The report was put to-
gether by 202020 Vision, ang

space in urban areas by 20s
per cent by 2020. The re-p
search was carried out by thes
University of Technology,U
Sydney, using a software pro-S
gram called i-Tree Canopy.g
hitting the 20 per cent im-
provement target in six years
would be challenging.
“Western Sydney was
proportion of potentially
plantable spaces, with Black-
town, Camden, Fairfield, Liv-
erpool and Penrith all
boasting significant areas of
grass-bare ground that could
potentially be planted,” the
report said.
It advised that increasing
the tree canopy along a corri-
dor from the eastern suburbs
to Parramatta could help
manage debilitating high
during summer.
Susanne Hanke, who lives
at Avalon in Pittwater, said
the tree-lined streets were a
huge part of the area’s attrac-
tion. “The trees help make it a
unique and tranquil environ-
ment,” she said. “They bring
lots of birds and wildlife,
make it cooler in the summer
and you really feel like you’re
living in a beautiful spot.”
Anthony Kachenko, from
the National Urban Forest
Alliance, said: “Benefits are
reduced pollution, improved
air quality, decreased utility
costs and better health.”
