FOREWORD
«This ole house » a song in the ‘Negro Spiritual’ vein was made famous by
Shakin’ Stevens in 1981 thanks to his lively singing and dancing in the
manner of Elvis Presley. However vital and vibrant its accompanying sound,
the song has a serious message. On the surface it presents the irresponsible
attitude of a house owner who doesn’t seem to care much that his house is
falling apart from the roof down. Implicitly, it conveys a spiritual message that
makes an old house a symbol of the transience of the material world. The
same fundamental notion underlies the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles –
Succoth – for this commemorates the forty-year wanderings of the Israelites in
the desert of Sinai before their arrival in the Promised Land. During this time
the Israelites built no permanent structures, living as they did in flimsy booths
recalled every year in the Jewish calendar by the making of succas,
constructions without a closed roof or high supporting walls. We speak of
the »wanderings » of Israel and Goethe recalled in his semi-autobiographic work
Dichtung und Wahrheit the time when he as a boy was a welcome guest at
celebrations of Succoth in his native Frankfurt-am-Main. Indeed, a notable
scholar revealed how closely the words « Wanderer » and « Huette » are
interconnected in celebrated works written by Goethe from « Wandrers
Sturmlied » written during his Storm and Stress years to Faust Part II
completed near the close of his life. The basis of this book is Die Leiden des
jungen Werthers, »The Sufferings of Young Werther, » written in Goethe’s early
years as an author, a novella which gained fame and notoriety as a result of its
lamentable aftermath when young men swooned and took their own lives in
imitation of Werther. At the ripe old age of seventy-seven the speaker in This
Ole House has little reason to contemplate anything as drastic as suicide as he
knows nature will take its course soon enough. However, parallels between his
situation as an aging Jewish teacher on the German-Dutch border between
Aachen and Venlo and that of Werther in snobbish and socially resrictive
Wetzlar become increasingly apparent as the narrative of This Ole House
progresses.

VORWORT
In

Letters to Wilhelm from Julius
Dear Wilhelm. I make so bold as to direct this letter to you as
I gained the distinct impression during our conversation at
the pub « Zum Ewigen Wanderer » that the anecdotes drawn
from my life’s experience gripped your attention. You yourself
egged me on to tell more of my life’s story, though it beats me
why you want to know more about it. Well then, if something
is worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Agreed? I suggest that
we stay securely put in the tradition of old-fashioned letter
writing. None of those mindless e-mails, thank you ! I find it a
terrible shame that everybody is deserting the art of writing
epistles in the grand old style of Richardson and Goethe in
their novels. Is it purely coincidental that you share the name
of Wilhelm with Werther’s pen pal ? But aren’t I rushing
ahead too fast ? I’ll wait until you confirm that you are
interested in continuing with our correspondence. Yours ,
Julius.
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, Your positive response has given me great
pleasure. So you are ready to receive letters from me and,
better still, to read them, just as I have a great interest in
reading your letters. You fear that my allusion to Werther
spells danger, given the sad story of Werther. There is no
reason to worry in this regard, dear Wilhelm! I can assure you
without further ado that with my 77 years, what reason
would I need to consider something as romantic as suicide, if a
certain professionally adept gentleman with a scythe will
soon enough do the necessary for my dispatch to the afterlife?
We had better leave this unsettling subject! You obviously
7. 7
suspect that an English Jew who lived forty years in
Germany, has had reason to suffer from time to time. That's
what you said, not I, mark you . As my good German friends
will confirm, I have always been proud to publicly admit that
I am an island monkey (derogatory term for anEnglishman). I
have always had a lot of respect for monkeys and I still
consider them to be very intelligent and enterprising animals.
Yes, I see them in a very positive light. On this point, I now
tell a true story. On a beautiful summer day, I accompanied a
family when we made a trip to the open spaces, more precisely
in a forest near our place of residence. The family consisted of
parents and three children, an eleven year old girl and two
boys aged nine and seven respectively. The case began
harmlessly enough, when, in order to amuse the children, I
started a veritable monkey dance that involved walking in a
lowered posture, hitting my chest and making grimaces of the
most extraordinary and grotesque kind..
The boys were totally excited about this activity and
energetically followed suit. I do not know what took hold of me
at that moment, Wilhelm. I clambered up and down the slopes
and gyrated among the trees, as if I had become a real full-
bodied monkey, when suddenly, frozen stiff, an elderly couple
stood directly in front of me, visibly scared as if the devil had
arrived in person. The man in the family, the faithful
Johannes, noticed what was happening and explained to the
traumatized couple that I did not pose any real danger
despite my appearance, although I was a bit crazy. I hope,
Wilhelm, after reading this letter, that you still want to
receive letters. Julius

Dear Wilhelm, You do not know how relieved I was to know
that you want to continue our correspondence regardless of
the last revelation. You ask me where exactly I lived in
Germany. To the far west, as far west as you can go near the
border with the Netherlands and not too far from Belgium. I
remain vague on details in view of the need to exercise
discretion, as if our letters fall into the wrong hands, they
could be subject to legal action by the persons concerned. It
was never my intention, I stress, to cross or intimidate people.
The vast majority of those I met in my life were really kind
and caring. A stray bounder may have entered the scene,
but you get those everywhere in the world, don’t you? I was a
teacher and there is a lot to tell about my teaching
experiences. The least problems I had with students or parents,
which is not necessarily the case with some colleagues - and
certainly not with a particular director. But I'm not going to
burden you with such things right now. However, there is
plenty of material for future reports.
Best wishes to you and your family, dear Wilhelm! See you
soon. Yours, Julius
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, you are asking a legitimate question. How is it
that I am installed in such a remote place? I did not spend the
full forty years of my residence in Germany there, "only" for
twenty-five years, with two years off in Texas. In 1971, my
wife and I arrived in Cologne, where I started a twelve-year
9. 9
career as an English teacher. At that time, a so-called "teacher
shortage" prevailed. First of all, I was hired by a British
organization, then I became state employee in the teaching
profession (Lehrer im Angestellten Verhältnis, not by the way
a Beamter, a civil servant, for want of a better translation, a
status rarely accorded to non-Germans). I first had a very
cordial relationship with the directors of the Vocational
College where I worked, but things turned sour when I
converted to Judaism. In fac, I had Jewish and Irish ancestry
on the paternal side. My wife came from Israel and I had a
Jewish great-grandmother on my father’s side. I do not mean
to say that I became the victim of anti-Semitic resentment, but
it bothered the directors that I was no longer willing and able
to work on Saturdays and, on occasions, Jewish holidays. The
situation calmed down considerably when I took my leave in
Texas for a two-year study period. When I returned to
Germany, I was ordered to go to the western border of the
archipelago. I say all this, Wilhelm, so that you can follow the
further developments of my career more closely. I'm finishing
this letter now and will air fresh topics in the next. Julius
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, I congratulate you on your birthday. At
thirty, you are a young’n , at least from my point of view. It is
also rewarding that your health has changed for the better.
