Miramonte High School - 2010 Jefferson Awards Students In Action Presentation

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Miramonte was introduced to the Jefferson Awards Program at the end of January. Since the introduction, the ASB has been determining how we currently recognize students, how we encourage community service and how we publicize student accomplishments. We have also been assessing how our current accomplishments fit with the seven Jefferson Award Program goals. To date, we have recognized students through teacher nominations for the Miramonte Student of Excellence at the spring assembly. This award is divided into four awards designed to recognize students that are leaders for their peers and not just the best at what they do. The awards include athletic leadership, academic leadership, community service and artistic talent. The ASB has been doing this recognition for two years. It is difficult to sustain because of the existing nomination and selection method used. Miramonte Parents Club and the Counseling Office have a Senior Awards night to recognize seniors by their teachers and coaches for outstanding work in that subject or sport. This ceremony is also used to award scholarships or other special community awards. The College and Career Center has an annual ceremony to honor student progress toward 100 hours of community service per year. The winners are not publicized and it only captures students that self report their hours. Miramonte does not currently have a method to assess the amount of volunteerism. Without this method it is impossible to determine our current status or when we would double our current amount. We determined what would be the most important goals to accomplish by the end of this school year and selected the ones we could successfully accomplish. These goals are: Establish baseline criteria for nominations Create a method for nominating students by peers, teachers and parents Create a method for determining award recipients through verification and interviews Create publicity campaign to raise awareness of the intrinsic and extrinsic benefits of doing community service Create a publicity campaign to raise awareness of the Jefferson Award Program and the benefits to the recipients Establish a regular method of recognizing students at various public venues including, school board meetings, town council meetings, coordinating council meetings, rallies/assemblies Document all processes in order to sustain the program Establish a new position in ASB dedicated to student recognition and publicity
  2. Baseline criteria creates a starting point to look for qualified recipients. In order to create a set of baseline criteria we need to determine the average number of hours all students on campus volunteer. A process for nominating students includes creating an initial form with basic information and space for a short description of why a student is being nominated. The form will be accessible from the ASB Blackboard site, various parent portals (Parents Club Website, Education Foundation for Orinda Website and Matador News e-newsletter) and the Staff Landing Page on Blackboard. Hardcopy forms will also be available in the College and Career Center, Administration Office and Counseling Office. Designated ASB officers will collect the nomination forms once a month and determine which students meet the baseline criteria. Next they will conduct personal interviews with a given set of questions. After selecting the recipients, the ASB officers will determine the venue to honor the students with their award.
  3. This campaign will encourage students to volunteer their time in order to receive personal satisfaction. It will also highlight the real and perceived benefits to the given community. The publicity campaign will use a variety of methods to target all parts of the community including ads in the Mirador (the student newspaper), Blackboard email, the Matador News (the parent e-newsletter), presentations at various meetings such as staff meetings, coordinating counsel, parents club, school board and city council meetings. Publicity will not include banners or fliers on campus unless there is a specific need for an audience or nominations. The idea is to keep this as a more upscale event and reduce overall student labor of continually putting up fliers or banners. This campaign will inform students of what the Jefferson Awards Program represents. It will also publicize the benefit to receiving the award.
  4. All processes will be documented electronically and stored on the ASB class blackboard for access by future officers. The documents will be maintained by a designated officer in the class. Documents include nomination forms, schedules, lists of recipients or potential recipients, the award template, interview questions and baseline criteria. The Activity Director will establish a new ASB officer position responsible for overseeing the program to help ensure it’s success. A job description will be published in the election packet and the position will be by interview only.
  5. Long term goals provide the ASB officers with direction for the next year. These goals set initial values that can be achieved then re-evaluated and changed in the future. The goals can be achieved by: Promoting the existing means of finding volunteer opportunities Provide a method to track community service hours on a school-wide basis Assess progress and determine timelines to doubling the volunteer capacity Set annual goals to raise money for awards or scholarships Establish a method of distributing the money Encourage students to seek out donations Provide information to other schools about the Jefferson Awards Program
  6. We will promote and expand what already exists at Miramonte including service clubs and Miramonte Reach! Tracking hours is difficult since there is no requirement that students do an community service. We can start by using the College and Career Center’s hours tracking method until another means is established. Reviewing our school progress will determine if we need to find ways to encourage more community service or if the momentum created can carry itself.
  7. Fundraising to create a pool of funds used to encourage students to participate in an activity more has never been a consideration at Miramonte. An entire process of fundraising, goals and distribution will need to be established. This goal will: Raise money so that the volunteer organizations can grow and be more effective Expand the number of volunteers/organizations
  8. Once the momentum starts to carry the Jefferson Award Program it will become easy to demonstrate the excitement created by the school which in turn will help to sell the concept to other schools.
