What is Parkinson’s disease?
Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease of the brain that impacts almost every aspect of daily living
including: movement, mood, speech, ability to smell, eating and drinking, sleep, and can cause cognitive
changes.
There is no known cure for Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson’s by the Numbers:
100,000 Canadians that have Parkinson’s disease
25+ Canadians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s everyday
50+ Canadians are expected to be diagnosed everyday with Parkinson’s by 2031
$120,358,000 is the annual direct healthcare cost in Canada for Parkinson’s
50 is the number of pills that many people with Parkinson’s have to take everyday to manage
their condition. Canadians with Parkinson’s have the highest rate of prescription drug use
compared to other neurological conditions.
What should Canada’s response be to the increasing numbers and impact of Parkinson’s and
other neurological conditions?
Commit to a Pan-Canadian Action Plan for the Brain that leads to:
Equitable access to affordable treatment options, including non-traditional therapies
such as exercise programs tailored to the needs of people with Parkinson’s
Improved recognition and support for caregivers
Enhanced income security for Canadians with disabilities
Increased investment in Parkinson’s disease and brain research
Eliminating genetic discrimination
Improved health care systems that are integrated
Increased access to specialists for accurate and timely diagnosis and management of
neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s
As my MP, you can do the following to show your support for a Pan-Canadian Action Plan for
the Brain:
Vote in favour of Bill S-201, An Act to prohibit and prevent genetic discrimination
Write a letter to CIHR about the need for more investment in brain research
Share your support and raise awareness by posting on social media about the need for a Pan-
Canadian Action Plan for the Brain
