Intent to Contribute Statement:
The inpatient setting can be an isolating place for many patients. The unit may be bustling with
activity but many are separated from their loved ones while in the hospital. Sometimes illness even
befalls a person at a special time of the year, like on ones birthday. At Modesto Medical Center we
have taken this opportunity to make our members feel special and cared for in a way they may not
have anticipated on their special day. In HealthConnect, on the patients snapshot, the birthdate
will say "Today" with an icon of a birthday cake with candles. This alerts the nurse that it is the
patients birthday and she sets some things into motion. She orders a lovely Birthday cupcake from
the cafeteria (if appropriate for the diet of the patient,) a birthday balloon from the gift shop, and
fills out a birthday card from the staff. If possible, she may even gather staff to sing "happy
birthday" to the patient. All of these little things come together to make an unexpected and big
impact on the patient, letting them know that we care.