Back to the old subject! Your assumption that I would have a
hard time meeting challenges soon after my stay in Texas
was on the mark. On the other hand, I had the positive feeling
that a new beginning in my life was imminent. It is difficult
to describe the nature of this feeling or situation. I thought
10. 10
that I had a great mission to fulfill in this world: to play the
role of a savior of humanity, cost what it may, and do
whatever else I could put into practice in pursuance of
utopian dreams and fantastic aspirations? I gave money to
impecunious people without asking for a refund. I wanted to
be more papal than the Pope, more Christian than the
Christians. As some philosophers have asserted, even a stupid
ass has some place on earth so that others know what to avoid.
I became involved in the welfare of a young married couple
then suffering from financial difficulties related to
unemployment. Jutta referred me to an advertisement in the
local rag giving details of a farmhouse for sale . We visited
this interesting prospect and discovered the paradoxical sight
of a solidly built house in very poor condition, the old
cowshed being the best preserved part of the whole. At least
his had a waterproof roof and a respectable appearance. The
price was affordable, hardly surprising, and as a teacher in
state employment, I had enough financial means, or rather
creditworthiness, to buy the thing. And on top of that: the
house and surrounding area included 2000 square meters of
land. I would obviously have up roll up my sleeves. Julius
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, you are not the first person to suggest that my
plan to buy a dilapidated farmhouse in the middle of nowhere
was a crackpot idea. At least your choice of words was
discreet. You only wrote of a "remarkable decision."
Nevertheless, my plan could have worked, assuming, I repeat
assuming, I could count on loyal, determined and dedicated
assistants. Things turned out differently, as they so often do
As to the young couple, the blessing of the house was skew-
11. 11
whiff. The wife showed her husband to the door, not without
reason, if stories of marital violence are anything to go by. She
now had nothing but mockery and distain for our common
project which had seemed earlier to enthuse her. For all she
cared I could be left to stew alone in my run-down folly. I still
felt sorry for her husband, and thanks to the mediation of his
older brother Kalle, I was able to be reconciled to him.
Curiously enough, back in 1985, the year of my new arrival in
Germany, I did not intend to stay there for long. I wanted to
write a thesis after completing the preliminary work at the
University of Texas at Austin. My thesis topic was "The
Wanderer as a Mirrored Leitmotif in the Poetry of Goethe," I
remind you of the place where we met. in the tavern called
"Zum Ewigen Wanderer.”
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, you are absolutely right. "Wanderer" as a
keyword is not limited to Goethe's poems. It can also be found
in "The Sorrows of the Young Werther". A direct hit! It
appears in two important textual locations. Werther
complains pathetically. "Yes, I am only a passenger
(Wanderer), a pilgrim (Waller) on earth," in German : “..jawohl
bin ich nur ein Wanderer, ein Waller auf der Erde,”the very
words with which Goethe had translated a passage in James
Macpherson's Ossian:, "" The traveler will come. " In my
doctoral thesis, I wanted to prove that Goethe's frequent and
telling repetition of the word "Wanderer," at least in his
early works in the “Storm and Stress” phase of literature,
reflected the strong influence of English-speaking authors such
as Oliver Goldsmith, James Macpherson and Edward Young
on Goethe, but on the other hand, when the German word
"Wanderer" retroactively impacted Coleridge, Wordsworth
12. 12
and other English-speaking poets, "Wanderer" did not revert to
“traveller” or another word that would normally be the
equivalent of the German word but remained "wanderer" in
English, which is also reflected in Longfellow's translation of "
Wandrers Nachtlied "by Goethe with the words" Wanderer's
Night Songs. " Unfortunately, the main argument in my thesis
was rejected out of hand by members of my supervisory
committee entrusted with the authority to evaluate my
efforts. Oh, enough of this air-fairy talking shop for today,
Yours Julius
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, Your reaction to what you described as "the
rough and ready" way that some professors Texas treated me
clearly shows that within you a human heart pulsates for
misunderstood students and doctoral candidates; your
reaction also shows a tendency often evinced by charitable
people such as yourself to overlook the deficiencies of those
who occupy high and imposing positions, indeed those of
whom one might have expected better things. Those who waft
in higher regions of sublime thoughts are quite capable of
producing what to ordinary mortals must come across as
incomprehensible or, if comprehensible, then absurd
assertions, among them the doctrine that literature has no
relation with "external" events of a historical, biographical or
religious-moral nature. Forget the fact that Milton was blind
when he composed “On his Blindness,” if you can! The very
word "Wanderer" explodes this thesis, making both it and
anyone who often mentions it the object of great suspicion. To
quote Lord Byron: “All wandering is the worst of sinning.”
Oh, so sorry, How about something much more interesting?
My children. didn’t mean to drool on like this about my
13. 13
academic woes and forsake my current goal; I wanted to talk
about my children. Here I touch on the saddest aspect of my
divorce, the separation of my children, which was no less
painful for the fact that we spent the summer holidays
together, whether during my visits to the States, when spent
time in Germany, Canada, England or in Israel on the
occasion of the Bat Mitzvah my daughter and four years later
the Bar Mitvah of my son. In later reports, I always return to
my children. Greetings also to your family. Tell me about them
in your next, Julius
****************************
Dear Wilhelm, You asked me how things went after buying
the dilapidated farmhouse. It was - to say the very least -
adventurous. Willy and Kalle, the brothers whom I have
already mentioned, agreed to help me with the renovation of
the house, for example by papering the walls, decorating,
garden work, and so on. Having lost a roof over his head,
Willy moved in and shortly after that a lady and her child
joined him. According to Willy she was set to become his new
wife or new partner, but this hope came to nothing after a
short while. As soon as she had gone, her brother came along;
Juergen, aptly described by Kalle as “sledgehammer man,”
was a Jack of all trades with great expectations, including the
one to take over my property after knocking down its value
by making it more dilapidated than it already was. Great was
my surprise one spring when, on returning from a trip to
Texas, I was appalled by the sight of the roofless cowshed!
