On Monday the 17th of September I wound up my year's term as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney. This is a small snap shot of the things I was able to get done over the past 12 months in that role and a thanks to the people who played a role in making it happen.
Deputy Lord Mayor of Sydney 17-18 Wrap Up & Thanks
1. Deputy Lord Mayor for the City of Sydney
Shit that got done this year,
and legends that made it all possible.
Deputy Lord Mayor for the City of Sydney
DLM 2017-18 Wrap-up & Thanks.
3. #1 Dealing with the bloody lock-out laws
It took about a year to figure out what we could do about
them, but October last year my Late Night DCP NoM was
put to council and the review of Sydney’s Map of Fun is well
and truly underway. As is work addressing Agent of Change,
less red tape for creative uses of space and extended retail
trading hours. We also got a Late Night Panel that Clr JScull
is taking care of and you’ll see it come to live real, real soon.
4.
5.
6. Introduction of a Notice of Motion to urgently review
the Late Night Development Control Plans
10k+ submissions as part of late night consultation
(with a HUGE thanks to industry and YOU)
A new night time panel
And shortly, a new map of fun for Sydney.
9. For Youth Week this year, I invited actual young people to
apply to become a Deputy Deputy Lord Mayor. Around 60
people did, and so throughout Youth Week we hung out and
wherever possible they got to represent themselves and the
young people in the City. I even got a badge made, bcs -
why not?

10. Deputy Deputy Lord Mayor
The DDLM week culminated in a round table discussion
about youth issues with councillors, city staff and local
member Alex Greenwich MP
12. This year alone, I’ve spoken at countless rallies, marched,
yelled, said lots of swear words - but have also been
incredibly inspired and fortified working alongside the
absolute mess that is Westconnex. In collaboration with local
groups the City designed alternatives, undertaken traffic
studies and supported Marches, research and undertaken
advocacy to help protect agains this ridiculous road.
We can’t claim victory…Yet. But the fight will continue.
13.
14. One of the highlights was working with community groups like
Westconnex Action Group, ARAG, Fix Transport NSW and
other legends like
Alex Greenwich MP
Jenny Leong MP
Clr Pauline Lockie
Wendy Bacon
So thanks for all of the inspiration and hard work.
15. #4 Breathable Sydney
12 months ago, I wondered ‘where are the air pollution
monitors in Sydney’…We discovered the way air pollution in
Sydney is monitored is really bad. Not only that, it doesn’t
actually meet national standards.
So we got busy trying to get not only an ambient air
pollution monitoring station in the City of Sydney, but also
looked at new technology to measure what kind of air
people are being exposed to.
16. We also discovered some very interesting things how the NSW Government measures
air pollution in the City.
17. Mentors & judges included Eamon Waterford from the Committee for
Sydney, Tim Williams from Arup, Siobhan Toohill from Westpac, Alexia
Ledis, Johanna Pitman from Blue Chilli, Murray Bell from
Semipermanent, Liam Timms from Lendlease and Susan Farr.
The Hackathon
19. Notice Of Motion - air pollution
Air pollution monitoring will
become a key environmental
indicator in all future Sydney
2050 work.
Fixed and mobile air pollution
monitoring devices will be a
part of all smart city projects
I know, I know.
Notices of Motion are not very sexy, but can be quite important in terms of getting things done.
20. Figured out air monitoring in NSW was rubbish.
Asked the EPA to politely put one in the City.
Was taking too long.
Tried out some new technology from Paris in a
Hackathon.
New wearable and fixed location monitoring systems
currently being developed.
Air pollution monitoring a new standard for all future
environmental (and transport) planning.
24. Women for Election Australia
I spent the day learning form
and sharing experiences with
other women in, or considering
participating in local
government.
26. In collaboration with TimeOut,
the Solotel Group, Republic of
Everyone, the Last Straw, the
War on Waste, and a whole
swag of nighttime, hospitality
and small bar legends we
launched the
#sydneydoesntsuck campaign
to reduce single-use plastic
straw.
27. Mass collaboration with NGOs, media, industry and
punters.
Avoided approximately 6 million straws being used
throughout the Opera House precinct in one year
alone.
Worked with the Opera House to create an artwork as
part of the Antidote festival.
Create a load of awareness.
Nominated for a Good Food award.
28. So a HUGE thanks to…
Longrain
Ching-a-lings
Joyride
Mark from the
Hollywood
(there are too
many to put
on one page!)
29.
30. So they were the big campaigns and project over the past year.
There were also around..
31. 747 meetings
287 ‘council days’
A ‘day job’
80 events representing the Lord Mayor
On average of 9 events per week
Busiest week 64 hours
Average week = 54 hours
10 Council Meetings
Approximately 500 coffees
32. There was also much ‘hard-hatting’, ribbon-
cutting, cake-eating, award-giving, and plenty
of community hang-time.
There were also some excellent dress-ups and a LOT of
Christmas.
Oh, and Kelly Rowland (OMG!).
39. So what’s next?
I’m not the DLM any more by my term at the City of Sydney as a Councillor
doesn’t come up for another 2 years.
The Demons will win the Grand Final
I’ll continue to collaborate with everyone to bring about change for the
City, especially on the environmental front.
The Spring Cycle is coming up.
The new Map of Fun will come out for you to have a say on really soon.
I’m exploring lots of ideas about biophillic (look it up!) cities and interesting
ways of using city spaces.
I’m headed to Paris and Bristol to learn more about renewable energy and
resilient cities.
I’ll be spending more time at work to make the $$$
40. And big love and thanks to Clover, Jess, Philip, Robert
and all of our awesome support staff for making it a
cracker of a year.
