The Executive Branch of the West Virginia University Student Government Association consists of the President and Vice President elected by students. They appoint an Executive Cabinet that oversees various departments. The Legislative Branch consists of 15 elected Board members who approve appointments, the budget, and pass resolutions. The Judicial Branch, made up of law, graduate and undergraduate students, interprets documents and certifies elections. The Athletic Council has two student liaisons to athletics.

Student Government Association
The Executive Branch
Description
The Executive Branch consists of the President and Vice President as elected by the student
body. Within the first three weeks of the term of the new administration, the two work together
to appoint the remainder of the Executive Cabinet, with final board approval.
President
The SGA President acts as the representative of the student body within all other university
governing bodies and serves as a voting member of the University Board of Governors. The
President is also responsible for all oversight of executive projects and committees, and can
create or dissolve positions as deemed necessary.
Vice President
The SGA Vice President performs and aids in all duties as delegated by the President, serves as
Chairman during all formal meetings, and serves in the absence of the President. The Vice
President is also responsible for tracking the progress made by the legislative branch.
Attorney General
The Attorney General is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Board of Governors.
The SGA AG serves as Parliamentarian of the Board, represents Student Government before
University disciplinary and academic committees and the Judicial Board, ensures that the
administration follows the constitution according to his or her interpretation. The Attorney
General also works closely with the Vice President in ensuring progress within the legislative
branch.

The Legislative Branch
Description
This branch consists of the fifteen total board members who are elected by the student body. The
SGA Vice President serves as chairperson and the Attorney General as parliamentarian at
meetings of the Board of Governors.
Powers and Functions
The first major responsibility of the Board is to give final discussion and approval of all
Presidential executive appointments and the proposed budget for the year. Overall this body
meets every week to pass resolutions, proclamations, and vote on grants to be given to various
student organizations after council from the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer. There are also
two Open Student Forum portions of the meetings for students to come up and voice their
concerns about the university to the Board.
3. Vice-Chairperson of the Board
The Board elects a vice-chairperson at the first meeting following inauguration among the fifteen
elected governors. The Vice-Chair is responsible for preparing an agenda for each meeting of the
Board and distributing it 24 hours prior to the meeting and fulfills all duties of the Chairperson in
his or her absence.
The Judicial Branch
Composition
The Judicial Board consists of nine members with one serving as Chair. Of those nine members,
five are law students, two are graduate students, and two are undergraduate students. The Chair
must be a law student and is elected by the Judicial Board after all members have been approved.
There is then a Clerk that is appointed to a one year term by Judicial Board Chair.
Powers and Functions
This branch works to interpret the SGA Constitution, Elections Code, By-Laws, and any
legislation established by the Board. The Judicial Board also certifies the validity of the general
election, conducts any hearings of alleged election violations, and imposes appropriate sanctions.
Athletic Council
Description
The Athletic Council consists of two students also elected by the student body during the annual
SGA Election. These students act as a liaison between the student body and the WVU Athletic
Department.
