Implementing A Socially Responsible Environmental Management System
SHEM 114 - Environmental Management (C202301)
Instructor : Ciarán McAleenan
Student : Juan J. Camilo
What needs to be done to achieve ISO 14001 certification ?
The impact of Industrial activities on the Environment is forcing the organizations to control their
activities, products, and services for mitigating the impact on the environment.
The ISO 14001 standard is primarily concerned with “environmental management.” This means that the
organization needs to:
1. Identify the harmful effects of their activities, on the environment, and plan to reduce the impact.
2. Achieve continual improvement in its environmental management system and environmental
performance.
The ISO 14001:2015 version is based on High-Level Structure (HLS)
structure having ten main requirements:
1. Scope
2. Normative
Reference
3. Terms and
Definitions
4. Context of the
Organization
5. Leadership 6. Planning 7. Support 8. Operation
9. Performance
Evaluation
10. Improvement
“ This standard requires the organization to identify improvement plans, use the
resources in efficient way, study their environment to reduce pollution, reuse, recycle
and effective management of wastes. “
Understanding ISO 14001:2015 Main requirements
• Outline the scope of the EMS. It should be consistent with an organisation’s environmental policy. The intended outcomes should aim to enhance your
environmental performance and fulfill compliance obligation
• The scope shall be documented.
• All activities, products and services of the organization within that scope need to be included
1. Scope
2. Normative Reference
• This section explains any relevant terms and definitions
3. Terms and Definitions
• This section requires Organizations to establish the internal and external issues that could affect their business or interested parties, and any compliance
regulations that needs to be met.
4. Context of the Organization
• This clause places accountability for implementing Environmental Management System on ‘top management’
• Clearly defined and understood responsibilities and authorities
• The top management shall establish an environmental policy
5. Leadership
• The organization shall identify environmental aspects of its products, process and services
• Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities and aaplicable compliance obligations
6. Planning
• This section address requirements on resources, communication and documentation.
• Organization requirements for competence, and awareness,
7. Support
• implementation of the processes that enable the organization to meet their environmental intended results, policies and objectives.
• plans to prepare and respond to emergency situations that might have adverse environmental impacts
8. Operation
• how you will monitor, measure, analyse and evaluate your environmental management system
9. Performance Evaluation
• commitment to continual improvement
• Addressing non-conformities in the EMS processes and any corrective actions
• Internal Audit Program
10. Improvement
What Needs To Be Done To Perform A Life Cycle Assessment According To Iso 14040?
Life cycle assessment (LCA) addresses the environmental aspects and potential environmental impacts
`from raw material acquisition through production, use, end-of-life treatment, recycling and final
disposal (i.e. cradle-to-grave).
There are four phases in a Life cycle Study:
a)The goal and scope
definition phase
b)The inventory
analysis phase
c)The impact
assessment phase
d)The interpretation
phase
The scope, including the system
boundary and level of detail.
It is an inventory of input/output
data regarding the system being
studied. It involves collection of
the data necessary to meet the
goals of the defined study
The purpose is to provide
additional information to help
assess a product system’s life
cycle inventory analysis phase
results so as to better understand
their environmental significance.
the results of a life cycle inventory
analysis or a life cycle impact
assessment, or both, are
summarized and discussed as a
basis for conclusions,
recommendations and decision-
making in accordance with the
goal and scope definition.
Business Case :
1. Agricultural production, which is basically composed of land leveling and preparation for cultivation.
2. Repair services workshop, we have an inventory of 1117 motor equipment which consume fuel and oil mainly Diesel fuel, and have a
preventive and corrective maintenance plan.
3.Industrial Process, this is where we process sugar cane into refined sugar, in this process we use steam boilers and self-produce electric
energy for our operations.
The work environment where I work is in an agricultural production company whose main product is sugar from sugar cane.
We are a company formed by 3200 employees where our processes are divided into 3 main work sections.
Scope :
The scope of this environmental management system includes the commitment of the sugar production company to minimize or eradicate
any environmental impact and includes compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a
product system throughout its life cycle.
The presentation of environmental impacts focuses on high-level information to keep the presentation of this paper brief.
The elements of analysis begin with the evaluation of the suppliers of expendable materials and services, and end with the disposal of the
waste produced by the operational activities.
Context of organization
The operations described take place in the Dominican Republic in the southern part of the country, an unpopulated and rural part where
the soils are saline.
The laws of the country require an environmental permit that must comply with the elements of Law 64-00 that establishes as a
prerequisite for the start of operations:
1. Environmental impact study: the company's activities and their possible impacts on air, water, social impact, fauna and land are
described.
2. Environmental impact remediation plan establishes how environmental impact factors will be controlled.
3. Environmental compliance report: A report with the measurements of environmental impacts is sent to the Ministry of the
Environment on a monthly basis to demonstrate compliance or action plans to correct any emission that is above what is established by
the country's law.
Leadership:
• We are a green company, we are committed to the
preservation of natural resources, our values go hand in hand
with sustainability, we have goals to reduce the use of water,
minimize carbon monoxide, Co2 and particulate emissions from
our industrial processes, recovery of arid land, non-use of
agrochemicals prohibited by the EPA and the reduction of fossil
fuel consumption (we produce our own electrical energy from a
steam turbine, the steam is generated with bagasse of
sugarcane).
• We are in the process of certifying our industrial processes
under the Bonsucro Standard to reduce the environmental and
social impacts of sugarcane production while recognizing the
need for economic viability.
• Reference standards : PAS2050:2008 – Specification for the
assessment of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods
and services, ISEALCode of Good Practice for Setting Social and
Environmental Standards, Bonsucro Certification Protocol,l
Bonsucro Calculator.

