
therefore I decided to go and re-shoot these shots which helped a lot.
• Another challenge that I faced was I didn’t have enough footage and could
have made my video longer and more informative, considering that
the video was supposed to be a video introduction on how to use the app I
feel as if it didn’t portray that very well and could have included more shots
of me using the app in different locations etc.
• Finally, I found it challenging when creating the app because it was
a website that I had never used before so I was confused as to make the
app work, I think even though the app wasn’t functional it was still clear to
see how it would work if it was ideally made properly
16. How would you rate the final piece? [think along the lines of
poor, satisfactory, good or excellent...justify your rating]
• I think that overall, my project was satisfactory, this is because of a
few points, one being the fact that the production quality was quite
lacs luster, and I wasn’t too happy with the amount of footage that I
had. I feel as if I could have included more experiments when making
the video and spoken about some footage that I didn’t use and why I
decided to not include it in the final piece.
17. How well did your project apply the characteristics
and conventions of the area you worked in?
18. How did you design appeal to your target
audience?
• I think with the design of my project it was well suited towards my
target audience as the overall aesthetic of my project was suited for
the younger audience. For example, I felt as if my idea would work for
a more active audience therefore the younger audience would be
interested by the idea because of the use of social media with my app
and keeping active while using the app.
19. Analysis
In this section, you will focus on the details of the project and make
sense of what happened in the project. You should demonstrate how
your decisions informed the project development and the success of the
outcome.
20. How did your skills develop during the portfolio? [remember,
skills aren't just technical, remember things like organisation,
time management, communication, etc as well]
• I think my time management was something that developed the most
as I realized after recording my footage that I didn’t have much time
left to re-shoot the other shots that I was needing, this was
something that I took on board and when making the app I ensured
that I had enough time just in case anything went wrong or if I felt like
I needed to change or add anything later to the app.
21. What feedback did you get from your peers
and viewings?
• Some found the video confusing and felt as if the idea wasn’t
portrayed very well and was unclear. They said I could of added
pictures of the app and text on the screen explaining what was
happening step by step.
• This was something I took into consideration and decided to add text
and images to the video.
22. What would you do differently in the future
and why?
• I think I would have looked at implementing more editing techniques
in my video which would have made the project seem more
professional. Another thing that I would do differently is I would use
Adobe to my advantage and use adobe express to display my work
and experiments. This would have shown my failures during the
project and would have allowed me to see the progress I made from
the beginning.
23. What knowledge have you gained that would help you in the
future to improve your project? Also, what knowledge from
academic literature and professionals has helped and why?
24. Action Plan
This section will identify what you would do differently in the future and
identify ways you could develop.
25. If you were making a similar project in the
future, what would you do differently?
• I would make my video clearer and straight to the point, I would also
take time to research further into YouTube video tutorials on how to
not only make my app fully functional but how to make it look and
feel more professional and not just slap dash
26. How could you develop your skills for future projects? Please
identify the appropriate resources and courses. For example,
webpages, tutorials, books, short courses and qualifications.
• For future projects I will look at more YouTube videos on tutorials for
photoshop/premiere pro. This will help me develop my skills even
further as it will allow me to gain more knowledge on these apps.
There are many YouTube videos that cover many different aspects of
the adobe apps which will then therefore make me more confident
going into other projects.
• Also looking into different courses that are related to creative media
will help me further extend my skills in the production element in
this course
27. What personal attributes could you develop to
ensure you are working at a professional level?
• I will need to work on my attention span as I feel like when I start
working at a professional level I will need to keep focused on the task
at hand and not steer away from that. I feel like a lot of the
responsibility for me getting distracted is my phone.
