Assessment of Learning 1
Final Activities
Name: JESEREE E. VILLAVERDE
Instructor: REMRENA D. SANTAMINA
Briefly answer the following.
1. As a college student, you underwent several assessments in basic education. Recall from your
own personal experience an assessment that you think was truly meaningful to you. Explain
why it is so. Explain the nature of and purpose of particular assessment.
Formative Assessment
The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing
feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to
improve their learning. As a college student, it helps me to improve my learning skills and
identify my weaknesses. By the use of formative assessment, it can help to take control
of our own learning, especially when the subject is hard to understand. It also shows the
relationship between the teacher and the student, how the teacher cares about our
success inside the classroom.
2. Discuss the concept of measurement/assessment/evaluation in this situation.
Ms. De Leon, a grade 5 Science teacher, was done with her lesson about rocks and soil erosion.
She gave a test that required students to discuss the type of rocks, how rocks turn into soil and the
effect of soil erosion on living things and the environment. She noted that Susan scored 43 out of
50 in the test. She informed Susan that she satisfactorily attained intended learning outcome and
deserved a grade of 86 with a remark that Susan showed proficiency in the said topic.
Measurement
Ms. De Leon gave a test that required students to discuss the type of rocks, how rocks
turn into soil and the effect of soil erosion on living things and the environment. The
measurement starts after the test or task completed. She checked the correct answer and
Susan got 43 out of 50 in the test.
Assessment
After the checking or scoring, the assessment starts during the recording. It analyzes the
student progress.
Evaluation
Evaluations starts on computing the final grade. It is the process of systematic analysis,
interpretation, or judgement of the worth organized data as a basis of decision making. In
this situation, Ms. De Leon evaluate the score of Susan and got a grade of 86 with a
remark that Susan showed proficiency in the said topic.
2. 3. Determine the role of assessment in the given scenario.
A group of science teachers analyzed the results of the national achievement test given to grade 6
pupils. Most of their students obtained low scores in science. They learned further that their students
had difficulty with items about the physical and chemical changes, forms, and use of energy, and
motion. They thought of a professional development project that focuses on introducing
pedagogical innovations particularly in teaching the said topics. After two years, they saw marked
improvement in the performance of their students in the national test, particularly on science items
about forms of matter, energy, and motion.
In this scenario, a group of science teachers thought about how they will help to improve
the learning skills of their students. So, they thought of a professional development project
that focuses on introducing pedagogical innovations particularly in teaching the said
topics. It has a big help to the student for the reason that after two years, there are
improvements in the performance of their students in the national test.
In other words, the role of assessment in education is very important to develop the
student learning skills.
4. The Taxonomy of cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains have levels called vignettes.
Arrange the learning competencies using the hierarchy from lowest to highest.
Domain: (Cognitive)
Topic A: Quadratic Equations
Applying a. Solve quadratic equations by factoring
Remembering b. Describe quadratic equations
Understanding c. Compare the four methods of solving quadratic equations
Analyzing d. Differentiate quadratic equations from other types of equations in terms of form
and degree
Creating e. Formulate real-life problems involving quadratic equations
Evaluating f. Examine the nature or roots of quadratic equation
5. Scenario-Based/Problem Solving Learning
As the department head or principal, what action would you take on the following matters? Provide
your recommendations based on the principals of validity and reliability.
Scenario 1: Mr. Roa taught the different elements and principles of art. After the instruction, he
administered a test about prominent painters and sculptors in the 20th century.
Would you recommend revisions? Why?
As the department head, I would recommend revisions for the test he will give to his
student due to the inappropriate topic. He taught the different elements and principles of
art, and then he administered a test about prominent painters and sculptors in the 20th
century. This must be wrong, for the reason that the student learned about another topic.
Students will have a failed score if they answer the test without even studying about it.
Teachers should be responsible on every test they will give to the student to avoid
confusion, and also, they should maintain the improvements of the student's learning skill.
3. 6. Ms. Loreto handles six grade 5 classes in English. She would like to test their skills in spelling.
She has two options:
A. Oral Spelling Test (The test pronounces each word out loud and the students write down
each word.)
B. Spelling Bee-type test (Each student is asked individually one-at-a-time to spell words
out loud.)
In terms of practicality and efficiency, which one would you suggest? Why?
Since Ms. Loreto handles six grade 5 students in English, I would suggest the first one
which is the Oral Spelling Test. I know that some of the students might be pressured when
the teacher asked individually one-at-a-time. The benefits of the first option will give the
student confidence to answer correctly, and for the student to improve their learning skills
without any hesitation or being pressured.
7. Discuss what the statement means.
“Teachers must consider what message they want to communicate through grading, who the
primary audience for the message is, and what the intended goals of the communication is”
(Guskey, 2004,35).
In my own opinion, the statement above wants to convey to us that through grading, this
is the result of what the student has learned from the teacher. If the student has a failed
grade, it is possible that the student didn’t pass complete requirements or didn’t answer
the exam correctly. So, through grading, parents will notice the problem with their child.
Communication is very important in education to help the relationship between the student
and parent, since some of the parents don't have time with their child to teach. Teachers
are the only ones who become the second parent of every student, and parents are the
ones who need to know the situation of their child in school to help them to know the
importance of education in their life that will give them a better future.
