1. PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS
The Winston-Salem Symphony Youth Orchestras Program
is made up of 100–150 talented student musicians from our
region. The program is currently comprised of three ensembles:
Premiere Strings: Beginner
Youth Philharmonic: Intermediate
Youth Symphony: Advanced
The three ensembles rehearse weekly and perform multiple
concerts throughout the year. For information on the Youth
Orchestras Program or details about auditioning, please visit
WSSYO.org.
Each year, the Winston-Salem Symphony holds a student concerto
competition, named in honor of Peter Perret, Conductor Emeritus. The
competition was developed to identify North Carolina’s most gifted
and talented young musicians. Many winners of the competition have
gone on to become professional musicians, including the very first
winner, who is now a member of the New York Philharmonic.

of Winston-Salem and inspired by Venezuela’s ground-breaking
El Sistema, is an intensive after-school program for young people
wishing to develop their musical talent. The program is inclusive
of intensive ensemble training on instruments, basic music skills,
and social development–enabling every child to contribute in the
ensemble, at school, at home, and within society to their absolute
highest potential.

2. Musicians in the Classroom and in the CommunityMary Starling Program
Musicians, both individual and in ensembles of all sizes, bring
their training and performance experience directly to students
and audiences throughout the Triad. Programs are specifically
designed to enhance your school music program or to engage your
local community. These programs give students and audiences an
opportunity to meet the musicians of the Winston-Salem Symphony,
experience a live performance, see the instruments up close, and
enhance understanding of music, performance practice, and much
more. Program prices vary according to the scope of your group’s
needs, duration, and location.
The goal of this program is to introduce all 4th and 5th grade Winston-
Salem/Forsyth County School students to the symphony orchestra. In
Phase One of the program, woodwind, brass, string, and percussion
ensembles visit and perform for all 4th and 5th graders, giving them
a close up view of the instruments and how they work. In Phase Two,
all 5th graders are transported to a formal concert hall to experience a
full symphony orchestra concert.
Meet Guest Artists Outreach Instrument Petting Zoo
The Winston-Salem Symphony
often teams up with local schools
and community organizations to
present intimate opportunities
with visiting artists and guest
composers. Visiting artists share
their insights and experience with
students and adults.
Visits are often arranged on
short notice as artists become
available, and details are subject
to change pending their rehearsal
and performance schedules.
The Winston-Salem Symphony’s
Instrument Petting Zoo brings
the magic and excitement of
holding and playing orchestral
instruments to local schools and
community events.
Learn how to make sounds on
musical instruments from all four
families of orchestral instruments.
Test your ability to identify
instruments by their sounds in a
fun musical game! The petting
zoo is facilitated
by trained volunteers.
Meet the Maestro
When they are not on the podium, Maestro Robert Moody and
Assistant Conductor Stephen Mulligan can be found visiting
students and adults of all ages at schools, libraries, and
community centers throughout the Triad to discuss music and
assist with rehearsals.
