Personal Qualities
Self-Motivation: An effective manager can’t motivate others if he or she can’t self-
motivate. Self-motivation, the ability to get yourself going, and take charge of what’s next
for you, is a vital personal characteristic for a manager. You have to keep yourself going —
and motivate those who work with you.
Integrity: People trust a good manager because they know he or she has personal integrity.
Workers need to know that you will fight for them, do what you say, and follow the rules.
Dependability/Reliability: As a person, you should be dependable and reliable. Your
superiors, as well as your subordinates, need to know that you can be counted on. Others
in the organization should be able to rely on you.
Optimism: Do you look to the future with hope? An optimistic attitude can help build
morale in your employees. Your positive attitude can inspire others, and help them feel
good about getting things done.
Confidence: Do you have confidence in yourself. You need to be able to make decisions in
confidence, and show others that you are capable of making good decisions. Your
confidence will rub off on others, and can be of benefit.
Calmness: As the manager, you can’t afford to break down when the pressure is on. The
ability to remain calm and do what needs to be done is essential in a good manager.
Flexibility: A certain amount of flexibility is needed by a manager, since he or she may need
to adapt to changing situations.
Industry Knowledge: What do you know about the industry you are in? It helps
understand your industry so that you can answer questions and perform your work
more effectively. Workers may not need industry knowledge, but a manager should
have some.
Know When to Delegate: An effective manager knows that some tasks need to
be delegated. You should be able to identify workers who will do well, and give them
tasks they can succeed at — while helping the project.
Organization: You need to be organized in order to be a good manager. Keep track of
projects, employees and assignments so that you are on top of what needs to happen
in the business.
Basic Money Management: Understand basic financial concepts so that you
understand how to manage money as part of a project you have been given.
Business Hierarchy: You should know how the hierarchy works at your business, and
follow the chain of command. Make sure that you understand your duties, and to
whom you report. You should also know how the organization affects your
subordinates.
Legal Implications: While you don’t need to be a law expert, you should have a grasp of
the legal implications of sexual harassment, proper hiring and firing practices,
confidentiality, and more.
Business Qualities
Written Communication: Learn how to communicate effectively in writing. A good
manager should be able to write professionally and with correct grammar,
expressing him or herself in email, memos, and thank you notes.
Public Speaking: As a good manager, you should know how to speak publicly,
annunciating your words, and concisely communicating your ideas, whether in an
interview, or addressing workers.
Constructive Feedback: Learn how to provide feedback in a way that is helpful to
workers and others.
Active Listening: One of the most important communication skills is listening. Make
sure you are listening to your workers, superiors and customers, and that you
acknowledge them.
Specific: When giving instructions, be specific in what you want, and in expected
outcomes. Make sure your employees understand what should happen.
Organize Your Presentations: Organize and practice your presentations before giving
them so that you are clear and concise, and so that your presentation flows well.
Communication Qualities
Customer Service: You might be surprised to discover the customer service is a
relationship quality. However, it is. You need to be able to build good relationships with
customers if you want to be a good manager. Learn how to relate to customers, and
see things from their perspective.
Mediator: Do you know how to make peace? Often, a good manager needs to be able
to act as a mediator between workers, between a worker and a client, or between a
superior and a worker. Brush up on your mediation qualities, and learn conflict
resolution techniques to be a good manager.
Team Player: Are you part of a team? You need to be able to function as part of a team
if you want to succeed as an effective manager. Make sure that you are willing to work
with others, and that you will hold up your end.
Respect: You need to be respectful of your workers if you are to have respect as a
manager in return. It’s up to you to set the example and build relationships of respect.
Collaboration: You’ll need to set up collaborations with others, and with your team.
You should also be able to work well with others, and understand how to integrate
ideas and personalities.
Value Others: A good manager helps employees feel valued. Surveys show
that employees want recognition from their superiors, and you need to make sure to
recognize contributions from your workers.

Roadmap to be an Effective Manager
An Effective Manager must be SMART
How to be an Effective Manager?
1) Delegate work wisely:
The key to effective management is to delegate
the work – you should assign responsibilities and tasks
to your employees. Most employers feel they have to
control every small thing their employees do, and this
can be disastrous at your position.
When you delegate work to your employees, you are
multiplying the quantity of work that can be
accomplished. Also, you are helping develop your
employees’ capabilities, leadership skills and
confidence.
