GOOD, BAD AND UGLY OF INTERVIEWS
THE POWER OF THANK YOU NOTES
If you think not sending a “thank you” note following each job interview then you’re committing a
faux pas in job search etiquette. If you think that a “thank you” note is just a nicety, think again. Here
are three reasons to send that post-interview thank you note;
• You demonstrate professionalism
• You’ll stand out since most candidates never take the time to send a “thank you”
• You have the opportunity to add a comment or insight that was missed in the interview
The post-interview thank you note should be written immediately following the interview and mailed
within 24 hours. Be absolutely certain you have the correct spelling and title of the interviewer (be
sure to get their business card at the end of the interview)
THANK YOU NOTE FORMAT
• First, be sure to let the interviewer know that you appreciate the time he or she spent in the
interview process
• Second, add a positive statement about something you learned about the position or the
company
• Third, add a comment concerning something that was discussed during the interview. For
example, if the employer made a passing comment about the office’s need to upgrade their
current medical files then you might add a note about how you’re ready to help the office
employees through the transition
• Fourth, be sure to re-state your interest and availability
Saying “thank you” will leave a strong and positive impression with any potential employer. You may
be surprised to find that good manners can lead to a good job.
POST-INTERVIEW CALLS
Do wait at least two to three days to place the call
• An interval of a few days is long enough so that they will have had time to get organized, while the interview
remains fresh in their minds.
Don’t let gatekeepers intercept your call
• Try to avoid being re-routed to anybody who was not present at your interview. Otherwise, your follow-up
objectives will not be accomplished. If they are unavailable, politely ask when your interviewer will be available
for a brief chat.
Do ask whether the position has been filled
• Once you have interviewer on the phone, being by politely refreshing their memory and introducing yourself. After
you’ve ensure s/he has a few moments to speak, ask whether the position is filled. If it hasn’t, followup by asking
if you are still being considered for the position.
Don’t apply the hard sell
• If you find out the hiring manager is still making a decision, avoid providing a long list of why you qualify for the
position. Instead express your continued interest in the position and your enthusiam for the business in a polite
manner.
Do ask for a timeline
• Just like in an interview, it’s helpful to end your follow-up call by confirming the next step in the process.
Conclude the call by expressing your gratitude for the opportunity to chat and touch base.
CHECKLIST FOR INTERVIEW SUCCESS
Arrive early
• Get reliable directions the night before, and do everything in your power to show up ten minutes before
your scheduled appointment. Nothing says “unprofessional” like late to your first interview
Make a good first impression
• Right attitude is equal warmth, politeness, humble gratitude, sincerity, and
enthusiasm
Sell yourself
• Don’t rely on your resume to help you land the job. Let them know how you can help them succeed.
Keep tabs on your body language
It’s important to relax, but don’t let yourself get too comfortable. Maintain good posture and eye contact

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Example: A manager had 23 applicants for an open position. They all looked great from the applications and resumes. The position required excellent telephone skills. She decided to call each person first. All 23 candidates were taken out of the running because of the way they answered the phone. It saved her a lot of time and effort by making the calls first
