3. • Group of 20 passionate undergraduate mechanical engineering students who design and manufacture a fuel efficient
prototype car and participate in the Shell Eco-marathon.
• International competition held and organized annually by the Shell group of companies.
• Aims towards challenging students to create the world’s most fuel efficient vehicles.
• Held around the world with events in Europe, America and Asia. We, Team Eta represent India at the SEM, Asia under the
gasoline prototype category.
About Team Eta
4. About Shell Eco-marathon
o Shell Eco-marathon is a world-wide energy efficiency competition sponsored by Shell. Participants
build automotive vehicles to achieve the highest possible fuel efficiency. It was originated by a
group of engineers in 1939.
o There are two vehicle classes
within the Shell Eco-marathon
• Prototype
• Urban Concept
o These classes are further
divided into 4 main categories
based on the type of fuel used.
• Gasoline
• Battery Electric
• Hydrogen fuel cell
• Ethanol
Prototype vehicle
Urban concept vehicle
o A prototype vehicle has to achieve maximum efficiency regardless of comfort of the driver and are
generally teardrop shaped.
o An urban concept vehicle’s design should be such that it should consider the comfort of the driver
and look similar to a commercial car while mimicking the actual driving conditions of the real world.
5. o At three events around the world hundreds of team compete to travel the furthest on the least
amount of energy. Some achieve distances equivalent to driving from Paris to Moscow (that's
2,485 km or 1,544 miles on a single liter of fuel!)
o During the competition, cars must attain an average speed of at least 17 mph (28 km/h) over a
distance of 10 miles (16 km).
o The course is typically a motor racing track or closed off the city streets. The fuel is strictly
measured out for each entrant at the start and end of the course. The difference is used to
calculate the vehicle's average fuel consumption.

17. With our previous year’s experience, this year we have carried
out major modifications in the car design and other systems
•We have very successfully
transformed our vehicle’s
body design from a metal
chassis to complete carbon
fiber monocoque structure.
• We are the first and only
team in India to completely
manufacture a monocoque
structure using vacuum/resin
infusion process by ourselves.
•The vehicle weight was
drastically reduced from
60 kg to 38 kg which is 30-
33 times lighter than an
average family car.
•We designed a new dog
clutch mechanism for efficient
transmission.
•Designed and manufactured
3D printed steering wheel,
PCB box, carbon fiber rims
and exhaust.
•Drag coefficient of the vehicle is
as low as 0.08 compared to
previous year’s prototype having
drag coefficient of 0.19 and the
design is inspired by a raindrop.

20. Future Implementations
• Aim : Building a prototype vehicle that can achieve an efficiency of 300 kmpl.
• The Competition : Design and fabricate a super efficient vehicle that is roadworthy
and follows Shell Eco-marathon rules.
• Our Approach : Build a vehicle that is more than capable of meeting Eco-marathon
rules, comfortable to drive and aesthetically pleasing in view.
• Our Vehicle : The car is expected to weigh 28 kg, around 35 times lighter than an
average family car in India.
• An ultra light Carbon Fiber monocoque structured body.
• Use of Vacuum Infusion process for manufacturing of high strength body in the
future.
• Implementing an on board GPS for communication with the driver for safety purpose.
• Fine tuning and modifying our engine for getting the most power from every drop
of fuel.
• The team plans to build an Urban Concept vehicle in the upcoming years.