2) Set achievable goals:
Every employee must have something to work for
and therefore it is the duty of a manager to set
goals that his subordinate will strive for. Not only
will these goals give the employees a new
purpose and direction, they will also ensure that
all employees are marching towards the larger
organizational goals.
So fix measurable goals and regularly monitor the
progress towards their accomplishment.
3) Communication is essential:
There are managers who do not understand
the importance of communication – this can
be bad for them as well as the organization. On
many occasions, managers have to serve as the
link between the top management and the
executive-level employees.
Whether you have news related to work or
whether it is an informal interaction, a
good manager always makes an effort to keep
his subordinates in the loop. Employees
must remain updated as to what has to be
done how in order to do their job efficiently
and on time.
4) Make time for your Team mates:
Management is mainly about making
people work. When an employee needs
to talk to you, you must make sure that
you make time to see him and step aside
for a discussion.
It is okay to put your work on the back-
burner for a moment and focus on
this person in need of your assistance.
ProcessBuildingTeam
5) Recognize achievements:
Every individual is hungry for appreciation. The
day you begin appreciating your team for their
efforts, you subordinates will be a happier lot.
All employees are, at some point or the other,
seeking praise for the work they do. However,
very few bosses understand this need and do
not do much to contribute towards recognizing
and rewarding them for a task done well.
Thus, if you want your employees to have job
satisfaction it is vital to give them a pat on
their backs. To be a good leader, you must
show your good qualities to the world and
inspire others.
You will have to be the change you wish to see
in others. So start behaving as you would want
your subordinates to behave at work. However,
do not forget in the process that your role and
position are different from the other
employees.
6) Come up with lasting solutions:
Managers must be effective problem solvers. No matter how huge a problem is,
there is always a solution to it.
The trouble with coming up with quick fixes is that in your enthusiasm to come up
with quick solutions and move on to another task, you may overlook another viable
option that may have taken longer to develop and apply but could have been a long-
lasting solution.
A good manager believes in dealing with the root cause of the problem, rather than
just superficially fixing it.
7) Stop playing the blame game:
It will always be someone’s fault. Fingers can be pointed
towards you. Not that you should start pointing fingers to
evade the situation! It is possible that you do not have a
stellar team, but that should not mean you should settle
for mediocrity in work. You must hold the power to
inspire employees so that they exceed all expectations.
You do possess the power to sack people who aren’t
doing what they were hired to do.
However, you can’t go on blaming everyone in the team
for one person’s failure to perform or your own failure to
lead.
8) Be Innovative on your work:
Effective manager should be innovative of his work.
Innovation helps to find better alternative solution.
A innovative person always able to find the new
opportunity . Innovative person always one step
forward for proper utilization of his resources,
manpower etc.
9) Build on people’s strengths:
A lot of managers target the weaknesses of
employees and talk about how to
improve them. You should distinguish yourself
by paying special attention to core areas
that represent the strength of your
subordinates. This will encourage them and
this is how you will receive your biggest return
on investment.
These guideline will help you to streamline your selves to prepare your mindset and
action plan will be more systematic .
It’s the willingness to be more effective rather than learn about effective.

Self-motivation, the ability to get yourself going, and take charge of what’s next for you, is a vital personal characteristic for a manager. You have to keep yourself going — and motivate those who work with you. Integrity: People trust a good manager because they know he or she has personal integrity. Workers need to know that you will fight for them, do what you say, and follow the rules. Dependability/Reliability: As a person, you should be dependable and reliable. Your superiors, as well as your subordinates, need to know that you can be counted on. Others in the organization should be able to rely on you. Optimism: Do you look to the future with hope? An optimistic attitude can help build morale in your employees. Your positive attitude can inspire others, and help them feel good about getting things done. Confidence: Do you have confidence in yourself. You need to be able to make decisions in confidence, and show others that you are capable of making good decisions. Your confidence will rub off on others, and can be of benefit. Calmness: As the manager, you can’t afford to break down when the pressure is on. The ability to remain calm and do what needs to be done is essential in a good manager. Flexibility: A certain amount of flexibility is needed by a manager, since he or she may need to adapt to changing situations.
