Dear Friends,
As this year draws to a close, I am proud to say that St. Francis has delivered on
its promise to bring world-class health care to Columbus with the opening of the
new two-story St. Francis Women’s Hospital in October. Women now have access to
all women’s services in one first-class facility on the hospital’s main campus. In fact,
President and CEO Robert Granger commented that a woman can see her doctor,
get a mammogram or deliver a baby all at one convenient location.
On October 22, Natalie Tooley was the first baby born in the Women’s Hospital’s
state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit. Her mother, Christy Tooley, chose St. Francis
because of the hospital’s excellent reputation for service and rated her experience
a perfect“10.”She and husband Nathan were particularly impressed by how the
staff catered to their every need and request. She described her experience and the
beautiful, calm environment as more like a hotel stay than a hospital visit.
Equally exciting as babies coming to St. Francis is the recent announcement
that St. Francis is the first Mayo Clinic Care Network member in Georgia. The new
collaboration enables St. Francis physicians to access the latest Mayo Clinic expertise
and clinical care resources via electronic reference and communication tools. For you
and your family, it means that you will gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic expertise
without having to travel outside the area. Your physician will be able to consult with
a Mayo expert at no cost to you.
To become a care network member, St. Francis underwent a thorough evaluation
of the hospital’s quality, service and operational criteria. Then, Mayo invited St. Francis
to join its network due, in part, to the commitment St. Francis shares with Mayo Clinic
of improving health care delivery. We know they also appreciated our beautiful new
facilities and the collaborative relationships between hospital administrators and
physicians, which have never been stronger.
We are very fortunate at St. Francis to have the involvement of our physicians,
which has made our hospital better and stronger. Without their support, we could
not have come as far as we have this year, opening a new Heart Hospital, a new
Women’s Hospital and establishing this new collaboration with Mayo.
As I complete my last year as chairman of our board, I want to thank our physicians,
our administrative team and my fellow board members for all they have done to help
us move toward greater excellence. It has been a pleasure and honor to work with
such an excellent team and see our vision become a reality, the vision of bringing
higher quality care to you, your family and our community.
Sincerely,
Thomas B. Buck III

“We are equipped to handle any newborn
emergency, including babies who arrive prior to term
unless they require a higher level of care or have
needs requiring prolonged hospitalization,”says
Dr. Cason.
The labor and delivery unit officially opened
November 1, marking the final step of consolidating
all women’s services onto St. Francis’main campus.
“We can now provide a wide range of women’s
services in one physical location,”says Robert
Granger, St. Francis president and CEO. “You can
get a mammogram, see your physician or have a
baby in one place.”

promise of a first-class, family-centered
delivery experience with the October
22 arrival of Natalie Tooley, the first baby born at
St. Francis since 1981. The six-pound, 14-ounce baby
girl is Christy and Nathan Tooley’s daughter. Christy
chose St. Francis because of the hospital’s reputation
for excellent service.
“This is the Ritz Carlton of labor facilities. It’s beautiful.
My experience has been more like a hotel stay than a
hospital visit,”says Christy.“They did everything possible
to accommodate our special requests. I felt like my
birthing experience was my experience. I got to have
a say in every stage of labor. ”
“The staff catered to all our needs,”says Nathan, a
Columbus police officer.“The cleanliness is top-notch,
and I feel really good about security.”
Nathan learned first-hand about the unit’s security
while changing Natalie’s diaper. Her leg band came off,
setting off the alarm, bringing staff members quickly to
the couple’s room. The new father also learned ways
he could help Christy with their new baby.“This is the
most amazing place in the world,”he said.
“Education is a primary focus of our new labor and
delivery unit,”says Ashley Ingram, RN, administrative
director of Women’s Services.“We strive to fully educate
new mothers and fathers about what to expect before
and after their baby’s birth.”
The Women’s Hospital offers classes on child birth,
both at the hospital and online. The hospital also offers
a breastfeeding class and one for siblings, too.
A team of highly experienced and skilled
clinicians, including neonatologist/pediatrician Dana
Cason, MD, care for the babies delivered in the
new unit. Dr. Cason performs in-room newborn
examinations and provides newborn care the first
48 hours following birth.
The labor and delivery unit features two dedicated
operating suites; neonatal nurse practitioner coverage
for newborns; around-the-clock staff pediatrician;
couplet care; lactation consultant; audiologist; and full
service newborn screenings. It is also equipped with
newborn ventilators, oxygen monitors, lab services
and x-ray equipment in case of an emergency.

