or Yahoo

plagiarism

3. Objectives
• Provide information and resources needed
to effectively conduct academic research
• Understand different searching techniques
and learn to navigate the online databases
• Teach how to critically search for articles
and evaluate them for content
• Importance of citing correctly and use of
citation tools
4. Definition and
Consequences
of Plagiarism
ACCORDING TO THE MERRIAM-WEBSTER
ONLINE DICTIONARY, TO "PLAGIARIZE"
MEANS:
• To commit literary theft
According to the Tuskegee University
Academic Regulations and Procedures for
Undergraduates, pg. 26
“Dishonesty, such as cheating, plagiarism, or
knowingly furnishing false information to
officials of the University will not be tolerated.
The penalty could include failure in the
course and possible dismissal or suspension
from the University.”
5. Ways to Avoid
Plagiarism
• Do not wait until the last minute
• Use technology tools to help you
• Google, Bixby, Alexa, Siri, etc. to
set up appointments
• Cite the information correctly
• When in doubt, cite the information
7. What is
Synesthesia?
• Synesthesia - It denotes the rare
capacity to hear colors, taste shapes, or
experience other equally strange sensory
fusions whose quality seems difficult for
the rest of us to imagine.
• For example, my voice would be not just
something that is heard, but also felt,
seen, or tasted. A synesthete might
describe music whose sound looks like
‘‘shards of glass,’’ a [flashing] of jagged,
colored triangles moving in the visual
field. Or, seeing the color red, a
synesthete might also per- ceive the
‘‘scent’’ of red.
8. Research
Question???
The research question can evolve from one idea:
• What are the daily ramifications of
Synesthesia on the quality of life of those
who are diagnosed with it.
• How does Synesthesia affect the quality of
life of those diagnosed with it and how does
affect their relationships with the world
around them
Keep asking questions
• How does Synesthesia affect them and how
they interact with the world?
• What types of adjustments must they make in
order to adapt to the world around them?
9. The Research
Question (Con’t)
Refining the Original Idea:
• How does Synesthesia impact their
relationship with others
The idea may not be perfect but as you
ponder over your question and start
looking through research, you will be
able to refine your question(s)
Refining the Original Idea:
• How does synesthesia impact their
quality of life (to include social
interaction, relational, and
understanding or perceive the world
around them)?
10. • Basic and Advanced Search
• Quotation Marks
• “Perceptions of Synesthesia”
• Boolean Operators – (AND, OR, & NOT)
• Can use quotation marks or parentheses
• AND
• “Perceptions of Synesthesia” AND “Hearing Colors ”
• OR
• “Hearing Colors” OR “Tasting Shapes”
• NOT
• “Perceptions of Synesthesia” NOT “Enhanced Sensory Perception”
How to Search the Databases
11. The Trifecta of the
Journal Article
1. Read the Abstract
2. Scroll down to the
Conclusion
3. Review the “Bibliography,”
“Reference,” or “Work Cited”

Information
• Why should you cite
• Where to find citation information
• How to navigate the OWL site
• Utilizing LibGuides for citing
