1. Cite communication situations (you may cite cultural artifacts, material embodiment to
concretize your answer) in which:
● Reality is produced.
The communication situation that I think reality is produced is when the media
shows the situation of people in the Philippines right now and how slow the government
respond on crisis today or the COVID-19. Media also shows how numbers of cases really
rise day by day, number of deaths because of the virus and many people experiencing
hunger due to loss of job. With this kind of content we watch or read in different media
platforms, we realize how long we experiencing this kind of life. It hard for us to back in
our normal life, walk on the street without the need of face mask and face shield, interact
with people without social distance and also go back to school, have a healthy learning
environment again. The action of the government really affect its people. Because of this
situation that media shown, we tend to see and produced the reality how government act
like a turtle or slow in COVID-19 response and how we suffers because of it.
● Reality is maintained.
The communication situation that I think reality is maintained when people still
appreciates the beauty and uniqueness of the Philippines. Digital media takes a big role
in helping to maintain the reality in Philippines tourism and culture. With the help of media
entertainments, we watch different documentaries and news about Philippine culture and
tourism. In social media like YouTube, vloggers showcasing different tourist spots in the
Philippines through their travel vlogs. In Facebook, we see different government or non-
government organizations pages promoting the culture and tourism of our country. With
this different platforms, we have opportunity to see the beauty of the Philippines, most of
us have same reactions and insights about the Philippine tourism and culture in different
digital media platform. This shows that the reality is maintained which is “It’s More Fun in
the Philippines” or the Philippines is beautiful.
● Reality is repaired.
The communication situation that I think reality is repaired is when media helps the
cultural heritage rise again in different aspects. Most of the Filipinos nowadays have
forgotten our culture, due to the development of new technologies; people of today are
too much dependent on it, that’s why they weren’t able to take a look back on their cultures
and traditions. Like Larong Pinoy which is popular during “Baby boomers and Generation
X’’. Unlike now at the year of Millennial, they are embracing the high-tech gadgets,
computer, etc. Even the digital media is one of the factor of why Filipinos forgotten our
culture, it is also one of the way to help repair the reality of cultural heritage here in our
country. By creating documentaries that shows Philippines cultural heritage, promoting
artifacts or any material culture in social media and also by spreading news about culture.
In this case, we saw how media really takes a big role in repairing the reality.

● Reality is transformed.
The communication situation that I think reality is transformed is when women slowly
getting equal opportunity to society or gender equality. Before, the only job of the women is to
take care of her children, serve her husband or stay in the house help her mother in household.
It is very evident before that there is gender inequality in all levels. Women has no chance to
contribute to political level because most of the leaders before are men. They also have no
opportunity in social and cultural development of a certain community. Women also live in fear of
harassment, violence and discrimination. But as time goes by, women slowly achieving their goal
on having place on society with equal treatment and opportunities. Digital media takes a big role
in women empowerment and gender equality, by showing different news about the achievement
of women in different fields and also beauty pageants that aired in televisions with different
platforms really help women to show their place in the community. Social media also one of the
platform that really help the women to amplify their voices with the help of different organizations
that promotes women empowerment and gender equality. Generally, we can see how reality
being transformed with this kind of issue because its shows how different women from then to
now.
2. Discuss your realizations on the difference between viewing communications through
the culture approach.
I have so many realizations on the difference between viewing communications
through culture approach, one of these is about its influences and it focuses not only in
individual but the influences of communication in society. In this case, communication in
cultural approach really differs in communication that we know in oral communication and
context. In my knowledge about communication it talks about the transmission of
messages through different channels with sender and receiver but in cultural approach it
all about its influences in society and what role of communication plays in our culture. My
second realization and learning is, the cultural approach draws person together in
fellowship and commonality for a shared understanding because this approach is all about
connectedness among people not just transmission of messages for purpose of control.
The third one is, we construct and produce the messages the way we wanted whether the
way we think, view our lives, behave or even the way something on something.
All in all, I realize how cultural approach on communications differs on a
transmitted communication between sender and receiver. Yes, transmitted
communication connects people but we have second thought in terms on how the receiver
will interpret the message but in cultural approach connects “more” not only two people or
individuals but also the society through shared understanding and communication with
one another. This realizations made me understand more about communication not just
its difference but also its role in society’s culture.
