NGEMC hada recentreportof a telephone scaminwhichthe callerclaimedtobe an NGEMC employee andtoldthe
NGEMC memberthey neededtocome tothe home and change the meter.
The callertoldthe residenta16-percentincrease wouldbe addedtothe bill fordoingthis.The NGEMC memberthen
hearda promptto press1 if thiswasan error message.
Scammerssteal inmanyways.Theymay try to enteryourhome by false pretensesorclaimyourbill isbehindand
threatenservice disconnectionunlessyouimmediatelypaybycreditcard or othermeans.If scammersleave anumber
to call back, do notcall.A thief takingyourcall may evenansweritasNGEMC or GeorgiaPower.Thieveshave even
recordedutilitycompanyon-holdmessagesandadvertisementsandreplayedthemontheirphone systemssothey
soundlike alegitimate utility.Inaddition,utilityimpostorshave placedutilitynamesandfake logosonvehiclesand
gone door to doorstealingpeople’smoney,sayingtheyneedtocollectutilitybills.
NGEMC representativesdonotcall customerstorequestcreditcard informationandrepresentativesdonotvisit
customers’homestocollectpayments.Creditcardtransactionsbyphone can onlybe initiatedbythe membercalling
NGEMC’s publishedphone numbers.NGEMCemployeesattimesmayrequire accesstoa customer’soutside property
for the purpose of powerrestorationandequipmentmaintenance.However,unlessamemberhasrequestedapre-
scheduled,on-siteenergyinspection,NGEMCemployeesorcontractorsdo notenterhomes.NGEMC employeesand
contractors carry identificationbadgesandwearuniforms.If youhave anydoubtthat someone is anactual utility
employee,call the NGEMCoffice numberslistedbelow toconfirm.If youfeel yoursafetyisinjeopardy,call 911
immediately.
To stay safe fromscam artists,impostors,andthieves:
 Neveropenyourhome tostrangerswhoare acting as utilityworkers.
 Neverprovide financial orpersonal informationtocallers,people whovisityourhome orcontact youby any