Initially it was his ostensible aim to create a paradise out of
the land surrounding the house, on condition of course, that
he could occupy a room in the house for free. So in my
dilapidated house, there were many mansions. When Willy
remarried his first wife at the local registry office , Kalle and
14. 14
I attend the ceremony as best men. I found Gabriella, Willy's
old-new wife very friendly. Her body was chubby, her
character down-to-earth and cheerful. As a thorough-going
“Hausfrau,” she provided an element of stability as well as
a tidy and highly organized home, which afforded me the
most welcome advantage of traveling and enjoying greater
freedom of movement. By now I also had a car, though not
one in the best technical condition. Even this banger proved
useful , cutting the drive to my school from an hour and a
half by bus to half an hour. Furthermore, I had the
opportunity to visit an elderly widowed aunt in England, and
also to attend Jewish services on the Sabbath in Cologne with
greater frequency; not least. I had more time to engage in
research at the University Library. I have yet to you about
Lady and Rex, my German shepherd dogs, otherwise named
“Alsatians.” Until then, Yours, Julius
**************************
Dear Wilhelm, In order to bring home to you the whole
history of the German shepherd dogs, the "Deutsche
Schäferhunde", I have to go back in time when Willy and his
young, that is, his second, wife entered my dilapidated
farmhouse in a hamlet where there was only a small chapel
and a "village tavern", and even that would soon close its
doors . Willy decided to rear dogs on the farm grounds. In
fact, the idea was to buy two pure-bred German shepherd
dogs, although only Lady’s pedigree was attested by genuine
papers, according to the vendor, at least.. If the two dogs had
had the necessary papers we could have fetched a good price
for the sale of their puppies. As things turned out, our plan did
not come to fruition once Willy's marriage had failed.
Nevertheless, Lady bore several puppies, which were sold at a
somewhat modest price, before Willy gave away – or, more
15. 15
probably, flogged - Rex to someone or other without prior
agreement . But Lady stayed with me, the most faithful and
gentle animal imaginable, that is, as regards people, not
chickens. One day she perpetrated a horrible massacre at a
nearby poultry farm. Fortunately, I had had her insured
against such an eventuality. The damage was not
inconsiderable. though. Guinea fowl were involved. Another
strange thing, my being a Jewish owner of German shepherd
dogs in Germany. Did I spare a thought for Jewish men,
women and children terrorized by such snarling animals,
when imprisoned or fleeing in fear of their lives? Now I think
about them. Yours, Julius
**************************
Dear Wilhelm, You couched your phrasing with great tact,
but I inferred from your last letter the need to probe the
reason for my being disappointed and taken in by so many
people, for my being a “schlemihl” as the Yiddish expression
goes. If I had a clear answer to that question, I would gladly
give it to you. Maybe this fault is deeply rooted in the
subconscious layers of my psyche and if that is the case, I will
have to wander in the darkness of my mind in search of its
cause and cure. Does the problem concern only the sphere of
my individual personality or perhaps a vast cultural and
historical environment? To hit the nail on the head, can a
member of the Jewish community, or a person who identifies
with the Jewish people at any level, feel safe in Germany? I do
not mean in this regard the danger of bodily hurt, but
injuries of a different kind like those inflicted by some
apparently innocuous turn of phrase or unintended reference
to events in the historical past. I recall a discussion in the
office of a bank manager when his assistant referred to “the
16. 16
final solution,” in German “die Endloesung,” of a certain
financial problem. Apart from the possibility that a Jew is
treated unjustly there is the greater likelihood, in my
experience at least, of being treated exceptionally well out of a
regard for political correctness rather than out of genuine
solicitude. Strange as it may sound, I would prefer to be
treated without fear or favour as a person who happens to be
Jewish rather than as the bearer of a label that covers over all
that lies beneath. This assessment does not tell the whole
story. In the long term, even the veneer of being nice to a Jew
wears off. As long as it was assumed that my stay in Germany
would be of short duration, a number of influential people in
my school put up with my presence but once it was clear that
I had a long-term stake in maintaining the status of a
property owner things changed. I remember it clearly. It was
the eve of Yom Kippur when the teachers had their annual
day out. Though I had to begin the fast that evening I joined
the group just at the moment they were assembled in a chapel
of some architectural or historical note. As I entered the priest
was delivering a poignant and heart-rending speech on the
suffering of Jews in the Nazi period. As we left I got a number
of dirty looks from those who should have known letter. Two
weeks later, after school on Friday, I was called to school
director’s office. The director informed me that several
students had complained about my wearing of dirty and
shabby clothes and the alleged fact that I could have done
with a good shower on a number of occasions. Some had
questioned my methods of teaching. In response to such claims
he had been obliged to notify the government department
responsible for supervising the quality of teacher performance
and effectiveness. When I enquired why the said complaints
had not been brought to my attention earlier, that is to say
before the authorities were notified of complaints against me,
he went red in the face and wished me “a good Sunday.” A
17. 17
couple of weeks later there was an unannounced visit to one of
my classes by a government inspector accompanied by an
advisor who was a qualified teacher of English. No substantial
criticism of my lesson emerged but the inspector informed me
that I would continue to remain under the director’s
surveillance. I countered that no warning concerning
complaints had been given to me before they were forwarded
to the inspector’s department and I for my part levelled a
criticism concerning the manner in which the director had
tried to frustrate my legally valid applications for release
from teaching duties on Yom Kippur and on other statuary
Jewish festivals. My words hit hard , though the inspector
asserted that my accusations were unjustified. However, he
inwardly took stock of the situation and subsequently proved
to be a fair-minded and well-meaning individual . The whole
matter for him was highly distasteful and embarrassing. The
government department invariably backed me up in this and
subsequent altercations. A report that the director filed to the
department falsely stated that he had admonished me before
notifying the government administration and that I had not
improved my conduct. As I suspected at the time and found to
be true later, the director was not the true instigator of the
action against me. For the next thirteen years I was dogged
by the feeling that I had to watch my step very carefully and
this feeling was not groundless. It was not only on the school
front that I would have battles to fight.Yours, Julius.