  9. We have a program called the Miramonte REACH. It branches out to many other different community service organizations such as: Contra Costs Foodbanks, Save the Bay, Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Hospital, St. Jude’s Research Foundation, St. Anthony’s Soup Kitchen. At Miramonte, we are fortunate enough to have a College Career Center which provide crucial information on community service opportunities. Community Service clubs include: the Environmental Club, Interact Club and Key Club. By getting more students involved int these clubs, we hope to accelerate our goals. The Associate Student Body which includes all four classes on campus provides opportunities to do community approximately ten times a year and includes Toys for Tots drive, Make-a-Wish coin drive, Blue Star Moms care package drive, Brighter Beginnings Adopt-a-Family, Blood Drive, Health Fair (Healthy Choices Club and Sports Med) and many others.
  10. Organizations REACH Works With: Bay Area Crisis Nursery (BACN) provides a safe living environment for babies and young children whose families are experiencing temporary problems. Reach assistance has included wrapping gifts, preparing Easter baskets, and gathering needed food and supplies for BACN. Brightest Little Star: The Brightest Little Star project was designed to help families with severely ill newborn babies. Reach volunteers have prepared memory quilts to be given to parents. Reach has also made fleece blankets for children at area hospitals in long-term care with serious, life-threatening illnesses. Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano Counties: This Food Bank provides canned food to the many families, seniors, and others needing food in these counties.  There are a variety of volunteer opportunities including collecting, sorting and distributing food.   Glide Memorial Church: Volunteers at Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco help prepare and serve lunch to poor and/or homeless people. The kitchen at Glide serves 500+ meals every day. Prearranged volunteer Community Service help from Miramonte students is always appreciated. Habitat for Humanity (HFH): Habitat builds homes for families with low income. Volunteers on building events must be at least 18, but Reach has been involved through supporting fundraising events including preparing Gingerbread houses. Local Libraries: Orinda, Moraga and Lafayette libraries all use volunteers to help with the summer reading program, shelving books/videos/etc., and even cleaning children's picture books. Reach has also helped with special reading and activity times for younger children. St. Vincent de Paul Society: SVdP volunteers help to serve lunch or prepare food boxes for local poor and/or homeless people. Reach volunteers work at St. Vincent de Paul on the second Saturday of every month during the school year. Save the Bay: Reach volunteers restore different parts of the Bay shoreline by helping with shoreline clean-up and planting native species seedlings. Shelter Inc: Helps low income and homeless from Contra Costa county become self-sufficient and obtain permanent housing.  Volunteers can act as mentors to children, organize parties, and help with fun fieldtrips for families.  Stand Against Domestic Violence: Stand works to prevent domestic violence and support those who have experienced domestic violence. Reach has worked with Stand to promote awareness of their program, and been involved in helping staff fundraising activities including their annual Academy Awards night.
  11. Toys for Tots collected over 2,000 toys in 2008 and over 1,000 toys in 2009. Blue Star Moms collected over 14 trash bags of care package items for troops. NorCal Triathlon raised money for a local scholarship fund. Brighter Beginnings had 14 families wishes more than fulfilled this year. Over 250 pounds of food was collected for the Thanksgiving boxes. So far, Hoops for Haiti has collected $300 and the Bargain Mart/Bake sale has collected nearly $500. All of these events were student driven and designed to get students that don’t normally participate an opportunity to do some community service.
  12. Hoops for Haiti – 3 games, boys & girls varsity, sponsor a player for each point they score. Money to go to Doctors without Boarders – have until Feb 15 to pay. Bargain Mart – type of yard sale with donated items sold, proceeds to benefit the Red Cross (approx $350). Also – bake sale with $150
  13. One of our key ground rules is that “you cannot say no to an idea unless you have an alternate idea that is worth consideration.” The leadership team is responsible for student recognition, the Jefferson Awards and the promotion of community service consists of both elected and appointed positions including: ASB Officers – These are the elected officers that oversee events for the entire student body. Commissions – These are appointed officers that oversee events for the entire student body. They are appointed by the ASB Officers. Class Officers – These are elected officers that oversee events for their class: Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior. Events include fundraising, participation in community service. We have students from all different age groups which broadens our perspective. It makes our brainstorming and creative abilities more diverse. Since our Leadership Team consists of students that are selected as well as elected, it provides opportunities to invite people that would not normally participate in a student government class thus leading to activities that appeal to all demographics of our school such as: athletes/jocks, gamers and, academically advanced. House of reps is for students in 4 th period classes to represent the student body in discussion of campus issues.
  14. We have a school newspaper called the Mirador. Parents as well as students can stay informed about upcoming community service opportunities. In addition it is an outlet where we can publicize students achievements. We would like to be able to find students who have gone above and beyond the status quo and tell their stories via this electronic asset. The school uses the Blackboard system to post announcements and email students. Blackboard also houses the on-line version of our announcements. Matador News and Constant Contact are both electronic means to communicate with parents. A designated ASB member attends school board and city council meetings in order to communicate school activities, as well as receive community input and events. (ASB member attends city council and district diversity meetings which allows us to reach out to our local community and acknowledge students beyond our campus. Goals: Tell compelling stories Public recognition for volunteers
