Style Sheet – Masthead Fonts
Birds of Paradise: I like the way this font looks
formal yet attractive with the curliness of the
letters. I think the font is particularly effective in
the ‘Riff’ part of the title as I think it suits the
word
American Captain: I like how eye catching this
font is however I’m not sure whether it is too
bold to go with the other fonts I would use on my
front cover and whether it would stand out too
much
Geomancy/hairline: I think this font would be
quite effective as a masthead as it is very modern
and unique, however it is too thin and not very
bold but this could be fixed in Photoshop
60s Stripe: Similarly to the second font, the issue
with 60’s stripe is that it is too thin and may not be
bold enough to be a masthead. However I really
like the double lined look of this font
Style Sheet – Final Masthead Fonts
I decided to use a combination of 2 of the fonts I looked at; Birds of
Paradise and 60’s Stripe. I love how the ‘Riff’ looks formal and curly as it
really suits the word, and as this is the most important part of the
masthead I decided to make it considerably bigger than ‘magazine’. This
will be effective as it will draw reader’s attention to my magazine and
instantly be recognisable from others. I think the word magazine suits
the font 60’s stripe as it is the simple part of the masthead and it is a
very simple font.
Fonts
I am going to try to use the same fonts through out all of my work so they look as consistent as
possible as I think this looks very professional. However I know there will be certain texts the
fonts won’t work with so I will have to work around this by finding fonts that match. For my
headings on my contents page I have chosen to use Mouse Deco. I really like the way this font
is bold and how the letters fit together, I think this will be an effective heading as it will stand
out from plainer texts. Another font I have used on my contents page is Coolvetica, it works
with the other font but I like the way it isn’t as rigid as Mouse Deco, and therefore it will be
more suitable for text on the contents page rather than headings.
Colour Scheme
Throughout my 3 pieces, I want to keep a consistent colour scheme as I
think this looks very aesthetically pleasing and will hopefully allow my
magazine to look as professional as possible.
The main colours I am going to use are red, black, several shades of blue
and white.
I believe these will be effective colours as together they will be eye-
catching while allowing me to achieve consistency as well as some
differences through the different shades.
Style Sheet – Masthead Colours
This is my original masthead
idea in 3 different colour
samples. I want my masthead
to be as bold and eye-catching
as possible and based on this I
think red will be the most
effective, as it will stand out
from the other text on the
pages but will also compliment
the other colours on the pages.
Sample Front Covers
My initial idea for my cover was
to have the main image as the
main focus and have the
surrounding text blend in and
not stand out too much like
some of the magazines I have
researched. Therefore I am
going to base my front cover
around the layout on the left as
much as possible.
Photography Planning - Cover
 I really like how on all of these covers, the artist is the main focus. Their
name is bold and visible straight away as well as the obvious main feature of
the image. I think this layout/size is very effective as a front cover as it draws
all the readers attention to the artist, this not only makes the magazine stand
out but also attracts the attention of the artist’s fans.
 When taking the images for my cover, I am going to use these covers as
inspiration and go for either medium shot or medium close up. I also want to
have enough space around the image to fit in subheadings and other features.
Ideally I only want to have one main image on my cover as I think smaller
images take away from the effectiveness of only one.
Sample contents page
Similarly to my cover, I have chosen to have a
relatively simplistic layout for my contents page.
The main focuses will be the contents list and
the main image, along with 3 smaller sub images
further down the page. In keeping with the
cover, the logo/masthead will be placed at the
top of the page along with the issue number and
contents heading.
Photography Planning – Contents Page
 Similarly to the look of my cover image, I want the main image on my
contents page to be professional and ideally in a studio as this gives the best
results.
 The idea I have for my contents page is that the main image will be of a girl
band and there will be a lot of focus on them. The type of shot I will use will
be a long shot or medium shot, as I want the girl band to be in focus as much
as possible.
 The 3 smaller images will also be shot in this fun, relaxed way but I am going
to use close ups of a different artist as this will draw readers into more
stories.
Sample Double Page Spread
In keeping with the theme of my cover
and contents page, my double page
spread is going to focus heavily on the
main image which will also act as a
background. The title and text of the
story will be in transparent text boxes
so that the picture can be seen fully,
but it will be in a colour which means it
will be noticeable while fitting in with
the rest of the page. There will be 2
columns of text to allow enough room
for a good story while allowing the
background to still be seen, and a pull
quote in the middle.
Photography Planning - DPS
This layout is very similar to how I want my finished piece to look, I love the
simplicity of it while including everything a double page spread should have.
I don’t want my image to be like the one shown here as I think it is too
provocative for my magazine and would be very difficult to recreate, however I
do want to have an image that it the same type of shot and angle as I think they
are what makes this image so effective. Also, I want to have as much space
around the model in the image as this example does so there is enough room for
all the text.
Final Photography Planning – Contents Page
I didn’t take very many pictures for
my contents page as I knew I wouldn’t
need that many, however I am
pleased with the outcomes as the
picture I have circled is very close to
what I wanted for my contents page
and is the one I am going to use. I
wanted either a long or medium shot
and I think I have achieved this, the
photo is very posed but they look
relaxed and happy and the medium
shot shows this off as well as their
clothes, which are fashionable and
this will be appealing to my target
audience as my target age range will
have a lot of involvement in fashion.
Final Photography Planning - Cover
The image I have circled in blue is the
image I am going to use as my cover
photo. I am very pleased with this
image as it is exactly what I set out to
achieve! I deliberately put red lipstick
on the model so that it would match
my masthead as I think it works
particularly well due to the fact it
contrasts with the other colours in the
picture and stands out a lot, I also
managed to achieve white space
around the model to fit my text in.
The images circled in red are images
that were potential cover images but I
am actually going to use them on my
contents page to give readers an idea
of what it to come on the double page
spread.
Flat Plan
This is the final layout
for my magazine, I chose
I have 30 pages so that
my magazine isn’t too
long as doesn’t need to
fill space with
unnecessary things. I
have also included
adverts as this is a
typical convention of
magazines.
