Introduction
Salient Systems, Inc. has been in business
since 1984 and is the world’s predominant
supplier of Wheel Impact Load Detectors
(WILD). More than 250 systems have
been installed worldwide.
WILD and Hunting Truck Detector data
provided to the Association of American
Railroads (AAR) InteRRIS Database is
exclusively generated by Salient detectors
for rail industry interchange billing and
R&D purposes. Additionally, the current
wheel replacement and / or repair
interchange rules as established by the
AAR are based exclusively on the
accurate measurement information
(approximately 2% static calibration and
1% dynamic calibration) provided by
Salient detectors.
Due to system modularity, WILD detectors
provide a platform for the addition of
Hunting Truck Detection (HTD) and Weigh
In Motion (WIM), which also provides
overload imbalance detection. These
additional modules are extremely cost
effective when building on the hardware
and infrastructure that a Salient WILD
provides.

Wheel Impact Load Detector System Hardware
One standard single-track system configuration (US Patent No. 4,701,866) is detailed
below. The system includes one Wheel Impact Load Detector (utilizing Salient SiteMaster
software) with thirty-two vertical wheel load circuits and AEI tag reading system. HTD and
WIM are optional add-ons to the WILD. The Wheel Data Management System (WDMS) is
an optional server platform provided by Salient in virtual format.

HUNTING TRUCK DETECTOR (HTD)
This optional addition to the WILD is used
to detect oscillation on tangent track
which can induce excessive lateral
forces that significantly contribute to
wear of the wheel and track. This
detection feature adds an additional 16

WDMS System Overview and Functionality
The Wheel Data Management System
(WDMS) accepts data provided by the
Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD),
archives data for later retrieval and
viewing, and generates alarms for
vehicles with wheel impacts. WDMS
alarms may be transferred via e-mail,
FTP over the Internet or private intranet.
Impact alarms are generated based on a
set of customer-defined thresholds with
the assistance of Salient Engineering.
WDMS currently supports multiple Wheel
Impact Load Detectors, Overload and
Imbalance load detectors and Hunting
Truck Detectors manufactured by Salient
Systems, Inc.
The system is built around the high-
availability hardware solutions that
include fault tolerant disk drives and
industrial power supplies. The software
solutions chosen for WDMS were driven
by their reputation for robustness and
high-availability. The operating system is
Linux and the database is a fully
relational, ACID compliant version of
MySQL. The system is written almost
entirely in Java and uses many Java
technologies.
