2. Social Network Analysis:
#CICLOFAIXAPAULISTA
On june 28, 2015, the City of São Paulo promoted the opening of the first bike
lane located at Avenida Paulista.
Starting in the political field and going to social media, its implementation has
become the subject of heated debate, intensified by pro and against activists.
This presentation shows the results of analyzes of their impact on Twitter and
Facebook.
3. In September 2014, the debate on the implementation of bike lanes on
main avenues of São Paulo heats the political field.
Government efforts for and against a causa have repercussions on
social media and generate interest in the topic. During 2015, the interest
in the subject, according to Google Trends, has again increased.
5. METHODOLOGY
Four collections were made on Twitter on 26, 27, 28 and 29 June with the search query
on ((ciclovia OR ciclofaixa) AND lang:pt), to collect only mentions in Portuguese.
The analysis was focused on the following metrics:
Indegree: to identify the key influencers of the subject;
Modularity: to identify the networks of supporters and critics of the inauguration of the
bike path.
The database of all days was analyzed on a single graph.
6. REPERCUSSION ON TWITTER
12.500
tweets
On the eve of its opening, the number of occurrences related to #CICLOFAIXAPAULISTA
recorded an increase in Twitter. Only on 27 and 28 June were at least 12,500 occurrences.
7. 4 crawling days
2.586 users envolved
26.734 tweets
Force Atlas 2 modeling was applied, to
set us more closer affinity.
With application of statistics modularity,
are seen five main clusters.
The diameter of the nodes displayed is
proportional to the amount of the
interactions involved.
8. In this graph, you can see that much of the
discussion took 2 different ways:
1 – on the periphery, consisting of profiles of
people who talked about it individually
without creating relationship (mention or
reply to other profiles).
2 – in the center, consisting of profiles of
people who took part in the interactive
discussion, generating relationship with other
profiles (mentions and RTs)
Mentions 72%
Tweet 23%

9. INDEGREE – FINDING INFLUENCERS
It was applied to indegree node metric
that identified the opinion leaders to this
topic:
- haddad_fernando
- danilogentili
- folha
- cartacapita
- estadao
- jornaloglobo
- G1
- cynaramenezes
Each influencer appears close to your
group influence, generating affinity
clusters.
10. CLUSTERS – GROUPS OF SUPPORT AND CRITICISM
CRITICISM
SUPORT
CRITICISM
11. • The cluster with a favorable trend in bike lane occupies the central portion of the
graph, so it is more interconnected, typical of an activist network.
• In this group there are also wider range of profiles with high indegree, so the ability
to influence is more distributed.
• The profile @haddad_fernando appears as the most influencing across the graph,
occupying a central position. The bike lane theme is strongly associated with him,
which indicates that the political gains in approval by the defender of the bike lane
group
• Political leaders do not appear in the opposition group. Two of the opposition
clusters with more users are guided by a mocking speech.
TWITTER NETWORK- CONCLUSIONS
13. METHODOLOGY
Were collected posts and users involved in 17 pages of Facebook, considered
the most important in Brazil on cycling / cycle activism themes. It was also
considered a page of the São Paulo City Hall.
All the databases of 18 pages were analyzed in a single graph.
Period: from June 22 to June 29. – Period in which there was a higher frequency of
publishing content of the subject in question in the analyzed pages.
Objective: analyzing potential formed groups, the importance of each page /
movement on the network, the dissemination of content, the quantity and the
relevance of the actors and the types of content involved.
14. TÍTULO 17 pages
186 posts
35.183 users envolved
48.548 interactions
Force Atlas 2 modeling was applied, with
strong gravity option, to set nodes that have
greater affinity so that they are next to each
other.
With application of modularity statistics,
there have been four main-clusters.
The diameter of the nodes is proportional
to the amount of the interactions involved.
15. SP City Hall “Movimento
Conviva”
“Vá de Bike”
Small clusters in the
periphery with several
activism pages.
CLUSTERS
16. The Facebook page “Vá de Bike”
results in the formation of the densest
cluster in pink.
The denser network indicates high
interconnection between posts and
people.
There are some nodes with average
diameter, indicating more interactions.
Some of those nodes are close to the
center of the dense network (pink + dark
blue). With this modeling, it indicates that
the contents of this page can engage
users from different pages.
NETWORK ANALYSIS
17. The pages of SP City Hall and the
Movimento Conviva published the
three posts with the highest volume of
interactions, but are on the periphery of
activism network.
There are few connections between
green cluster, the Movimento Conviva,
and the densest network.
Several pages form a dense network
of activism: “Bike Tour SP”, “Blog do
Ciclista”, “Ir e Vir de Bike”, in addition
to the “Vá de Bike” mentioned before.
NETWORK ANALYSIS
18. BETWEENNESS
In the graph on the side, we apply the
statistical of betweenness, which
measures the diameter of the nodes
according to their ability to connect
different groups of users.
Besides the three major nodes,
representing the posts that received more
interactions, it is possible to detect
multiple nodes in pink, some in the center
and others in the periphery in the graph,
with higher intermediation capacity. Most
are posts of the page "Vá de Bike".
19. The content that appears in the center of
the most dense network of activism, with
greater betweenness, has two main
variations:
Celebration/affirmation:
#vaiterciclofaixa.
Contestation/argumentation: images
and videos with arguments to defend the
existence of demand for bike lane in São
Paulo.
BETWEENNESS
20. FACEBOOK NETWORK - CONCLUSIONS
• Cycloativism pages form a more interconnected network, especially the network of the
page "Vá de Bike";
• Unlike what happened on Twitter, the Facebook profile that represents the city of São
Paulo does not occupy a central position in the network. One hypothesis is that the
bike lane issue appears more related to the figure of Fernando Haddad than the
municipal government.
• It was not possible to identify an opposition group on the selected pages.