Implementing A Socially Responsible Environmental Management System.pptx

  • 1. Implementing A Socially Responsible Environmental Management System SHEM 114 - Environmental Management (C202301) Instructor : Ciarán McAleenan Student : Juan J. Camilo
  • 2. What needs to be done to achieve ISO 14001 certification ? The impact of Industrial activities on the Environment is forcing the organizations to control their activities, products, and services for mitigating the impact on the environment. The ISO 14001 standard is primarily concerned with “environmental management.” This means that the organization needs to: 1. Identify the harmful effects of their activities, on the environment, and plan to reduce the impact. 2. Achieve continual improvement in its environmental management system and environmental performance.
  • 3. The ISO 14001:2015 version is based on High-Level Structure (HLS) structure having ten main requirements: 1. Scope 2. Normative Reference 3. Terms and Definitions 4. Context of the Organization 5. Leadership 6. Planning 7. Support 8. Operation 9. Performance Evaluation 10. Improvement “ This standard requires the organization to identify improvement plans, use the resources in efficient way, study their environment to reduce pollution, reuse, recycle and effective management of wastes. “
  • 4. Understanding ISO 14001:2015 Main requirements • Outline the scope of the EMS. It should be consistent with an organisation’s environmental policy. The intended outcomes should aim to enhance your environmental performance and fulfill compliance obligation • The scope shall be documented. • All activities, products and services of the organization within that scope need to be included 1. Scope 2. Normative Reference • This section explains any relevant terms and definitions 3. Terms and Definitions • This section requires Organizations to establish the internal and external issues that could affect their business or interested parties, and any compliance regulations that needs to be met. 4. Context of the Organization • This clause places accountability for implementing Environmental Management System on ‘top management’ • Clearly defined and understood responsibilities and authorities • The top management shall establish an environmental policy 5. Leadership • The organization shall identify environmental aspects of its products, process and services • Actions to Address Risks and Opportunities and aaplicable compliance obligations 6. Planning • This section address requirements on resources, communication and documentation. • Organization requirements for competence, and awareness, 7. Support • implementation of the processes that enable the organization to meet their environmental intended results, policies and objectives. • plans to prepare and respond to emergency situations that might have adverse environmental impacts 8. Operation • how you will monitor, measure, analyse and evaluate your environmental management system 9. Performance Evaluation • commitment to continual improvement • Addressing non-conformities in the EMS processes and any corrective actions • Internal Audit Program 10. Improvement
  • 5. What Needs To Be Done To Perform A Life Cycle Assessment According To Iso 14040? Life cycle assessment (LCA) addresses the environmental aspects and potential environmental impacts `from raw material acquisition through production, use, end-of-life treatment, recycling and final disposal (i.e. cradle-to-grave). There are four phases in a Life cycle Study: a)The goal and scope definition phase b)The inventory analysis phase c)The impact assessment phase d)The interpretation phase The scope, including the system boundary and level of detail. It is an inventory of input/output data regarding the system being studied. It involves collection of the data necessary to meet the goals of the defined study The purpose is to provide additional information to help assess a product system’s life cycle inventory analysis phase results so as to better understand their environmental significance. the results of a life cycle inventory analysis or a life cycle impact assessment, or both, are summarized and discussed as a basis for conclusions, recommendations and decision- making in accordance with the goal and scope definition.
  • 6. Business Case : 1. Agricultural production, which is basically composed of land leveling and preparation for cultivation. 2. Repair services workshop, we have an inventory of 1117 motor equipment which consume fuel and oil mainly Diesel fuel, and have a preventive and corrective maintenance plan. 3.Industrial Process, this is where we process sugar cane into refined sugar, in this process we use steam boilers and self-produce electric energy for our operations. The work environment where I work is in an agricultural production company whose main product is sugar from sugar cane. We are a company formed by 3200 employees where our processes are divided into 3 main work sections.
  • 7. Scope : The scope of this environmental management system includes the commitment of the sugar production company to minimize or eradicate any environmental impact and includes compilation and evaluation of the inputs, outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle. The presentation of environmental impacts focuses on high-level information to keep the presentation of this paper brief. The elements of analysis begin with the evaluation of the suppliers of expendable materials and services, and end with the disposal of the waste produced by the operational activities. Context of organization The operations described take place in the Dominican Republic in the southern part of the country, an unpopulated and rural part where the soils are saline. The laws of the country require an environmental permit that must comply with the elements of Law 64-00 that establishes as a prerequisite for the start of operations: 1. Environmental impact study: the company's activities and their possible impacts on air, water, social impact, fauna and land are described. 2. Environmental impact remediation plan establishes how environmental impact factors will be controlled. 3. Environmental compliance report: A report with the measurements of environmental impacts is sent to the Ministry of the Environment on a monthly basis to demonstrate compliance or action plans to correct any emission that is above what is established by the country's law.
  • 8. Leadership: • We are a green company, we are committed to the preservation of natural resources, our values go hand in hand with sustainability, we have goals to reduce the use of water, minimize carbon monoxide, Co2 and particulate emissions from our industrial processes, recovery of arid land, non-use of agrochemicals prohibited by the EPA and the reduction of fossil fuel consumption (we produce our own electrical energy from a steam turbine, the steam is generated with bagasse of sugarcane). • We are in the process of certifying our industrial processes under the Bonsucro Standard to reduce the environmental and social impacts of sugarcane production while recognizing the need for economic viability. • Reference standards : PAS2050:2008 – Specification for the assessment of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services, ISEALCode of Good Practice for Setting Social and Environmental Standards, Bonsucro Certification Protocol,l Bonsucro Calculator.