************************
Dear Wilhelm, How right you were to add a very important
point to those I made concerning covert or overt expressions
of anti-Semi tism in my last letter when you pointed to the a
widespread reproach levelled again Jews in general and
against the leaders of Israel in particular. This alleges that
18. 18
Jews play on German feelings of guilt occasioned by the
Holocaust. At many a proverbial “Stammtisch” in taverns
and inns you will overhear things like “What happened to
Dresden was just as bad as what happened in Auschwitz.” I
can hardly object to any statement enhancing awareness
of the horrors inflicted by an unwarranted and excessive use
of air power in an raid on a city packed with refugees, as
long as this expression of outrage does not serve to “relativize”
the Holocaust as just one more example of the regrettable
things that crop up occasionally throughout history.
Officially school authorities accept the need to expose the evils
perpetrated under the National Socialist dictatorship but in
my school at least I noted some hesitancy in this regard. On
the one hand the school as a body watched Schindler’s List at
the local cinema. On the other, when the opportunity arose for
teachers to take classes to an exhibition designed to give
students some idea of the physical layout of the Auschwitz
death camp as a way of exposing the evil purposes for which
it was constructed, few classes were taken there. That’s all for
now.Yours, Julius
************
Dear Wilhelm, Many a true word is said in jest. I admired
your candor and perspicacity when you asked me whether I
secretly nurtured the ambition of writing a new version of
The Sorrows of Young Werther. It never crossed my mind that
you saw yourself in the role of being a foil to my literary
pretensions. Far be it from me to exploit a fellow human being
in so pernicious a way! Incidently, on the side-table to my left
are a glass and a bottle with a very strange label on it. It
reads Monkey Shoulder Whiskey. The real Mackay! A Scottish
friend, knowing of my interest in monkeys, brought it along
the other day. Apparently, before the advent of modern
19. 19
technology workers in distilleries had to apply heavy pressure
when grinding rye or barley and this left them with the
disability of an aching shoulder. Anyway, a word on Wilhelm
and his part in The Sorrows.. . In one way he hardly counts,
but in another his importance is central. The very structure
of the novella is dependent on him, for without him Werther
could not have expressed himself in the way he did and we the
readers would have been left with a dreary and uneventful
monologue. Wilhelm poses more than a an artificial albeit
necessary prop . Think of his name. Where else do we find a
Wilhelm in Goethe’s writings? In his Wilhelm Meister novels of
course. So what? Well then, both Werther and Wilhelm
Meister were intrigued by the character of Hamlet, especially
Wilhelm Meister, an actor and theatre director by calling. Do
you see what I am driving at? Werther called himself a mere
“wanderer “ on life’s short journey, and where do we find the
first major occurrence of the word “Wanderer” in Goethe’s
writings? In the “Rede zum Shakespeares Tag,” composed in
1771 when Goethe declared himself free of artificial
conventions that had been imposed on drama by neoclassical
rules. Shakespeare appears in the speech as a giant rolling into
one Prometheus and the folkoric stalker in seven-league
boots as he staggers like a drunkard from one part of the globe
to another, without guidance, without aim. And yet, Wilhelm.
in mature year Goethe dedicated a poem to “William and
Lida,” code names for Shakespeare and Frau von Stein, those
to whom, in his own words, he “owed all that he was.”
Shakespeare in the guise of a the reeling giant had at length,
stage by stage, become a bosom friend, and one such stage
coincided with penning of The Sorrows. You get my point? So
even if you did play, and I am not saying that you did, the
role of your namesake in that famous work to which I so often
refer, you would hold a place of high honour. Is it not possible
that the William so closely associated with Shakespeare in
20. 20
Goethe’s mind represents something even greater than the
immortal bard? Could this something be the guardian
appointed by Providence to accompany and defend every
soul? Everyman, perhaps. Good stuff, that whiskey! Yours,
Julius

Dear Wilhelm, Point well taken! I am an escapist. Like Jonah I
have gone west. But Jonah could not escape the solemn
obligation to go east, it says in the Bible. The world is bigger
than us and it catches up on all its fugitives in the end. I liked
your comparison to me in my shambolic ruin and Robinson
Crusoe on his desert island. You have no idea how close you
are to the truth. I must now tell you the story of Friday. Let
me skip a few years . Willy, his wife and daughter have left
for more accommodating quarters down the lane and I live
alone, well almost so. A Dutchman, Nick by name, has a
room in the farmhouse though most of the time he is off in his
capacity as a truck driver. As a matter of interest, he was the
last landlord of the only bar in the village. In lieu of rent he
does a fine job renovating parts of the farmhouse, so far the
only person to have done so. I revert to the past tense when
recounting a most remarkable sequence of events. I heated the
house, or at least the more or less habitable part of it, with an
stove and used brown coal briquettes s as fuel. I was hauling a
sack of these things into the courtyard of the farmhouse, when
who should offer a hand but, as I was soon to learn, a
Nigerian by the name of Friday? He came into the kitchen
and told me about himself and his predicament. He was an
asylum seeker who had arrived in the Netherlands some time
before but found the living conditions offered him
unacceptable, or so he said. He crossed the border into
Germany on foot and presented himself to the authorities as
21. 21
soon as he could to renew his claim. At that time he was
perfectly entitled to do so. Only later came the ruling that
asylum seekers were not entitled to lodge a claim in any EU
country other than the one where they first arrived. This
change was already being mooted in political circles but had
yet to come into effect., which did not stop certain officials
from taking the law into their own hands, as the following
account of events shows only too clearly. Friday received a
very unfriendly reception at the office where applications for
asylum were dealt with. Friday’s claim was dismissed and
when he persisted in claiming his legal rights he was
denounced as one who could well be suspected of being a
murderer. He was granted temporary accommodation but he
feared, not without reason, that he would be deported at a
moment’s notice. To cut a long story short, I let him stay at the
farmhouse until he could renew his application under the
surveillance of a lawyer and witnesses. An English friend of
mine, who lived in Cologne, also wanted to take up Friday’s
cause. I met Friday just before Christmas, on the day of the
First Advent as noted by a neighbor, if fact the person who
had sold the farmhouse to me. When April came around it
was high time to come into the open and present Friday’s case
to the authorities once more. After all , he was legally entitled
to do so and this time he had supporting witnesses. All to no
avail, for on the day Friday, my English friend and I entered
the office of the same official who had rejected or mishandled
his first application, things turned very nasty indeed and the
word “Polizei” was in the air, a signal that we had no
alternative to beating a hasty retreat other than being
arrested. We stealthily returned to the farmhouse but
realized that it could no longer serve as a safe haven. How
right we were. Early next morning Friday and I left the house
and drove off to Moenchen Gladbach, known to the world
outside its immediate vicinity on account of its prestigious
22. 22
football team. On my return Nick told me that just after
Friday and I had left, only by a few minutes in fact, a police
detail demanded entry into the house, now surrounded by
border guards. Even to this day I dare not be explicit on how
we got Friday to Cologne or where he stayed that night. In
Cologne Friday presented himself to the authorities and this
time his application was attended to in accordance with the
law. However, I still incurred an accusation of being a people
smuggler. The case was eventually suspended on the condition
that I paid five hundred D-marks to the Red Cross. Friday
went on to find a German girlfriend, then wife, and become
the father of three delightful daughters. He was commended
for bravery and service to the community for overmanning
an armed criminal outside a discotheque in Cologne. Well, I lie
not. All I have written is true. Does that make me and
Robinson Crusoe fellow travellers, or perhaps fellow
wanderers. As a matter of interest my research into the use of
the word “wanderer,” or more precisely words based on the
common root of the verbs “wander and “to wander,” led me to
closely reading Defoe’s great story. I noted that “wandering”
is in close proximity to a reference to “my father’s house,”
suggesting, to me at least, that the parable of the Prodigal Son,
informs the world’s most famous adventure story, which
Defoe, with Crusoe as his mouthpiece, took to be an allegory.
