2. AUDIENCE RESEARCH
By conducting audience research I have found a range of useful information.
A large majority of the information that I have gathered will enable me to
hopefully create a product that is of high quality and liked by my target
audience, other information that I have gathered gave me an insight into the
demographic of my audience as well as their psychographics. A good source
of audience feedback that I have received is from my questionnaire, from this
I have been able to distinguish what is liked and not liked among my
audience, for example, the feedback gained from asking what is their
preferred sub-genre showed me that there are three types that are favoured
most. These being zombie horror, comedy horror and psychological horror. I
can now use this particular information to hopefully create a successful
product that is liked by my target audience. Other information that I have
gathered allowed me to get a good idea of what my target audience would be
expecting to see in my product, a large majority of the audience expectations
came from interviews that I conducted with my target audience. I can now use
this information to assist me in creating a successful product.
3. WHO IS MY TARGET AUDIENCE?
Looking at the research I have conducted (through the use of questionnaires,
a focus group and an interview), I found that my target audience are ABC1,
both male and female, and are aged 16-25 years. I also found that my
audience have a range of interests and hobbies such as, listening to music,
watching films, reading, and being sociable with friends.
This information can now be used to help me produce a successful media
product as I can create concepts around my target audience likes and
interests. I can also use the information that I have gathered through
audience research to create a product that is more favoured by my target
audience and by doing so I should be able to create a product that is both
successful and enjoyable to watch.
4. RELATIONSHIP WITH THE GENRE AND
EXPECTATIONS OF FORM
My chosen genre is horror. Looking at the results I have gathered through my audience
research I have found that the most preferred sub genres of horror are zombie horror, comedy
horror and psychological horrors. I also found that my target audience like the thrill and rush
of adrenaline they feel as they watch horror films and trailers and it is this reason that they
continue to watch the film. I can use this information to help produce a product that keeps the
interest of the audience.
Through my audience research I found that there is a range of expectations from my target
audience, the most important being a compelling story. Other expectations are things such as
a range of props i.e. weapons and tools. I also found that my audience expect to see a
believable setting. In terms of sound my target audience would expect to hear high pitch
sounds such as screaming, they would also expect to hear non diegetic sound as I found out
in my interviews. As a means of progressing the story line the use of fast paced, continuity
editing was suggested in my interviews, this would enable me to create a flowing film trailer
that does – to an extent – make sense. The forms of camerawork that were also suggested
are shots such as “over shoulder shot, as they build emphasis” ad close ups. All this
information that I have gathered shows that a large majority of the people that took part in
completing interviews do have a good idea of what components are used in the genre and
also have many expectations.
In terms of form I have found that my audience would expect to see the common layout of a
film trailer. The usual layout is a certificate rating of the film followed by the logos of the
production companies connected to the product, this would then be followed by the trailer
itself which would have the movie title within as well as a few inserts to help make the footage
more understandable, the end of the trailer would then have a release date so as the
audience know when it is released to the public.
