2. Deborah Holdstein- Music
video: messages and
structures
• Holdstein stated that video were divide into two categories which
were political themes and fantasy.
• Also, fantasy videos is based on the based of entirely on
performance. This format puts the group or star in a mythical, exotic
or surrealistic series of images and location
• Videos makes artist more accessible to the fans. When they come to
a performance then they bring or wear things that the audience seen
in the video
• In the past artist portrayal will only be left to viewers imagination and
how they are seen in music videos, tour, album cover and interviews
• However Deborah stated that the music videos speaks for it self
because it is more powerful and quicker.
3. Holdstein- Michaels Jackson-
beat it
• In this music video Michael Jackson is
portrayed as a fantasy and a political
reporter this is because he is telling
everybody to stop the gags and that
everybody should listen to the music
and dance together. Also, Mr Jackson
states that fighting is wrong and the
fact that nobody is than anyone
through is lyrics and passion.
• In addition, this music video shows
that Michael Jackson is talking about
the ghetto lifestyle and racism
because everybody should get
together and dance.
4. Holdstein- Michaels Jackson-
beat it
• At the start of the video we the
audience notice that their is a
gang about to meet up with
there rivals or opposition
• The political reporter known as
Michael Jackson gets an
instinct that there is about to be
a fight and somebody is in
trouble.
• Other gang are in the truce
ready to go to the location
where the other gang is going
to be at.
• Then ,Michael Jackson goes to
the location and he tells the
gang abut the wrong that they
are doing.
5. Andrew Goodwin theory of 5 key
aspects
• Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. Themes, mise-en-scene and events of the video match with
lyrics of the song, to help to portray the message of the song.
• Relationship between the music and the visuals. The cuts and edits of the video are in sync with the rhythm
and beat of the song matching cuts or effects to specific drum beats or notes.
• Music videos have genre characteristics Certain features are expected out of a video depending on the genre
of the music, for example a girl bands/artists are expected to have dancers and close ups of the singers,
whilst a Indi band are expected to have performance shots of the band and cut to a fast beat.
• Often due to the demands of the record label, artists videos will include many close ups of the artist and will
often develop motifs that recur across multiple videos. This allows the record label to promote a set image for
the band, which will help target audiences empathise with the band.
• Emphasis on 'looking' The 'male gaze' is often used to attract a male audience. The male gaze is a focus on
presenting things that appeal to men. This often means a voyeuristic view of, and an objectification, of
women. The emphasis on looking also includes the artist looking directly into the camera helping the
audience connect with the artist.
• Intertexual references- Music videos reference other forms of media, most commonly film, but can also be
television and other music videos.
6. Steps
• Step 1. To look at the music itself. We must take into
account the structure of the song.
• Step 2. The voice of the song. The artists voice is extremely
unique and can form identification or trademarks that work
well with the star image. Roland Barthes theory of the Grain
of voice can be related to this. He sees the singing voice as
an expressive instrument and therefore able to make
associations of its own.
• Step 3. Goodwin points out the artists mode of address.
Songs can be seen as stories and the artist the storyteller,
making the music video a two communication device –
them telling us a story and we listening.
7. Narrative and performance
song
• Andrew Godwin stated that it was important that for an
artist to be involved in the music video by performing or
acting out the role as the singer.
• This makes the song more realistic to the audience and it
helps the audience know the character of the artist. A
good example would be Lil Durk higher in this case he is
showing the fact that his life has turned around he is
more wealthy and a business man who now is able to get
girls party and have a nice penthouse view.