Many literary critics these days don’t like allegories very
much. By the way, I still haven’t polished off that bottle
bearing the title “Monkey Shoulder Whiskey.” I can assure
you that I’m never under the influence when I write to
you,Yours, Julius
Dear Wilhelm, How right you are! The migrant crisis didn’t
arrive on the scene overnight though few seem to have heeded
23. 23
the warning signs. You referred to your impression that the
chronology of events at the fatmhouse t is a bit hazy in places,
and I’m sure you’re right. Of course, we never intended our
correspondence to amount to some kind of standard history of
village life, and yet it has given me occasion to ponder about
the value of writing letters or anything else, come to that.
Writing encourages the writer to be orderly in the
presentation of facts, arguments and explanations, or should
do. In a strange way it makes you confront what has been
consciously or subconsciously suppressed. Perhaps I could take
a leaf from the opening chapter of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s
Confessions, particularly where he states that on Judgment
Day he will give account of his life by pointing to his book and
addressing the Supreme Judge with the words “It’s all there, I
have nothing more to add.” Perhaps the time is ripe for a
more systematic presentation of events that overtook me after
the Friday incident. I take 1990, the year of German
reunification, as my starting point. Between then and the
time I left the house in 1998. I suffered two major reverses,
one in connection with my doctorate the other with matters
arising from a legal struggle with tenants, this leading to the
sale of my property. From 1998 until 2000 again I came under
attack from a school director, but not the same one I
mentioned earlier. In the latter case it was I who prevailed.
Now I have a framework, an orderly timetable. May the
regularity of my design forbid “all wandering as the worst of
sinning”! Yours, Julius.

Dear Wilhelm, The writing of a dissertation is no easy
business, especially if the one working on it is far removed
from his supervisory committee or a university library. I had
done some preliminary work on my chosen theme on campus
of the University of Texas at Austin. In fact this theme sprang
to mind as a direct result of my participation in a seminar on
Goethe’s poetry. My term papers earned the high estimation of
the professor who later turned out to be the chairman of my
committee. My point average for course work at 4.00 could
not be higher though this was slightly reduced as a result of a
B plus awarded for a paper I completed after leaving the
campus. My various preoccupations did not allow me to work
on the dissertation with the intensity which I could have
maintained as a fulltime student but I did manage to establish
a theoretical premise for my approach to the subject of the
motif announced by the word W”anderer” in Goethe’s
writings, his poetry in the main. I adopted a logo-centric
approach, that is to say an approach that focused on
implications to be drawn from the location of certain words or
combinations of words. I found my working basis in an article
by Professor L. A. Willoughby entitled “The Image of the
‘Wanderer’ and the ‘Hut’ in Goethe’s Poetry. In doing so I
explored possibilities implied by Willoughby’s contention that
the frequency and combinatory effects in the w0rd
“Wanderer” as found throughout Goethe’s writings reflected
the power and influence of the workings of the mind at a
subconscious level that even transcend the mind of one
individual to include “the collective unconscious.” Willoughby
himself, as I saw it, never put his theory to the test as he
restricted his study to the works of Goethe. Well, I could go on
to expatiate on my line of thought till the cows come home.
This is unnecessary in view of the fact that I have written
more than one book on matters concerning this area of
enquiry. In a way I am grateful to my committee for
25. 25
terminating my candidature as otherwise I might well have
received the title of “doctor of philosophy,” as one professor
termed this the “bread ticket” you need to earn a living in the
world of higher education, only to enter this world as
latecomer, and then did I really want to enter this world in
any case? Now university professors and the like are in
ethical terms no worse than ordinary folks in the common
herd, but they are certainly no better. The trouble is that one
expects them to be – I mean, with all that wisdom, high
learning and all. For this and other reasons the termination of
my candidature didn’t hit me too hard. I determined to
pursue my research into “wandering” in my own time, at my
own pace and at my own leisure. Once I got into the Internet
and the use of search engines and other computer-supported
facilities, late in life I may add, writing academic articles and
even books became relatively straightforward. I conclude this
letter by pinpointing what I deem the fundamental problem
involved by “wandering” as the theme of a dissertation. The
word itself militates against established theories that are
upheld in academic and literary circles according to which
literature is a closed autonomous zone whence matters like
the personal lives of authors, historical realities and even
assertions of religious faith or personal conviction are
debarred entry. Once I remarked to the head of my committee
that he and I were at loggerheads on certain matters. To my
surprise he countered: Oh, so you believe in truth, do you?
Julius
.
Dear Wilhelm. As I promised, or threatened to divulge, I now
come to the second crisis that I faced during my exile, my
gulut, in the German provinces. This crisis led to my
abandonment of the farmhouse, and it is an open question
whether this departure was a loss or a release. It is a strange
paradox that a traveller’s misfortune is sometimes a writer’s
26. 26
blessing. Had Robinson Crusoe come home safely after
surviving a mighty tempest he would probably have led the
sedate and comfortable life of an English country gentleman
without much to write about. With so many causes of
contentment why would he even bother with much writing
anyway? Even in a hick village you can’t get away from the
world outside. I one of my books I recall the eerie feeling of
entering East Germany after the fall of the Berlin wall. The
border controller did not cast a glance at my passport with his
distant far-off look like a zombie in one of its quieter moments.
