Filming Diary
1. Filming Diary:
19/11/13 This week we have been able to finish our formal proposal and made phone calls to
different sandwich shops such as subway to ask for interviews with their
employees, this was incredibly difficult as some people were quite sceptical about
being recorded and what would happen to the information that they spoke about.
After this issue was resolved, I successfully got my group an interview with the
store manager at subway for next week. We were also able to get an interview with
buttercrust for the week after. I made a plan of what we needed to do and what to
prioritise for when we went out recording, so that we knew what we were doing
each day. In the lesson on the 15th
we recorded some small cut away shots of the
café’s as we didn’t have enough time to go out and there was no one in college at
3pm anyway.
21/11/13 Today I finished the formal proposal and got it checked so that we could start
planning what to footage to record first and to make phone calls to sandwich stores
to arrange interviews with employees/managers. Finding interviews with store
employees was quite difficult because some people were sceptical about being
recorded as they didn’t understand what would be done with the information they
answered questions to. Although, I was successfully able to arrange an interview
with a subway manager for my group, close to college the following week after this.
`
22/11/13 Today, we got our questions that we were planning to ask everyone we were going
to interview (employees, voxpops, and other interviews etc). We took a while to
get the right questions for our documentary because it wasn’t clear. By the end of
the lesson we got the OK off our teacher, this meant that we were able to book
cameras out and plan to do voxpops in the next lesson.
25/11/13 Today, we went out to attempt to record voxpops. Unfortunately, we were unable
to get any at all because members of our target audience would simply say no to
us. We expected this to happen because most people will be out for a reason and
not to take time out for recording.
26/11/13 In this lesson, we did some cut-aways in the college cafes of the sandwich bar areas
and the already made sandwiches, we were going to see if there was anyone
around to do some small voxpops, but it was 3pm and most students had gone
home at this point. After, this we put the footage onto the computer, and looked
over it to see if it was good enough to be used – which it was – and then we went
back to the classroom, where I planned what to do at the start of next week.
28/11/13 Today, we did some small voxpops in the college by asking college students if they
would for us. These people were much more willing than the public outside of
college, so we got three small voxpops. When we put the footage onto the
computer, we found that one of the interviews weren’t very good as the shot it was
recorded in, the person was too close to the middle of the view rather than the
side. We decided we weren’t going to use this footage, so we got two usable
voxpops.
29/11/13 Today, we were meant to be interviewing the subway manager that I set up. He
sent me a text saying that he wasn’t comfortable doing this interview after he’d
thought about it properly, after this information; I spent a bit of time calling up
other subway stores to see if we could get another interview with someone else as
we desperately needed an interview with a subway sandwich store employee. And
the other people in my group went to the college café to see if one of the dinner
lady’s would do an interview as they make sandwiches there often. By the end of
2. this lesson I was able to arrange an interview with an employee who works for
buttercrust - a sandwich store around the corner from college – for the following
day. The interview with the cafe lady was not useable.
2/12/13 Today, we went to buttercrust to do an interview with the employee. We were
originally meant to do it with the woman who worked there but she asked another
guy called Daniel, to do it because she didn’t want to anymore. We got alright
footage from this and also got a few cut-aways of the shop, outside and inside. We
put the footage on the computer to look through it and I found that the way the
employee from buttercrust was stood was not in the right direction as the camera’s
shot only saw one side of his face. Although, there were some parts of the
interview that were good and the correct shot and stance, so it wasn’t a complete
loss. Also, the cut-aways were a bit jittery, which personally, I don’t think are very
professional, so I’d prefer to re-do them another time. I booked a camera over
night to do more recording at home, not just in sandwich stores and supermarkets.
3/12/13 Tonight I didn’t have much time to do a lot of recording because I had work all night
but I was still able to get some shots of my boyfriend and friend making a sandwich
at home. I don’t think this was the best footage and could have been organised
better but I think it is still usable for the documentary. I’m going to take the camera
home again tomorrow.
5/12/13 Today, I recorded an over shoulder shot of my brother making a sandwich from
scratch, which actually took longer than I thought it would. I also recorded him and
my sister eating the sandwich so that I could use this in the cut-aways.
6/12/13 In the morning, I put the footage from the weekend onto the computer to look over
it and I found some shots were good to use and some weren’t so me and my group
will have to cut them when we get to editing. We were able to get an interview
with a subway manager up the road from college. This was a really lucky chance for
us and we were also able to get many cut aways here. When we played back the
footage, it was really good and professional and I’m happy with today’s progress. I
also put the footage from the weekend onto the computer to played it back and it
was usable footage. Later that day, I also made a plan of what we could do with the
week so that I could find what to prioritise, but I need to go through this plan with
my group tomorrow.
9/12/13 Today, the other people in my group decided that we should go along with my plan
for the week. So today we went out to try to do some voxpops again, this time we
were successful, and even though we only got two, they were useable and it’s
better than none at all. Although, when I played back one of the voxpops, the man
sometimes doesn’t answer with the question in it so if we used this it wouldn’t be
as easy to understand to the audience. Although, the whole voxpop with the man
wasn’t all like that, he answered with the question a few times so we still have
useable footage.
10/12/13 Today, we went to record some cut aways for the documentary as I realised we
were lacking this out of all of the footage. We went to superstores such as the co-
op, Sainsbury’s etc, to record sandwich meal deals and the variety of sandwiches as
this is what a topic of our documentary includes. These were good shots when we
played them back on the computer.
11/12/13 Today , we were able to interview the subway store manager close to college, but
not the same employee who cancelled with us last time. The interviewing took all
the time we had so we didn’t have any time for cut aways today. It was a good
interview and the camera angles were all good, so was the sound and lighting. This
footage was definitely useable.
13/12/13 Today, we went back to subway to do the cut aways we didn’t have time for last
3. time. The cut aways were good as we got a variety of different shots. We also got a
reconstruction of someone buying a subway. When we got back and looked at the
footage, most if not all of it was useable. Coming to the end of recording now
because we have all the footage, we need. I have booked out a camera for the
weekend, as I would rather have too much footage than too little. I’m going to do
some cut away shots of small things such as bread, fillings, people eating
sandwiches, etc.
14/12/13 -
15/12/13
This weekend, I have been able to do quite a few good cut aways. I’ve interviews
my brother about sandwiches and it wasn’t the best quality but it’s useable.
16/12/13 Editing starts here.
