PERSONAL NARRATIVE
History
The journey of my progression into an academic endeavor here at Texas Tech began long ago. One of
the major factors that came into play was in fact several experiences from my childhood. It begins with having
an abusive alcoholic father at the begging of my life. My first memories I have of him were abusing my mother
and myself. He was also very absent throughout much of upbringing which left my mother to struggle raising
me mostly on her own. There lead to several instances of emotional and financial hardships as we struggled.
There was two separate instances where we were in fact homeless and living out of a vehicle. But despite these
hardships my mother mad sure to brand me with an understanding that life only creates obstacles and not road

blocks. Her biggest concern was always for my well being and for achieving the most opportunities possible to
bring me out ahead in life. As we steadily came back to a stable life, I found myself working a job while going
to school to help support my mother at home. This responsibility was put on me from the moment I was legally
able to bring home a paycheck. This engraved me the emphasis of having an income to provide a means to live
off of. Now while I do credit this to creating a work ethic I would not have had otherwise, I believe this also
unfortunately created my academic imbalance. This resulted in prioritizing my job over my academic
responsibilities. This followed me even to my studies here at Tech. My natural instinct came to be that work
was always more important than school. So this resulted in my history of always having a full time job every
year I've been at Tech, and this always yielded a higher stress load that created a less than desirable grade point
average. Because of this imbalance I have always struggled academically in achieving higher grades. However
with my interests in certain disciplines becoming more and more apparent. I slowly began shifting my attention
from working full time, to understanding my responsibilities as full time student having more importance. I then
felt an empowerment over my own academic interests that gave me inspiration to succeed in my goals of
graduating. The experiences I have gained here are undoubtedly invaluable to me in my maturity as a student
and as a career minded adult.
Life’s Trajectory
As I progressively move forward in my academic endeavor, I find that my long term goals are becoming
less abstract. It has been since the inception of my coming to Texas Tech, that I have had mixed success in
deciding what I would like to do. The main item that I have found that is I would like to have a financial success
and abundance despite as well as prestige with my career choice. As time began to progress the reality of the
situation is that what I would like be doing for the rest of my life came into play of how I would enjoy the
quality of my life. So there came in point as to what I would do to enjoy this career field that would finance my
life. So there came into play my decision to pursue items that I found as enjoyable and looked for a means to
expand on them academically. So thusly I came to a point where I enjoy persuasive speaking and conveying
7. 7
information from one party to another. This yielding a study in Public Relations. I paired this with Leadership
and Development as I would like to embrace my own entrepreneurial spirit. This stems from my interest in
photography and graphic art, as I have already started up a small part time business doing these items. So
ideally I would like to have a larger cliental base that would support a livable income, more optimistically I
would like to be a freelance graphic artist for music artists and celebrities if possible. My designated sources
would be in how to market myself and possibly my work. I have already taken steps in better educating myself
in Public Relations. The only other outlet I would find value is expanding my knowledge in graphic arts. The
underlying dilemma is the overall risk that I am taking. Its in the understanding that I am using my academic
studies in these three disciplines to support my entrepreneurial endeavors rather than looking for a concrete
guaranteed career.
Connection
My immediate actions are thusly to access my options and collect as many tools as possible to assist in
my goals. The main objective to reach my desired outcome, must be taken in a series of steps. The main is to
take as many relevant classes to my areas of interest as possible. The goal here is make them as useful to me as
possible in order to aid my efforts. Now the conflict lies in that my career path is a very unique one. So I would
either need to find a internship in one portion of my desired career field, or look for an internship that has
multiple areas most similar to mine. I would look through the career center, the career fair or through any
resources that I may find beneficial to the cause. I would also do more work in this area to make myself as
experienced and as marketable as possible. The last and final item on my criteria, would be to graduate from
Tech itself. In the journey toward my ideal career, I would need the support of having my accomplished degree
in University Studies. I would then utilize an experiences gained to further aide in any efforts at
entrepreneurship
The bases for more my University Studies around my three general areas of focus. The main being in
Public Relations as it relies heavily on establishing and maintaining relationships. I have always had a strong
8. 8
suit for being an ambassador in lots of my social endeavors, as well as a sales background. I fell like PR would
enhance those skill sets that I already possess. Mass Communications is the second area of concentration. I felt
as if studying communication and how it varies in social settings, as well as in various groups would be crucial
in any business field. To understand how to convey information or transmit knowledge from one person to
another more effectively seems extremely crucial to many business and personal settings. The final area of
study is that of Leadership and Development. The skill sets in this area those that are most crude for me and
could use the most refinement. The raw un tailored efforts in managerial and leadership skills have always been
without form Having some basic knowledge and structured guidelines to follow makes this a valuable tool to
cultivate my own leadership skills. The combined education and work experiences I have gained, ideally are
contributing to my reservoir of knowledge. My passion is for creative art in photography and graphic design.
While my areas of study are focused on communicating and building relationships, I feel that a job in digital
creation could benefit in being able to convey its internal communication channels more efficiently with my
unique combination fields of study. A career in a graphic design studio or even media arts develop firm would
be greatly enhanced by strengthening its interior structure ,and reinforcing its communication channels. A
career that would allow me to express innovative ways to create a more efficient work environment that would
yield more satisfactory results is the ideal career path for me.
Continuity
The underlying theme that I have found in my life line leading up to academic ventures here at Texas
Tech is my tenacity. Along with my tenacity is my work ethic. I do not have a desired work balance as others
due, nor am I gifted with an abundance of intelligence or eloquence for an active academic presence. But it is
despite these hindrances I still grind my way through the obstacles and I still yield results and success to greater
extent. So I see myself as a weathered gear to a machine of progress. I grind my way through masses and
continue moving forward with sheer will and desire to achieve a greater life than what I was first given. The
9. 9
understanding that despite not having a guarantee in succeeding with my photography business, Im still arming
myself with a very valuable set of skill that gives me an advantage in the career world. This being paired with a
childhood that forged a work ethic that does not waiver or yield in the face of difficulty. I feel an empowerment
with my tools that I have created and gathered along my path. This will give me a better preparedness in any
workplace environment. But, more ideally not in the workplace that I get hired on, but in the workplace that I
create on my own.
