Band images gathered
1. Band Images Gathered
This image of ‘my chemical romance’ meets the conventions of a rock band due to the costume that
they are wearing by wearing the same clothes to represent the band as united. Their costumes are black
and gold to represent rebellion and darkness which creates the type of aura of the music and meets the
conventions of their music genre which is rock. For example, the colour black represents death and dull.
Although this colour is very negative, the audiences would feel tensed which would make this exciting.
The band is stood beside each other creating proxemics and symmetry between the lead singer and the
rest of the band standing in front of the black background which the wide shot entirely wants to focus
and brings unity to the band. The image is done in landscape for the band to all fit in and focus on the
costume and facial expression to create the imprisonment of the band. The image has used Gutternberg
design principle and rule of thirds where we would identify their faces as the primary optical area and
the black costumes around the terminal area. The band is directly looking towards the camera to
establish a relationship between the audiences and fans. By having their expression looking straight and
serious, this creates the brand recognition of their band and fits in with the music genre. The main
audience of their music would be mainly male audiences as their looks can relate to them.
2. This image of ‘Rihanna’ meets the conventions of a pop and RnB music from the mise en scene with the
use of her red hair and makeup. This image is a close-up shot of her face looking down to make her look
seductive with her long eyelashes and her lips. As this image is mainly in red, this represents her music
as it includes love and promiscuity of her pop songs. As an artist, it meets the conventions of the
audiences as it shows that she is very feminine and the main audiences would be girls and women. I
don’t think this image has used the Gutternberg and rule of thirds design as the image looks very tight
and crowded fitting only her face which makes this image stand out as its very different from other
different image especially this image used as her album cover. The red colour is around her which brings
closeness towards the audiences. At the left side we can see a shadow to suggest how enigmatic she is
and again relates to the audiences as women are more secretive. As this image is manipulated, this is
has used high key lighting by defining her skin creating a slightly high contrast and sepia edit.
This image of ‘Lana Del Rey’ meets the conventions of a pop and indie pop music. In this image shows a
medium close-up shot with her face slanted with her hands touching her cheeks to make her look soft
and gentle. Her music is majorly into politics and world especially where we can see this in one of her
music video ‘video games’ where this meets the grand narratives. This image shows her femininity with
her volume and thick eyelashes to make her costume look like it was set during the 1960’s or 70’s. As
well as the image manipulated in black and white creates the displace of time and space and using high
key lighting where the light reflects on her face and clothes creating a contrast in the middle between.
This image has used the Guttenberg principle and the rule of thirds as at the optical primary area where
we would see her gentle face and at the terminal area where we would identify her clothes. Although
the image is black and white, we find her hair to look glossy that goes well with the lighting of her face.
In contrast to the background, is very grey on the left and is a darker shade on the right side. I think the
main audience of her music would be from females from 18 and above where she wants to reach a
mainstream audience, as well as having her music videos set at 1960/70’s with the use of vintage mise
en scenes I think she wants to reach these audiences especially people from age 18.
3. This image of ‘Florence and the Machine’ meets the conventions of an indie pop, rock and soul. In this
image it shows a medium shot where we see her face tilted sideways and her eyes closed where we see
the side shape of her face and her long ‘natural look’ eyelashes. Her costume is based on green and red
colour in contrast with the paleness of her skin and black nails make her look like the ‘poison ivy’
feminine character. With her makeup is very blue and pink which can be based on the colour of flowers
evidently at the background. Her hands seems to touch one of her shoulder and the other hand about to
touch her face, with her face on the side makes this look like she’s lying down although the background
is manipulated. The background goes together with her costume where she is in a garden that has
blossomed flowers. The image has not used Guttenberg design and rule of thirds as it tends to focus
more in the middle instead of the primary optical area and the terminal area is also the main focus
where this should be the weak spot of a photo. This image is manipulated where the sides of the
background are slightly darker in contrast to the middle where her pale skin makes the image look
attractive.
4. This is an Image of the band called ‘Oasis’ that meets the conventions of a rock band. Most of the music
videos they produce creates a pastiche on other legend rock bands such as The Beatles where in one of
their music video ‘supersonic’ uses similar costumes and location as them and the band of ‘The Venue’
where in one of the vocalist in oasis has a similar voice. This image uses a low angle mid shot of the band
where the image is makes it look like the band to have bigger bodies than usual. The image also uses
Gutternberg design and rule of thirds principle where at the primary optical area it focuses on their
faces whereas at the terminal area it focuses on their bodies. The image also uses proxemics where the
main vocalist stands at the front whereas the rest of the band is slightly behind him especially one of
them at the very back where we hardly see much of his body. Their costumes are very plain to what the
society wears today and doesn’t look like they are in a band. In contrast, the background has a blue-grey
colour where this goes well with their denim and casual costume. This image is also slightly manipulated
where their faces are made to look better and clear.
This is an image of a famous singer called ‘Beyonce’ where she meets the conventions of Rnb, pop and
ballad. This image has used a close-up shot of Beyoncé where her costume below is cut entirely focusing
on her face. This image has used the Gutternberg design and the rule of thirds where at the primary
optical area it focuses on her face and the terminal area focuses below where we can slightly see her
yellow costume. This image shows a manipulated image that looks almost real from an unedited image.
We can slightly tell this as her skin is made brighter to make her skin look more glowing and as well as
her face. Her costume has the ‘summer’ type where the colours used are yellow, red and bronze.
Especially the colour ‘red’ stands out from all the colours, the red flower supports the red lipstick that
she is wearing. Also, the colour bronze of her skin again has the ‘summer’ look that makes her bracelet
not look as tacky as she looks natural and simple. Also the way the camera is positioned to be on the
side where we can see her shadow behind the aqua blue background almost reminding the spectators of
a pool or the sea in a beach. Also the way Beyoncé’s arms are positioned makes her look like a model
rather than a signer.
5. This is an image of a popular Rnb and pop singer called ‘Alicia Keys’ who produces her own music and
meets the conventions of that music genre. This image has used a medium shot of Alicia and has made
her body faced sideways and her face towards the camera to keep interacting with the audiences. She
could have been positioned sideways to show her sexy figure. The image has used the Gutternberg
design principle and the rule of thirds where at the primary optical area we identify her face and at the
terminal area we would lastly see her body. The photographer may have done this to balance the shot
and for us audiences to easily recognize the person in the image. This image is manipulated by using
pale and sepia effects where her skin is emphasized. Alicia’s costume also meets the conventions of an
Rnb and pop singer where her clothes is cropped and very sparkly. Her skin is glowing in this picture
especially her face where the light focuses more on. The position of her hand is made to touch her hair
which brings the desired look for woman. We can see that the background is very dull and gray but in
contrast to this, Alicia brings the light to this picture where her clothes is very sparkly and wearing red
trousers makes this attractive.
