Caring Communication: “Getting to Know You”
Caritas in Action
How Caring Science informs and inspires KP caregivers and affirms our commitment to provide our
patients and their families exceptional care
Caring Communication: “Getting to Know You”
Intent to Contribute Statement:
In our desire and commitment to instill the Caring Science into our nursing culture and our goal to
deliver World Class Care to our Members, the Redwood City Perioperative team has developed a
nursing communication tool. To help build and sustain trusting, authentic relationships between
our Redwood City Medical staff, patients, and their families. The “Getting to Know You”, survey
tool was developed, so that our patient’s may share information about themselves, such as the
name of their pet, favorite television show, favorite sport, hobby, or maybe that they have a
daughter or son in collage. The survey is filled out in the Preoperative Unit and the information is
kept in the patient’s medical record. The survey then follows the patient through perioperative
services to their room, where with permission, it is then placed on the patients care
board, ensuring the information is easily accessible to all medical staff. At each point of contact the
information is available to the staff so they can make a genuine connection with their patient.
When rounding the Surgeon may choose to discuss the patient’s golf stroke; the nurse may choose
to talk about how they too have a small dog, or like the same TV show. The survey allows for
authentic conversation and allows us to honor and appreciate the uniqueness of each patient.
