Please cite: Sankey, M. (2023) Rethinking (higher) education ideas to stimulate challenging conversations. Education for the digital world: Transformation accelerator - learning session 3. University of Adelaide. 17 March. A presentation to the University of Adelaide Leadership team. The University has embarked on a Transformation Accelerator journey to design a future-fit Education for a Digital World strategy. The accelerator process involves five intensive co-design sessions that bring together more than 30 design participants from across the University, including Academic and Professional staff and Students. Participants have been challenged to be bold to formulate a distinctive and future-fit learning experience for future University of Adelaide learners, staff and stakeholders. Three design sessions have now taken place, which have focussed on the future of education and the perspective of future learners. Inputs have included the CSIRO megatrends that might alter the landscape of higher education, drawing on a variety of experts and hearing from current and future students and prospective industry employers. Future learner profiles also provided an understanding of how our future learners will consume education. A series of guest speaker sessions have been arranged for participants and wider University colleagues, covering a diverse range of relevant topics.

OPPORTUNITIES IN HUMAN CAPITAL INVESTMENT FOR INCLUSIVE GROWTH Educators must be transformed from those who impart knowledge to those who facilitate learning. Curricula must be transformed from mechanisms to deliver facts into mechanisms to promote and facilitate learning and thinking. Experts assert that a Competency-based Approach to curriculum development can facilitate this transformation. Education and training integrated (a sound general education and broad-based initial training are essential bases for lifelong continuing learning). TVET Role to meet the need of emerging industry:  Demand-driven approach  Learning for employability  Concept of continuing life-long learning  Self-learning and focus on the learner  A search for multi-skilling  Recognition based on competency and prior learning  Recognition of the need to focus both on formal and informal sectors  Training for wage and self-employment  Decentralized system requiring both strong national and decentralized institutions  Policy and delivery separate, market-driven  Participatory governance, recognition of multiple actors, social dialogue 21st Century Filipino Skilled Workforce Characteristic:  Technically competent  Innovative and creative  Knowledge-based, with higher order thinking skills  With foundational life skills  In pursuit of lifelong learning opportunities  Possessing desirable work attitudes and behavior TVET Trends & Specific Skills Interventions : KNOWLEDGE-BASED ECONOMY - Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are introduced to advocate critical thinking, analysis and problem solving to augment and enhance learning outcomes in TVET. They have also become common feature of standard-based education reforms. RAPID TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE - Possession of Generic Soft Skills has become a pre-requisite in the new work place. Skills including cognitive, interpersonal, attitudes, values work habits and enterprise, innovation and creativity are very much embedded in capacity building in TVET. GLOBAL WARMING - Sustainable Development as key agenda of UNs and other development organizations education provisions, significantly calls upon reorienting TVET curriculum towards sustainability while maintaining the principles of 6Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Renew, Recycle, Repair and Rethink perspective. POVERTY ALLEVIATION - Entrepreneurship, Modular Employable Skills and Informal Sector skills are largely considered to advance poverty reduction mechanisms and create gainful opportunities particularly in unorganized sectors.

This presentation is about trends in ODL in an African perspective. Education and learning is probably that single thing that has the greatest impact on humans and societies, in particular in a long term perspective. Higher education is increasing more rapid than ever, and Africa is a hot spot for future HE. Africa is lagging compared with richer parts of the world, but is catching up faster than many would have believed. However, better integration between education and economic value chains has to be more in focus. For the post 2015 education agenda Quality Open Education Resources and ODL can make dreams come through. In fact, without OER and ODL, dreams about quality education for all might end up as wishful thinking. Not all that shines is gold, and the MOOC hype has been replaced by a good portion scepticism in particular regarding target groups, lack of student success and learning outcomes. However, the driving forces for open knowledge are so strong that we again and again will se waves of innovations riding on online learning and mobile broadband, where Africa will through time will catch up and close the digital gap. Teachers and teachers trainers is the key to educational success for Africa, and competencies and capability to provide quality ODL will be in the core. "If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”, an old African proverb says. And ICDE is prepared to go far together with ACDE.