I also witnessed major disruptions closer at home. They say “as
safe as houses,” or they used to say that before 2008. The one
colleague I got on with very well was Jupp, an expert teacher
of languages, French, English and Dutch. In fact, on the
border where I lived the dialect spoken was indistinguishable
from the Limburg patois on the other side in the Netherlands.
I do not wish to cast Puritan aspersions on his way of life, but
he enjoyed the prestige of a man whom a million women
adore, as a popular song in those days proclaimed. He was
small in stature and very active – in things like amateur
football, I hasten to add. After divorcing his first wife he, on
his own admission, fell head over heels in love with a lady
from East Europe. They were soon married and soon in each
other’s hair. In order to shore up his finances in expectation of
his imminent divorce he mortgaged his property, a very nice
home with a spacious garden that I often visited, he living in
an adjacent village, so as to massively invest in the dizzy
“dot.com” market at the turn of the millennium. After its
collapse he, far from making a killing, landed heavily in debt.
He may have put on a cheerful face but only a couple of years
later he died of a heart attack. A similar fate overcame one of
the two brothers I mentioned earlier, Kalle by name. He built
“his own house,’ by which I mean supervising each stage in the
building process from the excavation of ground to give room
27. 27
the cellar and foundations of the building in question to the
plastering of internal walls and the installation of utilities.
Midway through this process he and his wife divorced and on
account of a misunderstanding with the bank financing his
project was landed in debts of a magnitude that precluded
any likelihood of a return to solvency. Under such
circumstances the debtor could declare bankruptcy by
“raising a finger” to quote a common way of referring to
making an oath averring insolvency before a court of law. He
married again, and, to quote the words of Brother Willy, she
was a woman of character, smallish by stature with a striking
though not particularly alluring facial expression. Again, I
wanted to help those in distress, soft-hearted or soft-headed as
I was. His wife was not bound by the impositions resulting
from Kalle’s oath and remained a free agent in financial
terms. Kalle, actually a carpenter by training, undertook to
create an apartment under a roofed section of the house, if
after an anticipated great increase in the value of my
property thanks to his efforts, a portion of the house would be
transferred to his wife after the elapse of so fifteen years, thus
avoiding the claims of Kalle’s creditors on assets in his
possession. In the meantime Kalle, his wife and three children
would live in the apartment Kalle himself had created. They
would pay a low rent and cover running costs such as heating
and electricity charges. After the lapse of fifteen years Kalle
and his family would receive a building plot extracted from
the land around the farmhouse or a large fixed bonus in
lieu. What prompted me to enter into such a risky
arrangement was the desire to offer my elderly aunt a place
to live instead of being chased from pillar to post with each
move from or into an old people’s home. Nick, who in the
meantime had married and returned to a nearby town in the
Netherlands, sensed trouble ahead. T Kalle declined to
prepare a place for my aunt and contrary to our plan made
28. 28
no contribution to cover running costs such as heating and
electricity. For I time I took on the extra financial load but an
inspection of the property by a bank official helped me to
recognize that this situation could not continue. I engaged a
property management firm to set matters right but then
Kalle’s wife brought an action against me in pursuance of
securement of a plot of land or the payment of the sum
specified in our agreement. A legal battled followed that
ended in my paying half the sum to which I have referred.
Kalle and his family left and another family occupied the
apartment. However, this family did not stay very long. I
was not surprised that families in trouble resorted to unusual
ways of ensuring financial survival but it did trouble men
that lawyers of some standing like one named Herr
H****mann, known in legal circles for his bullying and
churlish manner, put them up to placing at great
disadvantage one who was trying to help them out of long-
term insolvency. Inevitably I inwardly recalled the weight of
the German past in the knowledge that the legal system after
the war preserved elements rooted in the preceding
undemocratic system and kept on its payroll those known to
have had sympathies with the Nazi regime. There was
consternation when the widow of Roland Freisler, the rabid
Judge Jeffries of the Nazi People’s Court, received a very
substantial state pension. By now I knew that the farmhouse
and I would soon part company, not only for reasons of
financial embarrassment. I was evidently not cut out to be a
property developer. That is not to say that I distained the
farmhouse, sensing as I did that to somebody at least it would
have great value. A local realtor or estate agent confirmed
me in that belief and two brothers from over the border with
the support of their parents expressed strong interest in
buying it at a fair price. The terms of sale were favorable in
other ways. I was entitled to say on the farm rent-free for a
29. 29
full year after sale, as long as it took the family with
considerable help from friends and neighbours to thoroughly
transform the property with such gusto that the ruined
cowshed gave way to a handsome-looking house for one of the
brothers and his family. It did not matter any more that the
large hay barn behind the house had collapsed as it gave place
to a very well equipped workshop. I derived some satisfaction
from the fact that the farmhouse became the home of those
who were eminently worthy of it, who valued its potential
and devoted themselves to its upkeep. You could almost say
that I wanted the best for the land much as the early Jewish
settlers had done in Eretz Israel. There’s one odd thing I should
also mention. When at the side of the house I heard a funny
hissing noise. A pipe that led from a large container full of
highly explosive gas had been tampered with. I called the
police and they ascertained proof of criminal activity
perpetrated by a person or persons unknown. The new
occupants agreed to adopt Lady. Only a week after I left the
house she died of a cancerous condition. Somehow symbolic
that.Await a report on the last great challenge I had to face!
Julius ************
Dear Wilhelm,Well, I won’t comment on your suspicions as to
who tampered with the gas unit. Had the thing exploded it
could have killed me or someone else. Maybe the motive was
simply to destroy the house and render it unsellable. Anyway,
trouble arose on a different front.
