The Ministry of Information communication and technology (MoICT) will enhance staff
capacity and infrastructure at the department of Information which will see Kenya News
Agency (KNA) turn to a profit making agency.
This was said at a retreat /conference organized by the department of information
which was graced by Mr. Joe Mucheru , ICT cabinet Secretary and Sammy Itemere
,Permanent Secretary ,Broadcast and Telecommunication.
Mr. Mucheru said MoICT is working to revamp infrastructure across all county
information offices and stations.
He added that plans were at an advanced stage to connect county information offices
with internet through the county connectivity programme being implemented by the
ICT Authority. ICTAuthority is also spearheading digitization of all KNA content.
Mr. Mucheru acknowledged that transport is a major challenge especially in rural areas,
and said the issue will be addressed to enable county information officers in far flung
areas deliver news in a timely and accurate manner.
Mr. Samuel Itemere while addressing the officers reiterated the ministrys commitment
to create a condusive working environment for its information officers in terms of
recruiting more staff and promotions.
In a rejoinder Mr. Mucheru said the department of Information through the Kenya News
Agency should align itself with the devolved structures and ensure information whether
print, broadcast or electronic caters everyone in the country given the fragmentation of
audiences.
Acting Director of Information, GaroGwaro, thanked Mr. JoeMucheru and Sammy
Itemere for gracing the conference, which saw extensive and exhaustive consultations
on how to chart the way forward in the information age and propelling Kenya towards a
digital economy.
