Welcome today’s discussion is “MUM is the WORD” where we will discuss the 3D Web Round Tables and the kickstarter concept for the Metaverse Universal Marketplace or MUM.
Today’s Presenters are: David Fliesen - Chair of the 3D Web Round Table with extensive experience in virtual worlds and education. He is a Master Training Specialist and taught journalism and broadcasting for the U.S. military at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) and recently developed a college undergrad course on engineering virtual worlds. He is currently a student at the Art Institute with a major in Media Arts & Animation.Theresa Kinney-Johnson - Sim and Scene Designer in collaboration with AirisApps, LLC with extensive experience in multiple virtual worlds and game platforms. Being a nanny to three elementary students has created a passion for educating today's youth with experiential learning.
The 3D Web Round Table is developing the MUM Kickstarter to raise funds to develop a web-based universal marketplace with a secure universal asset delivery system to simultaneously deliver items to multiple virtual worlds. MUM will move content storage from a single in-world grid model to an architecture where items are stored on the Internet for secure cross-grid transfer. This grid-agnostic approach will include an API/SDK to allow developers to create dynamic expansions on its functionality.
The 3D Web Round Table (3DWRT) was started in early 2013 by a number of Metaverse stakeholders with a think tank to help shape the future of this technology and to help such applications become more mainstream in business, education, social networking, and entertainment industries. The 3DWRT focus is grid-agnostic rather than focused on any one particular technology as they look to further development of the Metaverse as a whole. Monthly roundtable meetings have provided a venue across several virtual worlds to reach out collaboratively to different communities and grow this important discussion topic. The roundtable in May 2013 in Second Life included a brainstorming session, which led to many ideas for kickstarter concepts. The following is the path outlined for development: PollDaddy vote on Top 10 Kickstarter Concepts, which closes at 9 pm SLT on 12 May 2013 Kickstarter Shaping Meeting on 19 May 2013 at 11 am SLT at the IEEE 2 sim in Second Life Kickstarter Crowd Source Funding with submission of one to three ideas Social Marketing to interested investors
The Top 10 List: Best ideas generated from the 3D Web Round TablesE-Metaverse Marketplace (26 votes): Develop a secure universal asset delivery system to expand the 3D Web as an industry to reach a larger user base with a web-based market that can simultaneously deliver items to multiple virtual worlds. This would move content storage from a single in-world grid model to one where items are stored on the Internet for secure cross-grid/sim transfer without the need for the avatar to carry an inventory with them. Avatars and content would be standardized for ALL grids and NOT coupled to a specific grid but to a global avatar. It would provide API/SDK to allow developers to plug into the system to create dynamic expansions on its functionality. Metacademy (20 votes): Inspired by Khan Academy, this would provide virtual gamification tools for "brain games" with game-based after school learning for K-12 students to learn with fun and interactive games. Some examples might include: Math Labyrinth, Math Board Games, Words With Kids, Raven's Quest - discover the mind behind the madness of Egar Allen Poe, Etc. Standardization (19 votes):Develop Virtual Worlds Standards for future widespread adoption of 3D virtual worlds. This could include things like Universal Avatars, Security-rich Transactions, Platform stability, Integration with existing Web and business processes, and open standards for interoperability with the current Web while encouraging adoption alongside proprietary and virtual world specific implementations. Federated elements to allow for multiple levels of facility and capability, but with a core that is the same avatar identity.Mobile Viewer (15 votes):Develop a mobile app viewer for device access to multiple virtual worlds that is quick and friendly for use in business, academics, and leisure.Suitcase (8 votes): Develop a basic transportable "suitcase" or "trunk" of portable items to move with you across the Metaverse between different virtual worlds. Virtual Converter (4 votes): Develop a web-based software-as-a-service tool to easily convert in-world content (prims or sculpts) from Second Life and OpenSim into mesh with identity verification to protect IP rights. Library Archival (2 votes): Develop an archival backup capability for storing away a portion of your inventory that you do not currently need, but may need to access later. Much like in real life when you change seasons, you may swap out the clothing in your closet from winter and move your spring wardrobe into the closet. This could also be of great value when content developers want to backup their projects to IARs (Inventory Archives) or some other archives. Identity Management (2 votes):Persistence of identity to me is the key with Federated Identity Management.Virtualista (1 vote): Inspired by the popular fashion fan site Polyvore.com, this focuses on socializing the virtual shopping experience by providing residents with an app easy web tool for customize designing their avatars (skin, shape, hair, and clothing) using clothing blanks for modularly adding fabrics, sculpts, and mesh. This would provide options to socially model clothing for friends to see and comment about over social networks and for use in multiple virtual worlds. This is a virtual gamification of the fashionista'sdiaroma with "social shopping" that could appeal to a wide range of residents. Metaverse Mentor (1 vote): Develop a game or learning tool that would teach virtual world skills like 3D modeling or texturing. This could be inspired by things like KhanAcademy.com and CodeAcademy.com.

MUM: Easy-to-Use Social ShoppingEase of Use for both Users & CreatorsIP EmpowermentVirtual Essence & Physical Essence: Idea for “Virtual Essence” in which an avatar’s basic key aspects (shape, skin, hair, eyes, makeup, tattoos) would be recorded as a saved state of their avatar. This would be similar to how you save an outfit and could be updated to a new single state at any time to provide your latest essence. We also talked about things that residents might want to do: like rolling back to an earlier essence or sharing/blending essences from their friends. This would take some standards implementation over time for implemenation. One project that was done in this area is Open Avatar. The IEEE is currently working on standards for virtual worlds. And maybe we could even extend this past the virtual…to a “Physical Essence” in the real world. Setup 360 photo booths at the beaches in key locations in Florida, California, Europe, and other key locations where college students take summer breaks. They could have a body scan done that would save their physical essence for use when shopping for RL clothing.Socializing the Shopping ExperienceParallel Real Life SalesIncentivizing Virtual World Standards by making it profitable to use them
MUM: Moving ForwardPath to Crowd FundingDefine the MUM Project - The Metaverse Universal Marketplace (MUM) project looks to change the way we shop for virtual and real life goods. By broadening the marketplace to reach a multitude of virtual worlds and games, we’ll provide opportunity for goods to be sold in a standardized way to multiple worlds and link sales & discounts for cross reality purchasing. Standards between environments can usher in greater profits for content creators. We also intend to make content upload easier for the creatives and provide protection from IP theft.Create Pledge Rewards - Coupons for free deals or plus-up deals, which would be negotiated between MUM and some of the best content creators. In exchange, MUM would provide a more front page (above the fold) advertisement for them. We could also migrate this over time into a “MUMs the Word” section where you get a free item each week. This might be similar to how the Apple Store is now offering limited time free downloads in a space that people will watch for the latest: http://on.mash.to/1ehaqiV or a bit like how Starbucks gives out cards for free songs and games. Set the Goal of MUM - The goal of MUM is to provide a secure universal asset delivery system with a web-based marketplace that can simultaneously deliver items to multiple virtual worlds and game environments to extend the sales reach for content creators by using standards for virtual goods.Make our MUM VideoBuild our MUM ProjectPromote our MUM ProjectMUM Project UpdatesMUM Rewards Fulfillment
