2. THE AREA FOR THE MASTERPLAN DEVELOPMENT RUNS ALONG
SIDE THE RIVER TRENT IN NEWARK, LINCOLNSHIRE.
SURORUNDED BY RESIDENTIAL HOUSING THE SITE IS
SUPPRISINGLY UNDER-USED WITH VERY FEW FACILITIES.
WORKING AS A GROUP, THE AREA WAS DIVIDED INTO
THREE QUARTERS, THE CULTURAL QUARTER, FOOD AND
LEISURE QUARTER, AND THE ACTIVITY QUARTER. THIS
WAS TO MAXIMISE FULL USE OF THE SITE. SMALL,
PROPOSED STRUCTURES WERE ARRANGED ACCORDING TO
THEIR FACILITY WITHIN THE QUARTERS.

4. THE DISTORTION AND FRAGMENTATION OF MEMORY OVER
TIME WAS THE MAIN CONCEPT THAT WAS PUSHED THROUGH
THIS PROJECT. DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTIGATION
THROUGH CONCEPTUAL MODELS AND DRAWINGS HELPED
TO TRANSLATE THE INITIAL CONCEPTS INTO THE
ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE OF THE FINAL DESIGN.

11. THE HOLDERNESS COAST IS ONE OF THE FASTEST ERODING
COASTLINES IN EUROPE. CLIMATE CHANGE, RISING SEA
LEVELS AND THE REPETITIVE RHYTHM OF THE TIDE ARE
BATTERING THE SOFT SEDIMENT OF THE GLACIAL CLIFFS.
WITH A RETREAT OF AROUND 2M PER YEAR, HOUSES AND
ARABLE LAND ARE FALLING INTO THE SEA AT VISIBLE
RATES RESULTING IN WHOLE VILLAGES BEING LOST AND
ULTIMATELY FORGOTTEN BENEATH THE NORTH SEA.
STRETCHING FROM THE MORE RESILIENT HEADLAND AND
SELECTED SITE OF FLAMBOROUGH HEAD, TO THE SPIT OF
SPURN POINT, THE HOLDERNESS LANDSCAPE PROVIDES A
DRAMATIC REMINDER OF THE FORCES OF NATURE AND THE
FRAGILE IMPERMANENCE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT.
WITH ROADS DISAPPEARING OFF THE CLIFF EDGE AND
REMNANTS OF LOST VILLAGES SCATTERING THE SHORE,
THE COAST IS INTRIGUING TO THOSE THAT VISIT.
PHOTOGRAPHING THE OBSCURE EDGE CONDITIONS,
THE PUBLIC UNINTENTIONALLY FACILITATE THE
DOCUMENTATION OF THIS DISINTEGRATING TERRITORY.
COUPLED WITH GEOLOGICAL RESEARCHERS THEY VISUALLY
RECORD THE RETREATING CLIFF EDGE TO BE UPLOADED,
EXHIBITED AND ARCHIVED WITHIN THE PUBLIC PROPOSAL
AT FLAMBOROUGH.
DRAWING FROM THE PASSIVE INFLUENCE PHOTOGRAPHS
HAVE ON OUR MEMORIES OF PLACE AND THEIR EXPRESSION
OF OUR DESIRE TO HOLD ONTO SOMETHING, THE BUILDING
BECOMES THE COLLECTION AND DISSEMINATION OF THE
VISUAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE RETREATING HOLDERNESS.
WITH REFERENCE TO MONOLITHIC RELICS, OVERLAPPING
GEOLOGICAL PLANES AND THE ONE DIRECTIONAL
LINEARITY OF EROSION, THE DESIGN AIMS TO CHALLENGE
OUR PERCEPTION OF WHAT IS DEEMED FAMILIAR AND
PERMANENT.
FOR THE REMAINING SMALL VILLAGES THAT OCCUPY THE
SACRIFICIAL COAST THERE WILL IN TIME, BECOME ONLY
ONE OPTION, TO RETREAT. ULTIMATELY, THE AIM IS
NOT TO PRESERVE PHYSICALLY BUT RATHER TO PRESERVE
VISUALLY.
