Overexposed by Maroon 5 Review
1. Overexposed by rock artist Maroon 5 (2012) their 4th studio album
Artist Background Information:
This album is self proclaimed by the band as “poppiest album, featuring mostly
pop oriented tracks, combined with pop rock, dance-pop disco and reggae sounds“.
The album cover artwork, which I really love was created LA artist Young & Sick,
is a colourful collage of illustrations seemingly inspired by the likes of
Picasso and a range of modern cartoonists. Its title is a smirking allusion to
Levine's ubiquity, while its sound is a reflection of how the group wishes to
retain the large audience they won once again with "Moves Like Jagger".
Levine: most dance-driven album ever, commenting: "It's very much an old-
fashioned disco tune." "I have a love/hate relationship with it “ but mostly I
love it." Ryan Tedder, one of the producers, commented: "I think the sound of
the songs [on 'Overexposed'] is very fresh; it's gonna win over a lot of kids
This album has had mixed by critics, song have called it the band “strongest
album“ while other call in too mainstream. I would somewhat have to agree with
that it just feels like the band is trying to be radio friendly since the song
“Moves Like Jagger“ was so successful.
I guess with a band like Maroon 5 in which they consistently what to change
their sound we have to adapt, however I feel like this album took the band away
from their rock, physical instrumental playing and replaced that with a lot of
electronic drum and guitar work, which sounds like it was controlled by a
computer.
Track by Track Review:
1. One More Night “ Like the beat of this song, very good vocals. Don“t
really like the maniacal drums, can hear the reggae inspiration, which I really
like, sometime different for sure. This song is about not getting along with
someone and hoping he only stays with her just "one more night"
2. Payphone “ This song would be good with Wiz Khalifa, its just to random in
the song, just keep like the song is trying to be radio friendly but getting
another popular name of the track. Great vocals by Adam, Meaning: The song is a
pop ballad and it talks about a romance that is over. It was also the bands lead
single off this album that spiked at #2 on the Billboard charts.
3. Day Light “ Like the vocals, especially the opening and chorus, very
reggae inspired.. Like this track because it sounds “real“, meaning there“s
really no electrics used. This song is a considered a rock ballad, about
realizing that one has to move on from an old relationship, but not fully
wanting to leave just yet.
4. Lucky Strike “This songs features a completely dubstep feel , which ive
said I hate however the vocals on this song really carry the track, although its
poppy I like the fresh sound, very catchy. Meaning: Sexual Intercourse and
getting “lucky“
5. The Man Who Lied “ Like the beat and vocals, interesting meaning.. To me
electric sounds overpower the song; making it feel busy to the point where Adam
has to shout to be heard. Meaning: about an honest man who is in a relationship
trouble
6. Love Somebody “ I like this tracks vocals but I hate this songs
production.. its like Coldplay on steroids, it is still overpowering, kind of
killing the vocals, much like the last track. Meaning: explores "salvation on
the dance floor"
7. Ladykiller - Like the groovy, funk feel.. very 70“s sounding.. Although I
don“t like the backing or chorus vocals“ “she“s such a Lady Killer“. Could be
about a guy who dumps his girlfriend because he finds on she sabotages other
women.
8. Fortune Teller “ Pretty monotone song overall“ Don“t like the dubstep
opening but I do like the piano, interesting production, pretty good vocals,
don“t like the hip hop, rap back beat.. Meaning: This is about person-1 being
madly in love with his now ex person-2 for a reason he/she can't comprehend so
person-1 constantly asks questions about the future and getting back together.
9. Sad “ Like the piano opening, a real song! Good calm vocals, classic
Maroon 5 I“d say.. Meaning: Depressing song“ about just feeling depressed about
various issues in Adams like, very “pure“.
10. Tickets “ Classic Maroon 5, actually like the dubsteb, “About the typical
LA moron“. Very catchy lyrics. Interestingly enough the phrase she“s got tickets
2. to her own show“, basically a self centered person
11. Doin Dirt “ Very Katy Perry esk, like the 70“d disco feel, good beat, good
vocals. To me a sexual meaning
12. Beautiful Goodbye “ Like the hip hop, calm feel of this song“ good song
very “pure“. Meaning: think this song was about a guy reminiscing the past, the
happy moments he had with the girl. He's losing her because he has repeatedly
done much pain to her, took her for granted and she just couldn't take it
anymore.
Overall after dissecting this album, I would review it is just being an average,
I wouldn“t call this album a complete flip because I do see some bright spots
from this album (especially from the singles Day Light, One More Night, Lucky
Strike)“ I like the fact that maroon 5 is trying to expand their sound to dance,
fun music, and I like the vocals. (It does have some catchy, good songs.) With
that being said this album fails musically because it feels too “poppy“, too
mainstream or radio friendly as I said before. I wish they would've stayed with
the roots of rock like they did on Hands All Over and Songs about Jane (make
rock music). As I said before I guess as a music culture we should adapt to this
more electronic sound but Im not feeling that on this record because of this
give this album a 5 out of 10 “ If you“re a diehard maroon 5 fan or a fan of
modern pop music you will enjoy this record
