Notes de l'éditeur
The magazine is to inform people about artists in the r&b/ soul and rap industry. There are many music magazines but only a few covers a specific genre, R&B. This is the gap in the market, and I intend on creating a magazine that fills in this hole by using USP to attract those interested in this genre of music.
The purpose of the magazine is to promote and publicise artists currently dominating the r&b/ soul and rap sector in music as well as supporting underground artists in the same field. It’s to Inform those interested in this genre of music about their favourite artists and other elements that may appeal to this audience. Additionally, the magazine should reflect the genre of r&b by using elements associated with the genre e.g., clothing style, lifestyle, profession etc. For example, the magazine could include a list of upcoming performances with information about the ticket price, location, time, date etc. As well as the times when albums will be published and information on meet-and-greets with the artists.
Offering a subscription that exposes exclusive information will attract more people into buying the magazine. only a few magazines covers the r&b in the location my magazine is based in. This is the gap in the market, and I intend on creating a magazine that fills in this hole by using USP to attract those interested in this genre of music.
This genre of music has specific elements that help differentiate itself from other genres and music styles those of which includes the outfits worn by the artists in the industry as well as the artist’s lifestyle. The genre type of my magazine is r&b/soul and rap. I have chosen this genre as it is the most commercially successful genres in the modern music industry. The size and length of the magazine will follow the typical layout of a common magazine which takes the form of an A4 sized magazine (210x297mm) with the following dimensions: 5.5 by 8.5 inches. Additionally, distributing the magazine every week is too expensive so producing them every month or so (2-3 months) would be a more cost-effective option.
My magazine will have a concise layout consisting of a masthead, image of a model (preferably a well-known artist) and subheadings to prevent the magazine being too hard to read due to multiple elements of text etc. The magazine’s layout replicates the way in which billboards and ELLE have designed their magazines.
By taking font psychology into consideration, I've been able to identify the right fonts to help evoke feelings and emotions in my cover design. People have different thoughts, feelings, and associations with different font types therefore, the right font that connotates the message behind the magazine is crucial as it is how the magazine is perceived and received by the target audience. Sans serif fonts are great for brands who want their designs to be viewed as bold and modern. Using a sans serif font can help elevate my magazine to seem more appealing to my target audience.
I will follow a set of 3 colours that complement the style and format of the fonts I've chosen. Choosing no more than 3 colours prevents the magazine from looking distracting. The colours I've chosen will consistently be used throughout the magazine to follow a more professional look.
Rhythm and blues, often referred to as r&b, was marketed as ‘African American music’ in the 1940s as it was developed by Black Americans. R&b is heavily influenced by jazz, traditional blues and other forms of music styles. R&b is one of the most commercially successful genres in the modern music industry.
Hip hop is the youngest audience demographic in the world today
Hip Hop/R&B comprises a massive 70% of the Top 100 among Black consumers. Hip-hop/ r&b is more prominent among 12-34 men.
Costs: the costs for the magazine varies. I must consider paying those working towards the making of the magazine like the photographer, graphic designers, writers, editors etc. I will also need to pay for equipment and advertising and marketing costs to distribute the magazine. Im looking towards investing round £1k+ on equipment alone.