In 1999 I was called to the head teacher’s office and was asked
why I had not responded to a complaint lodged by the mother
of a student that alleged that I threatened students with bad
grades should they make negative comments on my teaching. I
suppose the letter caught up with me so late as a result of my
change of residence. In fact I had made no firm arrangements
about a new place to live and had been staying with friends. It
30. 30
was about this time that I “discovered” the Internet and its
uses to me as a teacher and researcher. In fact a German
professor had just placed an article I had written on the Pied
Piper of Hamelin on his website. I rebutted the accusations
but the head teacher in agreement with the supervisory
department in Cologne insisted that I should submit myself to
the occasional unannounced inspection of my lessons. I had
through been this before. I was awarded the right to appoint a
colleague of my choice to act as my advisor and defence
counsel, so to speak, I chose a fellow English teacher whose
name was Wolf. We got on well and I trusted him. I will call
the head teacher Herr Noeckel, not actually his real name, for
obvious reasons.
Herr Noeckel was a tall bespectacled gentleman with a lofty
air. He was generally considered to be authoritarian in
attitude and in his style of managing school affairs. I had
noted a certain frostiness and reserve in his bearing towards
me on the few occasions we had a reason to talk to each other
He was a noted churchman and a prominent member of the
Christian Democratic Party. He had recently failed in his bid
to be mayor of the town in which our school was situated. It
was largely due to his influence that the large Catholic church
became the permanent setting of the closing celebration in the
school year, a formal event at which parents as well as
students heard speeches of an edifying and inspirational kind
and where all were invited to join in the Lord’s Prayer, this
being held to be inoffensive to the many Moslem students in
the school. Some teachers entertained misgivings about
causing emotional discomfort among the students with a
Turkish or Moslem background some of whom would feel
uneasy in a place of Christian worship because of their
personal persuasion or in deference to their parents’ wishes.
When a young woman teacher, whose range of subjects
included “Catholic religion,” drew attention to this issue, the
31. 31
head teacher uttered sententiously that he was “surprised” by
her attitude in the matter under discussion. She remained
silent during the rest of the conference.
As I could not afford to be caught off guard or found to be
unprepared for a lesson, I took the extra precaution of taking
up residence in a hotel next to the school. It was run by a
Serbian, the father of one of my students. It was a time of high
emotion just when Nato forces were bombing Belgrade. As a
matter of fact, I felt some sympathy for the Serbians in
acknowledgement of their sufferings during the period of the
Second World War and needed to fend off a growing
antipathy to my German environment. Once the head teacher,
accompanied by Wolf, asked me leave the classroom where I
was teaching and demanded the immediate surrender of some
marked exam papers. I informed him that I had been made
aware of his efforts to actively encourage students to
complain about me and added that he would be well advised
to demonstrate greater sensitivity towards the feelings of Jews
and members of other minority, reminding him as I did so of
Germany’s obligation to draw lessons from the past. When he
retorted by uttering the word “billig” meaning “cheap,” I
asked him to excuse me as I had further teaching to do.
Things came to a head on the day Herr Noeckel banned me
teaching until further notice as I had scared or exercised
undue pressure on a person subject to me in a relationship of
trust, the daughter of the lady who had lodged the complaint
against me. I had just met the girl by chance in the green belt
that extended to the school entrance. I asked her to suggest to
her mother that she contact me to clarify the basis on which
she had made her complaints, for doing so would be in her
own interest as manifestly false accusations opened the
counter-charge of defamation and could therefore necessitate
the intervention of the law, even police action. I didn’t mean
32. 32
to intimidate her but perhaps even this incident might prompt
people like Herr Noeckel to spare a thought for those Jewish
children were scared to death quite literally even before the
time of Auschwitz, Belsen and Sobibor.
Not long before, in fact, I had sought police advice after a
Turkish student shouted “Heil Hitler” in class. Herr Noeckel
made clear the enormity of the student’s offense but I feel it
would have been fitting if he had allowed me to attend the
interview in view of its inordinately egregious nature when
uttered in the presence of a Jew. In the course of a class
conference which impinged on a different matter but still
under the cloud of recent altercations surrounding my person,
I “blew my top,” walked round the school wearing a kippa,
and prayed with tallith and tefillin in front of a plaque
commemorating the synagogue that had one stood on a site
just over the road from the school. A sense of unrest in the
school was palpable, though things did quieten down
eventually. Both Herr Noeckel and I had to present ourselves
in an office of the government department responsible for the
surveillance of schools such as ours. Herr Noeckel challenged
me with the question as to whether I had any complaint to
level against him. A straight yes or no answer would have
landed me in a trap, so I just answered that the matter was
still under investigation, I finally presented questionnaire
sheets to the class I had supposedly threatened asking students
to itemize evidence for or against allegations of the kind
made in a certain mother’s letter. The sheets were then
immediately placed in a large envelope addressed to the
supervisory authority in Cologne, which a student posted. I
heard nothing of the matter ever again. In 1999 Herr Noeckel
committed the cardinal error of forwarding the complaint
against me to the government office in Cologne ; in his
covering letter he made a reference to my religious
33. 33
affiliation, which I allegedly harped on in a manipulative
fashion, I requested received a copy of this letter and , with
that in my pocket I knew I could bring diplomatic pressure to
bear. This was not necessary Herr Noeckel resigned from his
position and entered into early retirement on grounds of ill
health. I introduced myself to the following head teacher in a
welcoming manner. The remaining years at school until my
retirement passed unremarkably, at least with regard to such
matters as those I have just reported. I retired and spent my
first years of superannuation in a town next to the village
where I had lived earlier. I emigrated to Israel in 2013 as a
Oleh Hadash and thenceforward helped with family matters,
particularly as far as my daughter and granddaughter are
concerned My son Joseph, who lives and works in New York,
visits Israel frequently. Jerusalem is a great place from where
to look back on the life of a marginal Jew, marginal at least
with respect to his location close by the Dutch-German
border. I have had the opportunity to visit Europe on
occasions and the next time I do, let’s meet again at that place
called “The Eternal Wanderer.”Yours, Julius.
Dear Wilhelm,I add a few animal poem, the first being
dedicated to Lady, the second to Nyang, one of residents of my
farmhouse L haven’t mentioned so far.Take care,Julius
34. 34
To Lady and the Dog Star
They said a funny Latin word,
they said that you were dead,
yet merrily you wagged your tail
when I took you to the vet.
You were not kind to chickens,
as well the neighbours know,
or come to that, to ducks and geese,
and yet I loved you so.
Oh to recall the bygone days
we roamed and roved together,
sometimes when snow lay all about,
sometimes on purple heather.
Our walkies to the liquor store,
our excursions to the bar,
and all those times you led me home
when I couldn't use the car.