  • 6. Industry Knowledge: What do you know about the industry you are in? It helps understand your industry so that you can answer questions and perform your work more effectively. Workers may not need industry knowledge, but a manager should have some. Know When to Delegate: An effective manager knows that some tasks need to be delegated. You should be able to identify workers who will do well, and give them tasks they can succeed at — while helping the project. Organization: You need to be organized in order to be a good manager. Keep track of projects, employees and assignments so that you are on top of what needs to happen in the business. Basic Money Management: Understand basic financial concepts so that you understand how to manage money as part of a project you have been given. Business Hierarchy: You should know how the hierarchy works at your business, and follow the chain of command. Make sure that you understand your duties, and to whom you report. You should also know how the organization affects your subordinates. Legal Implications: While you don’t need to be a law expert, you should have a grasp of the legal implications of sexual harassment, proper hiring and firing practices, confidentiality, and more. Brush up on your mediation qualities, and learn conflict resolution techniques to be a good manager. Team Player: Are you part of a team? You need to be able to function as part of a team if you want to succeed as an effective manager. Make sure that you are willing to work with others, and that you will hold up your end. Respect: You need to be respectful of your workers if you are to have respect as a manager in return. It’s up to you to set the example and build relationships of respect. • 9. Comparison of Average, Successful and Effective Manager
  • 11. Roadmap to be an Effective Manager An Effective Manager must be SMART
  • 12. How to be an Effective Manager? 1) Delegate work wisely: The key to effective management is to delegate the work – you should assign responsibilities and tasks to your employees. Most employers feel they have to control every small thing their employees do, and this can be disastrous at your position. When you delegate work to your employees, you are multiplying the quantity of work that can be accomplished. Also, you are helping develop your employees’ capabilities, leadership skills and confidence.
  • 13. 2) Set achievable goals: Every employee must have something to work for and therefore it is the duty of a manager to set goals that his subordinate will strive for. Not only will these goals give the employees a new purpose and direction, they will also ensure that all employees are marching towards the larger organizational goals. So fix measurable goals and regularly monitor the progress towards their accomplishment.
  • 14. 3) Communication is essential: There are managers who do not understand the importance of communication – this can be bad for them as well as the organization. On many occasions, managers have to serve as the link between the top management and the executive-level employees. Whether you have news related to work or whether it is an informal interaction, a good manager always makes an effort to keep his subordinates in the loop. Employees must remain updated as to what has to be done how in order to do their job efficiently and on time.
  • 15. 4) Make time for your Team mates: Management is mainly about making people work. When an employee needs to talk to you, you must make sure that you make time to see him and step aside for a discussion. It is okay to put your work on the back- burner for a moment and focus on this person in need of your assistance. ProcessBuildingTeam
  • 16. 5) Recognize achievements: Every individual is hungry for appreciation. The day you begin appreciating your team for their efforts, you subordinates will be a happier lot. All employees are, at some point or the other, seeking praise for the work they do. However, very few bosses understand this need and do not do much to contribute towards recognizing and rewarding them for a task done well. Thus, if you want your employees to have job satisfaction it is vital to give them a pat on their backs. To be a good leader, you must show your good qualities to the world and inspire others. You will have to be the change you wish to see in others. So start behaving as you would want your subordinates to behave at work. However, do not forget in the process that your role and position are different from the other employees.
  • 17. 6) Come up with lasting solutions: Managers must be effective problem solvers. No matter how huge a problem is, there is always a solution to it. The trouble with coming up with quick fixes is that in your enthusiasm to come up with quick solutions and move on to another task, you may overlook another viable option that may have taken longer to develop and apply but could have been a long- lasting solution. A good manager believes in dealing with the root cause of the problem, rather than just superficially fixing it. 7) Stop playing the blame game: It will always be someone’s fault. Fingers can be pointed towards you. Not that you should start pointing fingers to evade the situation! It is possible that you do not have a stellar team, but that should not mean you should settle for mediocrity in work. You must hold the power to inspire employees so that they exceed all expectations. You do possess the power to sack people who aren’t doing what they were hired to do. However, you can’t go on blaming everyone in the team for one person’s failure to perform or your own failure to lead.
  • 18. 8) Be Innovative on your work: Effective manager should be innovative of his work. Innovation helps to find better alternative solution. A innovative person always able to find the new opportunity . Innovative person always one step forward for proper utilization of his resources, manpower etc. 9) Build on people’s strengths: A lot of managers target the weaknesses of employees and talk about how to improve them. You should distinguish yourself by paying special attention to core areas that represent the strength of your subordinates. This will encourage them and this is how you will receive your biggest return on investment.
