Caring for Seedlings
The beginning growth of a seed is called germination or sprouting
wherein a root is grown to establish itself to the ground, produce its food, then
continue to grow and develop organs. In order for seeds to grow, they need
proper temperature air, and moisture. Others need light or darkness to grow.
The use of high-quality seeds produces high quality fruits. Such as
quality seeds have high percentage of germination, correct moisture content,
and free from pests, weeds, and diseases. Caring for the seeds should begin
from its selection up to storing them.
1. Proper Selection of Seeds.
The used of good quality seeds ensure quality and high yield so it means
big income for the growers’ best source of seeds are the healthy, good
crops. The following are some ways to properly select seeds:
a. Seeds must come only from mature fruits.
b. Seeds must have good germinating capacity
c. Seeds should have been free from mixture of weed seeds.
d. Seeds must be free from damage or diseases.
e. Seeds covered with pulp or with fruit juice must be washed.
2. Testing of Seeds
Plant growers can determine the germinating ability of the seed’s by
testing them. Testing the seeds before planting also prevents wastage
of good seeds or avoid the need to plant again.
Seeds may be tested in any of the following ways:
a. Visual inspection method
Scoop a handful of seeds. Check the composition of the
seeds. Remove the immature broken and infested seeds
LESSON
b. Dish Method
Line the dish with moist tissue paper and some seeds.
Cover it with another sheet of moist tissue paper for
germination and count the seeds.
c. Rag-doll method
Place the seeds in a damp cloth with spaces.
Roll the cloth on a piece of stick to circulate air.
Count the number of seeds that germinated after 3 days.
d. Seed box method
Place a number of seeds in a seed box and sprinkle
with water. Count the seeds that germinated after several
days.
Compute for the percentage of germination.
Number of seeds sown x 100 = Percentage of
Number of seeds sown Germination
3. Storing of Seeds
 The life of the seed must be ensured when storing it.
 Humidity is the most important factors causing deterioration of the
vitality of the seeds when stored at room temperature.
 In case the seeds are stored at room temperature, it should be stored
in sealed container except when the moisture content is reduced.
 If seeds are stored in thick bags, desiccants such as dry charcoal,
dry ash, or toasted white rice are placed or chemicals that absorb
the moist from the materials are added.
The following points are reminders in storing seeds:
a. In using desiccants, remember to use a container with a tight
cover. Place only the desiccants at the bottom part with a
punched-holed cardboard on top. Place the seeds on top of the
cardboard or in an envelope with paper labeling.
b. In cold temperature storing, put dry seeds in a bottle or jar
with tight cover and store only in the low or cold temperature
part of the refrigerator.
c. Label the bottles properly with the name of the seed sand the
date of storage.
d. Examine the bottled seeds without the opening once a month
and check for possible fungi or insect’s infestation.
Taking Care of the Fruit Tree Seedlings
1. Choose seeds that came from the fruit-bearing trees with good form and
free bruises, diseases, and insects’ bites.
2. Sow seeds in the seedbeds with good soil consisting of compost, garden
soil and sandy soil mixed in equal proportions.
3. Plant seeds horizontally about 3 centimeters depth. Cover fine soil and
rice hulls.
4. Water the sown seeds thoroughly.
5. Grow the seedlings preferably in a shed or partially shaded place.
6. Apply fungicides to avoid infestation.
7. Potting may start when 3 or four leaves have sprouted and the height
of 10 centimeters or more has been attained.
8. Place the pots or bags in partially shaded area.
9. Transplanting is done best during late afternoons or when the sun has
set.
10. Put more amounts of fertilizer to young trees that older tress.
Good fertilizers include elements such as nitrogen and minerals like
calcium.
11. Apply fertilizers around the trees. Sprinkler small amount quantities
for your trees, for old trees, small holes 2 to 3 inches deep may be dug
around the base of the tree.
12. Remove grass or weeds around the base and cultivate around the
base to encourage rapid growth in young trees.

