HISTORY OF BASKETBALL
Basketball came to existence through the ingenuity of Dr.
James Naismith.
December 5, 1891
Invention of Basketball
Dr. James Naismith (a physical education teacher at YMCA in
Springfield, MA) invented the Basketball to keep his student
active during the cold winter months of Massachusetts.
The game was played with a Peach Basket (nailed to the wall
10 feet off the ground and a soccer ball).
Dribbling was not originally allowed in the game.

First official game
Played at a YMCA in Albany, New York with 9 players

First College Basketball
Played between Hamline University and School of Agriculture

Women’s Basketball debuted at the 1976 games in Montreal.

Summer Olympics in Barcelona
NBA players were allowed to play for their National Team
March 27, 1939
University of Oregon defeats Ohio State University (46-33) to
win the first ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
MARCH MADNESS as the tournament became known and
grown exponentially in size and popularity since 1939.
1946
The Basketball Association of America (BAA) was formed.
This was a professional league

The NBA was formed
The BAA merged with the National Basketball League to form
the National Basketball Association (NBA).
1950 – 1951
The NBA began to racially integrate

Implementation of the Modern Basketball
Tony Hinkle (late 1950’s when he invented the more visible
orange-rubber basket that is used today).

Dribbling becomes part of the game
Once the manufacturing of basketball became universal, the
technique of dribbling was implemented as the basketball were
more consistently shaped.
1967
The second professional league called the American
Basketball Association (ABA)
ABA was founded and played with a three-point shot
They folded in 1967 and 4 teams joined the NBA
NBA continues to be one of the most popular leagues in the
country.
1968
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
Hall of Fame was created (it was named in the Honor of the
Creator of the Game Basketball, James Naismith).

ABA-NBA merger

An upstart organization, the ABA, emerged in 1967 and briefly
threatened the NBA’s dominance until the ABA-NBA merger
in 1976.
Today the NBA is the top professional basketball league in the
world in terms of popularity, salaries, talent and the level of
competition.
NBA Draft 1984
Considered to be one of the most celebrated drafts in the
history
Some of the biggest names in the sport came into the league
including a junior out of the University of North Carolina
called Michael Jordan.
Alongside Jordan, players like John Stockton, Charles
Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon were also drafted.
February 6, 1988
Most ICONIC DUNK of all time occurred at the hands of
Michael Jordan in the NBA dunk contest during All-Star
Weekend.
Michael Jordan had won the dunk contest the year prior and
was arguably in the athletic prime of his career.
In search of perfect 50, Jordan decided to push his physical
limits by attempting a dunk never seen before.
In the last round of the dunk contest, Jordan ran up the court and
took off from the free throw line and slammed the ball through
the hoop. This dunk won him the contest and is often rewarded
as a highlight of his career.
HOW DOES SCORING WORKD IN BASKETBALL?
Points are scored anytime a player puts the ball through the
basket.

The number of points awarded is based on the shot type and the
distance from the basket that shot is taken from.
Free Throws
It is granted when a player is fouled in the act of shooting the
ball.
If the shot is missed, the shooter is awarded.

Two (2) free throws for 2-point shot
Three (3) free throws for 3-point shot
It is also granted when the team committing a foul in the
penalty, which is when a team commits at least five (5) fouls
in a single quarter.
Beginning with the fifth foul, any defensive or loose ball foul
results in two free throw for the opposing team, whatever they
are shooting the ball or not.
2 – Point Baskets
Most common type of Scoring
Any shot that is made from inside of the 3-poiny line (22 feet)
and can be done with a jump shot, layout or dunk.
3-Point Baskets
NBA introduced the 3-point line during the 1979-80 season
which rewarded players for making shots from long distance
with an extra point.
Before then, all shots that came during live action counted for 2-
points.
HISTORY OF BASKETBALL IN THE PHILIPPINES
Number one (1) sport in the Philippines despite from
emerging sports such as badminton and football, it still remains
etched in the hearts and minds of the sports-loving Filipino
people.
The succeeding years of Philippine basketball saw the
emergence of newer and fresher basketball talents from the likes
of Ricardo Brown, Ato Agustin, Allan Caidic, Benjie Paras,
and Hector Calma to the later generations of Danny Seigle,
Danny Ildefonso, Kenneth Duremdes, Asi Taulava and
Mark Caguioa.
1948: Philippine became the first basketball team to score at
least 100 points in Olympic competitions, outclassing tray
102-30.
Philippines finished third in the 1954 FIBA World Champions
courtesy of Mumar and Loyzaga (DYNAMIC DUO) also led
the Philippines to several Asian Games gold medals during the
decade.
1950’s: Philippines unleashed the legendary tandem of Lauro
Mumar and Carlos Loyzaga resulting into neck-to-neck
battle against basketball some of the top powerhouse teams of
the world including the US and the Soviet Union.
Similarly, the collegiate leagues the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) and thee University Athletic
Association of the Philippines were established in 1924 and
1938 respectively.

Collegiate and Universities also started to embrace the sport of
basketball, incorporating the sport in their physical education
curriculum.
Philippines also participated in the first ever Olympic Basketball
Tournament, finishing with a 4-1 win-loss record.
Philippines won against Italy, Estonia, Mexico and Uruguay
but failed to upset the eventual champion Team USA.
FAR EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES
First Far Eastern Championship Games was held in the Carnival
Grounds (now Rizal Memorial Spores Complex) in Malate,
Manila, Philippines on February 4, 1913.
192: ES Brown, president of the Philippine Athletic
Association and Manila Carnival Game proposed the creation
of the “Far Eastern Olympic Games” to China and Japan.
