2. Migration Patterns in Pakistan related to the geography are the
following Northern mountains, Western highlands, Indus plains,
Eastern deserts. And there are some reasons for international
immigration like Canal colonies, 1947 migration, Indo-pak wars,
Afghan conflict, Bangladeshi and Burmese migrants.
The first one is Development of punjab canal colonies and have some
reasons for the development
• Colonized 4.5 m hectares of land (desert & pastoral) for
agriculture purpose
• Imported peasants from eastern punjab
• Development of mandi towns for export of agricultural
products
And also have some Effects of development of Punjab colonies in
rural areas the Population increase of 18% and in urban areas the
Population increase 22%.
The second one is 1947 migration from India because of that the
population of Pakistan is increased 6% (1.8m) and there is no
migration to KPK and Baluchistan due to no communication link with
kpk and baluchistan. Migration is increased in Punjab - 90% to 192%
(1941-1951) , in Sindh - >150% (1941-1951) . Migrants had a cultural
and linguistic link with punjab
Impact of this migration is Caste and clan organization became weak
and ineffective and Go-getting culture replaced by old value system
and Mono-religious society emerged aiming to be mono-cultural
The third one migration is the Result of indo-pak wars. The first
Pakistan and India fought wars was in 1948 due to Kashmir conflict
and the next is In 1965 & 1971, and Thar’s population migrated to
india. Next is due to Kargill conflict held in 1977 – all producing
3. refugees and Kashmiris migrated to Karachi owing to geographical
limitations and 3500 muslim families moved to Thar and were alloted
12 acres of land, yet infrastructure and agricultural output collapsed.
The 4th one is due to result of Afghan Conflict and Population growth
rate in Peshawar > 2% (1961-1972)- 9% (1972-1981), in Quetta >
3%(1961-1972)-7%(1972-1981) and 600,000Afghans settled in
Karachi (NARA) and Koochis of Pawandas settled permanently in
Pakistan. The Pushto speakers in Pakistan was increased, the
Pukhtoon culture was Strengthened.
The 5th one is Bangladeshi and Burmese migrants in 1971 war and
non-bengalis shift to Orangi Karachi and riots between Burmese
muslims and Burmese government increased migration to Karachi
and Belonging to educated class, they have worked for improving
infrastructure and Engaged in the fishery industry
The Impacts of international migration are Illegal encroachments and
Acquired CNIC plus vote that disrupts electoral process. Bangladeshi
and Burmese women trafficked for prostitution to karachi
The Impacts of urban areas were Creation of informal settlements
and Public land unavailable, settlements being created by informal
subdivision of agricultural land, Along the transport corridors
creating problem for infrastructural development. Water and
sewerage discharged to water bodies and Aquifers being depleted
plus formation of soak-pits. The Transport has become a major issue
and Inner cities becoming male-dominated and hubs of corruption
The Impacts of rural areas were Migrant families have improved their
homes and created new ones and Lobbied for piped water and under
government support schools and new types of outlets and fast foods
were created. The Artisan products replaced by industrial goods and
the Problems regarding maintenance of agricultural infrastructure
and natural resources increased with a significant decline in
agricultural activities.
4. Health issues due to migration
Due to migration poverty caused and poverty is the main reason of
causing health issues, due to that many people suffered from
different diseases (communicable and non-communicable diseases).
Nowadays Pakistan have some chronic diseases like CPV and TB.
Pakistan is included in top 10 countries which have these two
diseases and due to poor sanitation and hygiene and the peoples are
suffering from different communicable diseases like diarrhea, TB,
cholera, and CPV. And also suffer from non-communicable diseases
like psychiatric problems, obesity, CVD and DM.
