The Volta Regional Secretariate of the United Cadres Front (UCF) has re-emphasized the spirit and importance of the June 4, 1979 military revolution, ahead of the commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the historic event on Sunday, June. 4, 2023.

RE-EMPHASIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF JUNE 4TH UPRISING COMMEMORATION;
DISPELLING THE MISCONCEPTIONS
On this special occasion of the June 4th uprising commemoration, the United Cadres
Front (UCF) Volta, wishes to reiterate the importance of this day in our current
democratic dispensation. The struggle for a better Ghana started and dates way back
before independence in 1957. Many heroes and brave men willingly gave up their
personal freedom, families and even their lives to win that struggle. The bloods of the
brave-hearted forebearers were shed as if they are of no significance, yet the many that
came after them remained not deterred. Their intrinsic firm resolve to see Ghana work
was their inspiration to endure all manner of persecution without retreat. Several
attempts were made at achieving those dreams and though some failed in their quest,
others pursued it to a successful end.
The June 4th uprising was one of such famous moments of successful attempts to
secure a better future for Ghana and generations yet to be born. Prior to this event,
Ghana under the military administration of W. K. Akuffo was plagued with scandals,
systemic corruption, financial and social indiscipline, bad governance, and growing
insecurity. A situation where there was no equity in the distribution of the resources of
the sovereign people of Ghana. Things were falling apart and needed an immediate
remedy. On June 4th 1979, the brave-hearted Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings of blessed
memory(may his gentle soul soldier on), for God and country led an uprising to secure
the country for all manner of persons from the hands of the nation wreckers who failed
to uphold the toils and bloods of their ancestors. He damned all consequences and the
highly dangerous nature of this mission of salvaging Ghana.
The Armed Forces Revolution Council (AFRC) under the leadership of Chairman
Rawlings administered the country for only 3 months and handed over in September to
Dr. Hila Liman of the People's National Party (PNP). Unfortunately, the PNP
administration failed to adhere to the core principles of probity and accountability
hence the 31st December uprising.
Some excesses due to the acts of some ill-informed and uncommitted disgruntled
soldiers were recorded though under the AFRC administration. However, the uprising in
its totality gave a new hope and life where law and order was restored and the Kwame

2. Nkrumah dream of patriotism and equity came back to life once again. The birth of
Cadre organs like the June 4th Movement, Committee for the Defense of the
Revolution (CDR), Green Book Club, Civil Defence Organisation (CDO), Workers Defence
Committee (WDC) and also the 31st December Women Movement, Democratic Youth
League of Ghana (DYLG)/Edikanfo Movement and others which played a pivotal role in
instilling a sense of undiluted patriotism and discipline across all age groups gave
hope to the future of Ghana.
Chairman Rawlings survived several attempts on his life and family and peacefully
transitioned into a democratic governance that gave birth to the fourth republic in 1992
and still thrives till today.
Fast forward this day, what do we see? Ghana is heading back to the ditch as in the
dark days. Corruption has engulfed every institution and even to the presidency of our
dear nation as evident in the numerous daily scandals that continue to plague us.
There is a sharp decline in regards to the rule of law. Independent institutions are now
being interfered with and controlled by elements in government. There is no more
social justice and equity as the poor are made poorer and a few closer to power are
made richer by deliberate bad governance policies. Discipline has fallen to its lowest
across all age groups and patriotism has been thrown to the dogs. Partisan politics
have overshadowed our sense of patriotism and is now the fastest way of amassing
wealth instead of serving the people. Was this what our forefathers fought selflessly
for? Was this what they willingly gave their lives?
It is said that, one cannot get to his desired destination without taking a
retrospective account of the journey and progress made at each point in time. We as
members of the United Cadres Front(UCF), wish to set the record straight that many of
these corrupt politicians were nowhere to be found when the drum of bravery was
beaten. We saw it all and have seen the sharp decline in the progress of our dear Ghana.
For this reason, we wish to remind ourselves of the struggles to make Ghana a better
one and the need for all to uphold discipline and patriotism over selfishness and
eschew corruption through this year's June 4th commemoration. On this day, we also
intend to honour the toils and the blood of our forebearers who fought with their lives
to bring us this far for their stories would be told to the generations unborn.
We salute all seasoned Cadres of the land and pay a glowing tribute to all Cadres
who are no more with us here today...(may their souls have eternal rest), as we uphold
the tenets of the revolution which are probity, accountability and transparency.
Finally, we welcome our very owns, Flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, Chairman
general Asiedu Nketia, General secretary Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, Hon. Zanetor Rawlings and
the entire rank and file of the NDC into the region for this all-important occasion.
The Revolution has a long way to go but has come to stay. Revo, Revo!
