3. Modern Art (1870-1970)
• Modern art are artworks made around the 1870;s to 1970’s.
• The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the
past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation.
The emergence of modernism is traced to many factors.

4. Modernism
• Characterized by a movement away from the traditional and classical
modes in painting that made many artists feel outdated.
• Shows more experimentation and new perspectives and ideas on how
art is supposed to be and how it functioned.
• New types of art were developed such as:
- Kinetic art - art that depends on motion for its effects.
5. Assemblage – is art that is made by assembling disparate elements –
often everyday objects – scavenged by the artist or
bought specially. (wood, tin, plastic, cardboard, etc.)
Performance Art – art that has to acted out live in front of an audience.
6. New techniques were also developed:
• Chromolithography - a method for making multi-color prints using
stones or metal plates
• Pointillism - a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of
color are applied in patterns to form an image.
