INNOVATIVE RESEARCH
THE UOIT COMMUNITY
With a graduate student population of just under 700 students, you
will enjoy small classes and an intimate learning atmosphere. You will
have the opportunity to network and build lasting relationships with
professors, staff, and fellow classmates.
The Faculty of Business and Information Technology is home to profes-
sors who are experts in their fields and who perform specialized and
interdisciplinary research. Our research supports the university's vi-
sion to be committed and engaged in research and scholarly activities
of national and international relevance, with the great potential to
have an impact on society by addressing socio-economic issues of re-
gional, national and global significance.
Just as the sum is often greater than the parts, interdisciplinary re-
search produces great innovation. Our professors progress with a di-
verse mix of students enrolled in master's and PhD degrees in Comput-
er Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Health Sciences
(Health Informatics), Information Technology and of course, Business.
We aim to provide our students with a connection to some of the most
remarkable innovation in Canada and the world.

AND
MASTER OF INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY SECURITY (MITS)
MASTER OF SCIENCE (MSc) AND DOCTORATE IN
PHILOSOPHY (PhD) IN COMPUTER SCIENCE
The MSc and PhD in Computer Science are research programs offered in
collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of
Science. The programs cover concepts from engineering, science and
business with the aim of producing high-quality software and information
systems professionals. The aim of the MSc and PhD programs is to
produce a new breed of computer science graduates that have a broad
background in information technology along with project management
and people management skills. Graduates of these programs will not only
have strong technical expertise in their particular field, they will also have
the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and to tackle
problems that require both technical and non-technical solutions.
UOIT’S COMPETITIVE EDGE
The MSc and PhD programs differ from most existing computer science
programs because they concentrate on both applied research and the
development of professional skills. The expectation is that graduates from
this program will build careers in industrial research and software
development. The program focuses on the skills required for successful
careers in industry, reflecting UOIT’s goals to be market-oriented and to
provide high-quality professional education.
The MSc and PhD programs provide students with the opportunity to
explore innovative fields of research while working in world-class research
groups.
Four fields are offered within the MSc and PhD programs in Computer
Science:
• Digital Media;
• Information Science;
• Networks and IT Security; and
• Software Design.
Launched in 2005, UOIT’s Master of Information Technology Security
(MITS) degree program is one of the first of its kind in Canada and one
of only a few specialized IT Security graduate degrees available in the
world. Through theory and applied learning, the MITS program enables
students to develop an extensive understanding of business and
information technology security in a team-learning environment.
The curriculum contains most of the domains found in the Certified
Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam as well as most
of the domains found in the SysAdmin, Audit, Networking and Security
(SANS) Essentials course.
YOUR COMPETITIVE EDGE:HANDS-ON LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Students in the MITS program complete laboratory assignments which
simulate a variety of attack-and-defence scenarios. One student team
may attempt to secure an information system using available hardware
and software tools while another student team endeavours to
compromise the system as it was designed. Alternatively, a team may be
assigned to undertake a forensic analysis of a compromised system.
This simulated network environment provides graduate students the
opportunity to experience different perspectives of IT security,
strengthen their skills and deepen their knowledge.
INDUSTRY DEMAND
The MITS program prepares students to work in a variety of sectors and
high-tech positions within:
• Financial institutions;
• Health-care agencies;
• Small and large corporations;
• All levels of government.

The Faculty of Business and Information Technology at UOIT houses an array of
impressive research and computing facilities equipped with the most advanced and
latest technology. Students gain their competitive edge through work conducted in
facilities such as our:
LABORATORY FOR ADVANCED USER INTERFACES AND VIRTUAL REALITY
The Laboratory for Advanced User Interfaces and Virtual Reality provides a range of
specialized equipment for 3D graphics, user interface and haptics research.
HACKER RESEARCH LAB
The Hacker Research Lab is a dedicated space equipped with state-of-the-art
network devices such as servers, clients, firewalls, and routers.
GAMES AND MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT RESEARCH LAB
The Games and Media Entertainment Research Laboratory (GAMERLab) is a joint
game research lab. These researchers are working on projects ranging from
stereoscopic 3D games and robotics via physical health and biofeedback games to
serious games for health care environments.
SOFTWARE QUALITY RESEARCH LAB
The SQR Lab focuses on software quality of concurrent and distributed systems.
Current active projects include: automatic repair of concurrency bugs, prediction of
mutation scores, testing of concurrent software using clone detection, visualization
of thread interleavings.
VISUALIZATION FOR INFORMATION ANALYSIS LAB
The lab’s research focuses on information visualization, with special attention on
text and document analysis. Other research themes include human-computer
interaction more generally, interactive surface and tabletop display interaction and
applications research, and computer supported learning.
HEALTH INFORMATICS LAB
This lab supports fundamental and applied research within the health informatics
domain, with a focus on its ability to simulate current and proposed next-generation
functions within intensive care units (ICUs) and specifically neonatal ICUs (NICUs).
ADVANCED NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY AND SECURITY RESEARCH LAB
The Advanced Networking Technology and Security (ANTS) research lab at UOIT is
the house for the state of the art research and development on technologies for next
generation communication and critical infrastructures.
XOR LAB
The laboratory has the capacity to accommodate 13 students and includes
computer servers, desktop and laptop computers, as well as audiovisual equipment
for presentations and videoconferencing
INFORMATION FORENSICS AND SECURITY LABORATORY
UOIT’s Information Forensics and Security Laboratory (ISFLab) performs research
and development on securing and analyzing computer systems and data. The lab
includes space and facilities for students to comfortably perform their research,
discuss, collaborate, and visualize data.
