Lung cancer arises from mutations in lung cells that cause abnormal and uncontrolled growth. It is the leading cause of cancer death in men and second leading in women. Tobacco use causes almost 90% of lung cancer cases. Secondhand smoke exposure can also lead to lung cancer in non-smokers. The symptoms of lung cancer are often not apparent until it has spread. Air pollution and chemicals used in homes are additional risk factors for developing lung cancer.