St.Francis Becomes the
First Georgia Hospital to Join the
Mayo Clinic Care Network
6 Spirit of St.Francis Spirit of St.Francis 7
You and your family can now gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic
expertise close to home as the result of a new collaborative
relationship between St. Francis and Mayo Clinic.
n November, St. Francis became the first
hospital in Georgia and one of 24 in the
nation to become a member of the
Mayo Clinic Care Network. Through
the network relationship, St. Francis physicians can
access the latest Mayo Clinic expertise and clinical
care resources via electronic care reference and
communication tools.
“As part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, our
physicians will be able to reach out to Mayo Clinic
specialists as they consider their patients’ care,” said
Robert Granger, St. Francis president and CEO. “This
collaboration continues St. Francis' commitment to
do what is best for health care in our community.
It will enhance patient care for Columbus and
Chattahoochee Valley residents.”
From Mayo’s perspective, collaborating with
members through the network enhances their mission
of sharing knowledge and expertise.
“We have always talked with physicians who
call from outside our system, but through the network,
St. Francis physicians can, with their patient’s approval,
connect with a Mayo Clinic specialist electronically
to consult on complex issues and share pertinent
medical information,” said Dr. Stephen Lange,
Southeast medical director of the Mayo Clinic Care
Network. “The specialist then reviews the physician’s
question and information and responds directly
through the medical record. This level of collaboration
enhances the delivery of care. We hope that it
provides greater peace of mind. We know that it
often helps patients stay closer to home and avoid
unnecessary travel.”
St. Francis was invited to join the Mayo Clinic
Care Network after a thorough evaluation of its
quality, service and operational criteria. As part of this
evaluation, a Mayo Clinic team toured the hospital and
talked with clinical and administrative staff to assess
the hospital’s culture and safety protocols. The visit
confirmed the commitment St. Francis shares with
Mayo Clinic to improve health care delivery. St. Francis’
membership is a direct result of its culture and
dedication to providing compassionate patient care.
Reviewers were also impressed with the relationship
between physicians and administrators.
“We see the partnership between physicians
and the administrative team as one of St. Francis’ top
strengths,” said Bob Walters, a Mayo administrator and
one of the reviewers. “The new facilities are another
strength. We feel that the physical environment has
significant impact on patients and staff.”
The network relationship will not only benefit
today’s patients but those in the future.
“In the future, new knowledge will grow
exponentially. Collaborating to share and manage
knowledge will ensure that every patient gets the
best care,” said Dr. Lange. “St. Francis is an outstanding
institution that will become even more effective
through collaboration.”
Dr. Luther “Butch” Wolff, a surgeon at the St. Francis
Center for Surgical Care, agrees. Dr. Wolff, who trained
at Mayo Clinic, was part of the St. Francis team that
traveled to Mayo’s Jacksonville, Fla. campus to discuss
the care network and the potential new relationship.
“Working with Mayo is an eye-opening
experience. They are the most efficient people you’ve
ever seen, both very professional and knowledge-
able,” said Dr. Wolff. “I think this is an outstanding
opportunity for us at St. Francis to parlay what we
have into something even greater.”

