2. DEFINITION
• Action Research is a systematic form of
inquiry that is collective, collaborative,
self-reflective, critical, and undertaken by
the participants of the inquiry/research.

3. ORIGIN
• IN LATE 1940S
Kurt Lewin is generally considered the „father‟ of action
research. A German social and experimental psychologist, and
one of the founders of the Gestalt school, he was concerned with
social problems, and focused on participative group processes for
addressing conflict, crises, and change, generally within
organizations. Initially, he was associated with the Center for
Group Dynamics at MIT in Boston, but soon went on to establish
his own National Training Laboratories.

“Lewin is credited with coining the term „action research‟
to describe work that did not separate the investigation
from the action needed to solve the problem”
His process was cyclical, involving a “non-linear
pattern of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting on
the changes in the social situations”
