Fra Angelico used simple
and direct styles based on
Giotto and Masaccio. It ran
counter to the Florentine
paintings by Fra Filippo
Lippi.

Cranach painted
several painting on the
same theme.
During the Reformation,
women were seen as a
source of sin, humiliation
and perdition.
22. Boucher 1735
Rubens was a successful
Flemish diplomat and painter.
Early in his career, he went to
Italy to study and became a
court painter at the court of the
Duke of Mantua. His paintings
are often dramatic and
passionate.
Van Dyck was one of his
assistance.
30. Gerard 1798
Francois Gerard was a baron. Though David’s
influence he got a position as judge on the
Revolutionary tribunal, during the French
Revolution. It was Gerard who suggested to
David that in his huge Coronation of Napoleon
the Emperor should crown Josephine rather tha
himself.

32. Bouguereau 1889
Bouguereau a representative
and champion of entrenched
academicism.
He was admired in his
lifetime, for figures – mainly
female – of unreal perfection
and coyness on religious as
well as mythological subjects.
38. Toulouse-Lautre 1892
Toulouse-Lautrec made his first
colour print in 1892. He executed a
large number of posters in
lithography, with masterly handling
of highly simplified line, large areas
of flat colour and a unique
concentration on the eye-catching
quality of the design.
He also made small lithographs
either for menu heads, programmes,
book-covers and the like or single
prints.
39. Rodin 1901
Rodin made many versions of the
same sculpture. He “employed
assistant sculptors to copy a smaller
model made from a material when
was easier to work than marble.
Once they had finished, Rodin himself
would put the finishing toues to the