FUTUREThe soaring three-story atrium and lobby in the new Butler Pavilion links St. Francis’ Heart
Hospital and Women’s Hospital. That fact is particularly significant to donors Jim and Leslie Jordan
for whom the space is named.
Jim is very familiar with the Heart Hospital’s services since his pacemaker was implanted at
St. Francis. He also had colon cancer surgery at St. Francis. He remembers the nurses started clapping
and cheering when test results showed the cancer had not spread. “It dawned on me right then that
these people are more than just providing health care. They are really caring individuals,” he recalls.
Leslie has her own reasons for supporting the adjacent Women’s Hospital. She has five grand-
daughters. Two great granddaughters were born before the new hospital opened but she hopes to
see more great grandchildren born in the new building. St. Francis expects between 1,500 and 2,000
deliveries during the first year.
She also has a long-time family connection to St. Francis. The last visit with her father, Harold
“Hod” Williams, before his death in 1983 was while he was hospitalized there. “There are great people
up there,” Leslie says.
The Jordans have been long-time contributors to St. Francis but not to any particular project.
However, when they met with the planning group for the new hospital, they were soon caught up
in the spirit of the $110 million expansion project and made it their primary donation. Both were
impressed with the number of donors and particularly the support from the hospital’s doctors.
The couple attended the Butler Pavilion dedication in October and were awed by the facility.
The 96,000-square-foot Heart Hospital includes four cardiac catheterization labs, 30 prep and
recovery bays, 16-bed intensive-care unit, 43-bed private room unit and eight observation beds. Jim
points out that the high-tech equipment can be moved to the patient instead of the patient being
taken to the machine.
Leslie is impressed that in the new Women’s Hospital moms have a whirlpool in the bathroom
and can have a bedside massage, the result of a partnership with Sunday’s Day Spa. The labor and
delivery unit offers mother-baby suites to enhance bonding between mothers and their new babies.
The Center for Breast Health includes the latest digital screening and diagnostic mammography.
Jim summed up their delight in being able to support the construction of the additions: “Down the
road it’s good to know we can do something to preserve the high quality of care at St. Francis.”

Honoring Dr. J. Bruce Carr
As Columbus’ first nephrologist, Dr. J. Bruce Carr is credited with bringing dialysis
and innovations in critical care to Columbus. During his 38 years of practicing
medicine, he exemplified excellence, compassion and leadership in patient care
as did Dr. Clarence C. Butler. For these reasons, he will be honored at the 10th annual
Dr. Clarence C. Butler Service and Leadership Award gala on February 4.
The gala will feature lighthearted entertainment by actor, director, producer
and author Henry Winkler, best known for his role as “Fonzie” in the
1970s sitcom, “Happy Days.”
Compassionate Leader
As chief of critical care at St. Francis Hospital from
2004-2013, Dr. Carr demonstrated a keen ability to
establish a deep level of trust and rapport with patients
and families facing life and death decisions. He helped
them make good decisions, and his involvement provided
assurance that their loved ones were receiving the best
possible care.
“He was always compassionate with patients and
their families,”says Dr. Mark Fortson.
“Throughout his medical career, Bruce was an
advocate for appropriate aggressive medical therapy, yet
had keen insight when it was prolonging suffering versus
healing the patient,”says Dr. David White.“His perspective
made our community a better place.”
In July 2011, Dr. Carr was recognized by the Dialysis
Clinic with the organization’s Pioneer Award for bringing
dialysis to the community, having helped establish the
area’s first outpatient dialysis clinic.
Throughout his career at St. Francis, he constantly
strived to improve patient care. He championed a project
to prevent central line-associated blood stream infection
and was recognized by the Institute for Healthcare
Improvement for developing two joint algorithms
to optimize glycemic control and reduce the risk of
hypoglycemia. Dr. Carr invested substantial time in
teaching and mentoring fellow physicians and nurses.
He has also served on St. Francis’Ethics Committee.
Guest Speaker Henry Winkler
Henry Winkler is best known for his role as Fonzie
in the 1970s American sitcom Happy Days. A leather-clad
greaser and auto mechanic, The Fonz started out as a
minor character, but achieved top billing by the show’s
end. Winkler’s portrayal of The Fonz earned him two
consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a
Comedy Series.
Winkler’s film and television credits include Fox’s
highly acclaimed series, Arrested Development; NBC’s
Third Watch and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and ABC’s
The Practice for which he received an Emmy nomination
for outstanding actor. Currently, he plays hospital adminis-
trator Sy Mittleman on the satirical comedy, Children’s
Hospital. Behind the scenes, Winkler has produced more
than 20 television series and specials, including MacGyver,
A Family Again and the ABC documentary, Who Are the
DeBolts and Where Did They Get 19 Kids?, which won the
prestigious Humanitas Prize.
In 2003, he began writing a series of children’s
novels with Lin Oliver, entitled Hank Zipzer: The World’s
Greatest Under-Achiever, which have appeared on The
New York Times Best Seller list. In 2012, Winkler released
the first installment of a new series entitled
Ghost Buddy #1: Zero to Hero.