At night, I swear, an angel
looms in the purple sky,
and on a gently twinkling leash
you, Lady, lead on high.
NYANG
35. 35
I had a cat called Nyang.
She used to sit on my head.
I often think about Nyang.
What a pity she’s now dead.
I swear this ditty’s true.
I do, I do, I do
.
When Ignorance is Bliss
I can't complain with all this grub I'm getting
from dawn's first crack until the sun's last setting.
I'm glad to be the happy son of fate,
except for the fact I'm putting on some weight.
The people here all seem so happy too
but for one who's feeling very blue,
by which I mean the chieftain's elder son,
I have a hunch on why he's feeling glum.
His younger bro' turned up the other day,
forlorn and broke, the gossip-mongers say.
His fortune's gone and his last farthing's spent.
He really chose a fine time to repent.
All's past, forgiven and soon to be forgotten!
The reason's clear his brother feels so rotten.
To celebrate they're putting on a ball
with tons of guests and food and drinks for all.
I sometimes wonder where things are leading to.
But I'm well fed, so I should give a moo?
36. 36
On the inadvisability of keeping a crocodile as pet
He took a crocodile as pet,
ordered on the internet.
Fed Ex brought the little brute,
so harmless looking and so cute.
As little creatures tend to do,
his companion grew and grew,
as did its appetite, forsooth,
much too much, to tell the truth.
Lest my ending should appall
I will spare the details all.
Let dogs and cats and little mice
as our household friends suffice.
The Sad Tale of a Plucky Duck
There was a duck
that had the pluck,
the oomph and the nerve,
the courage and verve,
ro leave the farm,
braving all harm,
on a fateful night
by bright moonlight.
All went well,
at least for a spell.
37. 37
till it gave a last quack
on a beaten track
when a farmer’s truck
put an end to the luck.
of our brave little duck.
as well as this ditty.
Oh, what a pity!
AT THE CROSSING OF THESE WAYS
Wanderer, at the crossing of these ways
well met! We have no sure knowledge
whence we have come or whither we shall go,
38. 38
only we are here. But let us meet
in each other our own true selves,
forgetting lineage, confessing
we owe our being not only to great kings
but to tinkers tailors, beggar men,
thieves, to harlots as to queens.
Is Providence our parent, mere Chance,
or both? If Certainty you seek,
he will lead you to some cold place
by a bony hand. Seize the present
and make shared ignorance our bond,
frailty our strength, then
we shall not fear the fall of dice,
the sweeping scythe, for these release us
the very moment they would claim their prize.

Die Leiden des jungen Werthers im Einundzwanzigsten
Jahrhundert Fortgesetzt.
40. 40
Interesse habe, deine Briefe zu lesen. Du deutest an, meine
Deutschland ausgehalten habe.
In diesem Bezug erzähle
Briefwechsel fortsetzen willst.Du fragst mich, wo genauer in
verstehst de, denn falls unsere Briefe irgendwann einmal in
betroffenen Personen angestrengten Gerichtsverhandungen
kommen.
Wieso denn eigentlich? Die
grosse Mehrheit derer, denen ich in meinem Bekanntenkreis
begegnete, waren wirklich nett und wohlwollend. Darunter
Eltern, was, na ja, nicht unbedingt gewissen Kollegen galt -
42. 42
Wilhelm! Bis demnächst, also. Dein, Julius
abgelegenen Ort niedergelassen habe?
beurlaubte Jahre in Texas verbrachte.
juedischen Feiertagen arbeiten konnte.
zweijährigen Studienzeit in Texas beurlauben liess. Bei
meinem Wiederantritt in Deutschland wurde ich zum
Archipelag Westgrenze verordnet. Ich erzähle das Alles,
Wilhelm, nur damit du spätere Entwickungen in meiner
43. 43
Laufbahn effektiver verfolgen kannst.
Allein
davon zu erzählen tut weh, auch heute. Für diese Scheidung
gab es keinen nennbaren Grund. Was heisst “nennbar” hier?
Das, was man typischerweise mit Scheidung verbindet, meine
ich: Ehebruch Hass, unüberbrückbare
Meinungsverschiedenheiten oder so.
Nein, das nicht. Auseinander leben?
eigentlichen Thema. Das Leben eines inzwischen
vereinsamten ausländischen Juden in Deutschland. Warum
habeich denn meiner Einsamkeit Nachschub geleistet, indem
44. 44
mir nahegelegt haben “ am A. der Welt”? Darauf komme im
nachsten Brief.
verweilen.
in Austin hinter mich gebracht hatte. Mein
46. 46
Dissertationsthema hiess “Der Wanderer als Hauptmotif bei
Goethe im Spiegel seiner Gedichte.” Ich erinnere dich an den
Ort, wo wir uns zuerst trafen: “Zum Ewigen Wanderer”! Dein,
Julius.
h. “Der Wanderer wird kommen.” Hier zitiert Goethe sich
selbst als Übersetzer einer Passage in Ossian. “Der Wandrer
wird kommen” entspricht im englischen Urtext “The Traveller
will come.”
Deutsch “wanderer” in Englisch, was auch anhand
herumschwebt, läuft allzu oft Gefahr, in meinen Augen
Verzeihung!
unserem Beisammensein in Deutschland, Kanada, England
Erzähle daueber in deinem nächten Brief, Dein Julius.
meine Enkelin Meirav. Der Hans spielt ganz die Rolle des
älteren Bruders, der seine Schwester vor Dummheiten
bewahren will.
so.
An
Hilfe seines Vorschlaghammers..In meinem verfallenen
junge zweite Frau in mein verfallenes Bauernhaus umzogen,
verschwinden. Willy kam auf den Gedanken, Hundezucht auf
dem Gelände des Bauernhofs zu betreiben. In Erfüllung seines
Anliegens besorgte ich zwei reinrassige deutsche
50. 50
Hier kommt unser Briefeschreiben ins Spiel.
In beiden Fällen müssen
anderen Situationen, seinen Meinungen, Bemerkungen,
Vorstellungen, usw.
Körnchen Wahrheit in dem, was du andeutetest. Was
seinen eignen Weg geht.
Jacques Rousseau einmal deutlich gemacht.
einordnen.
Lieber Wilhelm, Punkt gut gemacht!
unmittelbaren Umgebung wegen seiner renommierten
57. 57
Grenzposten umgebene Haus verlangte.
Wanderkollegen.

mein Herangehen an d