  • 6. This is your self-instructional module in TLE 6- Agriculture. All the activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:  proper care for seedlings;  practice systematic care of seedlings. Draw a happy ( ) if you agree and sad face ( ) if you disagree. ____1. Use commercial fertilizer instead of the organic fertilizer. ____2. Always observe health and safety practices in planting. ____3. Follow steps in preparing the seed plot for planting. ____4. Use a hand trowel for loosening soil when cultivating the soil around the seedling. ____5. Plant your seedlings in the afternoon when sunlight is no longer hot to avoid withering. Before we study the lesson, let’s recall the previous discussion we had, about the different ways of planting trees and propagating trees and fruit- bearing trees. A. What are the proper ways of planting trees and fruit-bearing trees? 1. __________________ 4. _____________________ 2. __________________ 5. _____________________ 3. __________________ 6. _____________________ B. Identify the following. _________ 7. The process by which the hard stems of plants are peeled and wrapped with wet soil and plastic in order to grow roots. _________ 8. A plant propagation method that involves inserting a scion into a stock so that they will form a union and grow together. _________ 9. Is a section of a plant stem or branch with three or four leaf buds joined to a stock in grafting. The upper part of grafting. _________10. • 7. Caring for Seedlings The beginning growth of a seed is called germination or sprouting wherein a root is grown to establish itself to the ground, produce its food, then continue to grow and develop organs. In order for seeds to grow, they need proper temperature air, and moisture. Others need light or darkness to grow. The use of high-quality seeds produces high quality fruits. Such as quality seeds have high percentage of germination, correct moisture content, and free from pests, weeds, and diseases. Caring for the seeds should begin from its selection up to storing them. 1. Proper Selection of Seeds. The used of good quality seeds ensure quality and high yield so it means big income for the growers’ best source of seeds are the healthy, good crops. The following are some ways to properly select seeds: a. Seeds must come only from mature fruits. b. Seeds must have good germinating capacity c. Seeds should have been free from mixture of weed seeds. d. Seeds must be free from damage or diseases. e. Seeds covered with pulp or with fruit juice must be washed. 2. Testing of Seeds Plant growers can determine the germinating ability of the seed’s by testing them. Testing the seeds before planting also prevents wastage of good seeds or avoid the need to plant again. Seeds may be tested in any of the following ways: a. Visual inspection method Scoop a handful of seeds. Check the composition of the seeds. Remove the immature broken and infested seeds LESSON
  • 8. b. Dish Method Line the dish with moist tissue paper and some seeds. Cover it with another sheet of moist tissue paper for germination and count the seeds. c. Rag-doll method Place the seeds in a damp cloth with spaces. Roll the cloth on a piece of stick to circulate air. Count the number of seeds that germinated after 3 days. d. Seed box method Place a number of seeds in a seed box and sprinkle with water. Count the seeds that germinated after several days. Compute for the percentage of germination. Number of seeds sown x 100 = Percentage of Number of seeds sown Germination 3. Storing of Seeds  The life of the seed must be ensured when storing it.  Humidity is the most important factors causing deterioration of the vitality of the seeds when stored at room temperature.  In case the seeds are stored at room temperature, it should be stored in sealed container except when the moisture content is reduced.  If seeds are stored in thick bags, desiccants such as dry charcoal, dry ash, or toasted white rice are placed or chemicals that absorb the moist from the materials are added. The following points are reminders in storing seeds: a. In using desiccants, remember to use a container with a tight cover. Place only the desiccants at the bottom part with a punched-holed cardboard on top. Place the seeds on top of the cardboard or in an envelope with paper labeling. b. In cold temperature storing, put dry seeds in a bottle or jar with tight cover and store only in the low or cold temperature part of the refrigerator. c. Label the bottles properly with the name of the seed sand the date of storage. d. Examine the bottled seeds without the opening once a month and check for possible fungi or insect’s infestation.
  • 9. Taking Care of the Fruit Tree Seedlings 1. Choose seeds that came from the fruit-bearing trees with good form and free bruises, diseases, and insects’ bites. 2. Sow seeds in the seedbeds with good soil consisting of compost, garden soil and sandy soil mixed in equal proportions. 3. Plant seeds horizontally about 3 centimeters depth. Cover fine soil and rice hulls. 4. Water the sown seeds thoroughly. 5. Grow the seedlings preferably in a shed or partially shaded place. 6. Apply fungicides to avoid infestation. 7. Potting may start when 3 or four leaves have sprouted and the height of 10 centimeters or more has been attained. 8. Place the pots or bags in partially shaded area. 9. Transplanting is done best during late afternoons or when the sun has set. 10. Put more amounts of fertilizer to young trees that older tress. Good fertilizers include elements such as nitrogen and minerals like calcium. 11. Apply fertilizers around the trees. Sprinkler small amount quantities for your trees, for old trees, small holes 2 to 3 inches deep may be dug around the base of the tree. 12. Remove grass or weeds around the base and cultivate around the base to encourage rapid growth in young trees.
  • 10. Activity 1 Direction: Fill in the blanks with the correct answer. Choose your answer on the box. 1. __________ is the time of the day when planting is ideal. 2. __________ is the depth of the soil when planting seeds. 3. __________ such as dry charcoal, dry ash, or toasted white rice are placed or chemicals that absorb the moist from the seeds. 4. __________ is done best during late afternoons or when the sun has set. 5. __________ are the most important factors causing deterioration of the vitality of the seeds when stored at room temperature, in case the seeds are stored at room. Activity 2 Direction: Write a check mark (/) on the line if the statement is true. If not, write across mark (X). _____ 1. Monitoring the growth of seedlings is important in taking care of the fruit seedlings. _____ 2. Expose the seedlings to direct sunlight. _____ 3. It is important to keep the soil moist to speed the germination process of the seedlings. _____ 4. In taking care of the seedlings, we must place the pots or bags in a partially shaded area. _____ 5.
