The Remote Challenge: Agile Software Development with Distributed Teams
Distributed agile teams are nothing new, but now during the Corona pandemic nearly everyone is experiencing this remote challenge. Some teams are not well prepared for that challenge, and some might still believe that agile software development is for collocated teams only. The main reasoning for the doubts is that agile emphasizes face-to-face communication, which seems to contradict with a remote setting. In this session I want to focus on the following two questions: • What can agile teams can learn from working remotely? • And how can working remote be improved by focusing on agility? Renowned author, Jutta Eckstein, works as an independent coach, consultant, and trainer. She has helped many teams and organizations worldwide to make an Agile transition. She has a unique experience in applying Agile processes within medium-sized to large distributed mission-critical projects. Ten years ago, she published the very first book on Agile Software Development with Distributed Teams. Moreover, Jutta has also published Agile Software Development in the Large, Retrospectives for Organizational Change, and together with Johanna Rothman Diving for Hidden Treasures: Uncovering the Cost of Delay in your Project Portfolio. Just recently Jutta has pair-written with John Buck a book on Company-wide Agility. This book focuses on synthesizing Beyond Budgeting, Open Space, Sociocracy, and Agility. Jutta is a member of the Agile Alliance (having served the board of directors from 2003-2007) and a member of the program committee of many different American, Asian, and European conferences, where she has also presented her work. She holds a M.A. in Business Coaching & Change Management, a Dipl.Eng. in Product-Engineering, and a B.A. in Education.
