How to insert your library into
the Mobile Sharing Economy
How to insert your library into the Mobile
Sharing Economy
• November 23 (12-1pm EST)
• Have you found the phenomena of Uber, Air-BNB, and Lyft just
amazing?
• Through this session we will talk about how to build a library environment
that leverages our patrons as a next level of literature. From leveraging &
building a larger book sharing model to tapping into our users to host various
in-house programs and services then expanding the network to allow
additional libraries to leverage all the in-house developed connections to
share with a larger patron base.
Agenda
• Ridesharing ”The Gateway Drug”
• Crowd Sourcing Content
• Determining Method of Delivery
• Who’s going to use it?
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug'
into the sharing economy
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
• Why is the Sharing Economy Booming right now?
• In a 2013 poll, 73% of Americans said they were dissatisfied with the
economy.
• More financially insecure since the 1970’s
• 85% worrying how they would pay their bills
• According to the APA a quarter of Americans said they don't trust the
companies they work for.
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
• A big window of opportunity for the peer-to-peer economy
• New type of economy could be much more beneficial for:
• part-time workers
• the unemployed
• stay-at-home parents
• people in the midst of job transitions
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
• Some Drivers of the Social Economy:
• Increase in peer-to-peer social networks
• Real-time technologies that fundamentally change the way we behave
• Pressing unresolved environmental concerns
• Global recession that fundamentally shocked consumer behaviors
Who has used a Share Service?
Lyft, AirBnb, Uber, etc…
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
• As a child, you were told not to speak to strangers.
• As an adult, you can share almost everything with strangers
• Cars
• Homes
• Bicycles
• Movies
• Music
• PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts, companies involved in the sharing
economy will increase global revenues from roughly $15 billion today
to about $335 billion by 2025.
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
Some examples of the sharing
economy include:
• Hospitality and Dining: CouchSurfing,
Airbnb, Feastly, LeftoverSwap
• Automotive and Transportation:
RelayRides, Hitch, Uber, Lyft,
Getaround, Sidecar
• Retail and Consumer Goods:
Neighborgoods, SnapGoods,
Poshmark, Tradesy
• Media and Entertainment: Amazon
Family Library, Wix, Spotify,
SoundCloud, Earbits
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
• Trust
• Convenience
• Sense of community
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
Ridesharing, the 'gateway drug' into the
sharing economy
• Thanks to consumer willingness
to try mobile apps, there are
lower barriers to entry when it
comes to building brands and
scaling up quickly—the
innovation clock is now set to
fast-pace, and will get even faster
as consumers become more
trusting of relationships tied to
social sentiment and
communities of users.

  1. Depending on who you ask, we can call it: "peer to peer sharing," "collaborative consumption,” Or even "collaborative production," We can even expand collaborative practices to include crowdfunding, microfinancing, or peer-to-peer lending.
  2. As a child, you were told not to speak to strangers, but as an adult, you can share almost everything with strangers: cars, homes, bicycles, movies, music, and more. It's called the sharing economy and this seemingly altruistic shift is big business. As PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts in its 2015 report, companies that adhere to the sharing economy's business model of access over ownership have the potential to increase global revenues from roughly $15 billion today to about $335 billion by 2025.
  3. Trust, Convenience, Sense of community are all factors in pushing adoption of the sharing economy forward.

  6. Re-assess retail space: Thanks largely to the shifting emphasis on experience, big and small brands alike are looking for flexibility in how they reach consumers. That means rethinking the channels they use—in particular, their physical footprint. Enter Storefront, a startup that enables retailers to set up pop-up shops or sell items in boutiques. The platform connects those who have shops or empty real estate in highly trafficked areas with merchants seeking to peddle their wares—in short, it’s an Airbnb for merchants, offering the benefits of both temporariness and uniqueness. Listings include full retail stores that can be used as popup shops as well as shelf space in boutiques, and locations range from neighborhood shops to subway stops to hotels. The flexibility that Storefront offers can be a boon to brands looking to dial up their experience or pitch new products. So far, more than 1,000 merchants have used the platform to open up shop in New York and San Francisco. And for those providing the space, it’s an ancillary revenue stream—on average, most retail spaces are closed for 15 hours per week, time that could be otherwise monetized through new platforms.
  7. The recession may be over in the United States, but the values that emerged during it appear to be staying put—and the sharing economy is giving new weight to the axiom “less is more.” 78% of consumers (PriceWaterHouse) surveyed agreed that the sharing economy reduces clutter and waste—millennials and households with kids most strongly agreed. These attitudes are a growing threat to a retail industry that is struggling to buoy its numbers—in December 2014, waning holiday sales led consumer purchases to decline 0.9%, despite economic growth and lower gasoline prices4 .
  8. Libraries have been leaders in demonstrating the value and potential for free/shared resources and spaces. As the sharing economy advances and moves in new directions – electronic devices, transportation, tools, education, equipment – the roles that libraries play as sharers may need to change and adapt. Libraries will need to see what they can do - and share - to stay relevant in the sharing economy and to meet the needs of people interested in sharing.
  9. According to a 2014 Nielsen survey of more than 30,000 internet users in sixty countries, 68% of consumers are willing to share or rent their personal items for payment and 66% of consumers are willing to use products and services from others. Respondents identified electronic devices (28%), power tools (23%), bicycles (22%), clothing (22%), household items (22%), sport equipment (22%), cars (21%), camping gear (28%), furniture (17%), and homes (15%) as the products they would be willing to share or rent for a fee and 26% of respondents also indicated a willingness to rent lessons or services. The sharing economy relies heavily on trust, which social technologies help advance through publicly shared feedback, reviews, comments, and connections.
  10. Appreciation and interest in the sharing economy may be generational. According to Nielsen’s survey, younger generations – 35% of Millennials and 7% of Generation Z – are more willing than older generations -  17% of Generation X and 7% of Baby Boomers – to use or rent products. This could mean renewed interest in the sharing value of libraries, but may require that libraries update the scope of services and programs available for sharing to keep up with interests of younger generations.  Cities and governments will likely see opportunities in the sharing economy to help improve the experiences of citizens (e.g. bike share programs).  Libraries may have the opportunity to align themselves with sharing economy services (repair cafes, garden sharing, work spaces) that promote social good.
