1. October 14, 2011
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Welcome to Fall in New England! Summer seemed to pass in a
flash and now we can look forward to the challenges of another
winter season. I wanted to take a moment to say “thank you” to
everyone who traveled to Halifax and participated in ERAPPA
2011, and a special note of thanks to those who represented our
chapter on committees and board positions.
The “Supervisor’s Toolkit” training that we had planned to hold
later this month was cancelled due to an insufficient number of
attendees to make the session feasible. I hope that at some
future time we can again offer this training
Looking ahead, our fall meeting is scheduled for November 17th at
the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. We have a couple
of great educational sessions and tours planned for that meeting.
Details about the day’s events are included with this communi-
cation, and also available at www.erappa.org/SNEAPPA.
I look forward to seeing you on November 17th at Holy Cross.
Sincerely,
John Michalewicz
SNEAPPA President

John Cannon, Associate Director for Operations and Planning in Physical
Plant at the College of the Holy Cross, recently published an article
“Exceeding Expectations” in APPA’s Facilities Manager magazine. John
will preside over an interactive discussion to explore how expectations
present a challenge for all of us and how they can be managed with
simple techniques once recognized.
10:15a – 10:45a Networking
10:45a to 12:00p Session #2 -- Providing Accommodations in Facilities: Is there a
Reasonable Standard? (Mary Feeney, Bowditch & Dewey, Worcester,
MA) In providing accommodations to students with disabilities, the
determination of what is "reasonable" requires a case-by-case, fact-
specific analysis. This presentation will explore how the law and
regulations, the regulating agencies, and advocacy groups have applied
that standard. We will also discuss some recognized alternatives to
requests for accommodations and when alternative accommodations
are appropriate if the initial request is deemed to impose an "undue
burden" on the institution.
Please plan to bring your individual questions so we can have a great discussion.

Facilities Tour Descriptions
Tour #1 -- Integrated Science Complex
With the design and construction of a new $64 million LEED
certified gold science complex, Holy Cross completed the most
ambitious building project in its history. The construction of a
new four-story building linked to the existing science and
social science buildings (Beaven, O’Neil, and Swords halls) in
2009 was followed by the complete renovation of Haberlin
Hall in 2010 and resulted in 142,000 gross square feet of new
and renovated classroom, lecture, research and laboratory
space. The new complex links the departments of biology,
chemistry, mathematics/computer science, physics,
psychology, and sociology/anthropology; and thus integrates
classrooms, labs, private offices, and lecture halls across
disciplines. The new teaching labs in chemistry and physics
allow students to be fully engaged in the scientific process.
From their first science course at Holy Cross to their most
sophisticated senior research projects, students work in labs
that are specially designed to encourage hands-on, discovery-
based exploration.
Tour #2 -- Figge Hall
On the inside loop of McCarthy Lane, near
the Hart Recreation Center and the Hogan
Campus Center, sits the recently comple-
ted $19.2 million Figge Hall, a 156-bed
townhouse-style residence hall.
Reflecting the current trends in student
housing, each of the 39 units accommo-
dates four students and features a
common area, kitchen, two bathrooms
and two bedrooms. The kitchen includes a
full-size refrigerator, range, microwave
and dishwasher. Each floor has a study
room, and the main floor features a function room that is used to host social gatherings.
Similar to Williams Hall, the other apartment-style residence on campus, the two-wing building features
floor-to-ceiling windows in the front and back of the main entrance area, giving the building an airy and
bright aura.