GHA Recognizes St. Francis Among
Safety Leaders ‘Elite Circle’
St. Francis has been named to the Georgia Hospital
Association’s (GHA) Hospital Engagement Network
(HEN) Safety Leaders Circle for the hospital’s patient
care improvements during the second quarter of 2013.
St. Francis was one of only 31 Georgia hospitals to
place among those in the Elite Circle, the highest level
of recognition.
St. Francis participates in the GHA HEN, an initiative
begun last year as part of the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Service’s (CMS) Partnership for Patients.
Through its Partnership for Health and Accountability
(PHA), GHA is one of 26 organizations nationally
to receive federal funding to coordinate the
implementation of a series of hospital improvement
projects. These projects aim to reduce hospital-acquired
conditions (HAC) by 40 percent and hospital readmis-
sions by 20 percent by year-end 2013. According to
GHA data, Georgia hospitals have prevented almost
9,300 incidents of harm, saving between $59 million
and $63 million.
To achieve these goals, CMS focuses on major
directives in 10 areas. Four of these areas are related
to hospital-acquired infections (HAI); four are related
to HACs; one is related to obstetrics (OB) and eliminating
elective deliveries before 39 weeks; and the last is relat-
ed to transition of care and reduction of readmissions.
As part of their participation in the GHA HEN, hospitals
selected two of these areas to focus on in 2012. Scores
for the Safety Leaders Circle are based on several
criteria, including a database that measures hospitals’
improvement in their respective selected areas.
“Thanks to the leadership and commitment of
St. Francis, we have made great progress in achieving
the significant life-saving goals of this important
initiative,”said Earl Rogers, GHA president.
Formed in January 2000 and sponsored by GHA,
PHA is a statewide collaborative that brings together
health care providers with community agencies and
individuals to achieve healthy communities.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia awarded
Blue Distinction-Specialty Care Program for Cardiac
Care to St. Francis in August. The hospital’s cardiac
program met the criteria for Blue Distinction in
these areas:
• Cardiac Surgery Outcomes (STS)
• PCI Outcomes (NCDR and CathPCI)
• Hospital Quality and Safety Outcomes
(TJC, NQF, HCAHPS, CMS, GWTG, NDNQI)
• Cardiac Process/Structure
Hospital Quality and Safety Process/Structure
Research shows that Blue Distinction Centers
demonstrate improved patient outcomes, including
lower rates of complications following certain cardiac
procedures and lower rates of health care-associated
infections as compared with their peers.

New Noteworthy
Center for Cardiac Care
The St.Francis Center for Breast Health
is the first facility in Georgia to offer Automated
Breast Ultrasound (ABUS). ABUS offers more
detailed imaging for detecting breast cancer
in women with dense breast tissue. Forty
percent of women have dense breasts, and
cancer is four to six times more likely to occur
in these women. Cancer in women with
dense breast tissue can be difficult to detect
with mammography alone.
The Center for Breast Health is accredited
by the American College of Radiology.
It is staffed by an experienced team of
board-certified physicians, registered
mammographers, sonographers and a
certified breast health navigator. For an
appointment, call 706-257-7700.
St.Francis Receives 2013-14
Consumer Choice Award
For the ninth consecutive year, area consumers
have chosen St. Francis Hospital as the area’s“Consumer
Hospital of Choice,”according to data compiled by
National Research Corporation (NRC). The award identi-
fies hospitals that health care consumers have selected
as having the highest quality and image in more than
300 markets throughout the United States. The award
was announced October 21 in“Modern Healthcare.”
Winners are determined by consumer perceptions
on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the
company’s Ticker survey. The NRC study surveys more
than 250,000 consumers in the contiguous 48 states
and the District of Columbia and is the nation’s largest
and most comprehensive study of its kind. The
study has a margin of error of + or – 0.2 percent
at a national level.
St. Francis Achieves
Advanced Primary Stroke
Center Re-certification
St. Francis received re-certification as an
Advanced Primary Stroke Center September 26,
following a Joint Commission Survey. Certification
will last two years. Surveyors evaluated all aspects
of stroke care at St. Francis, visiting the hospital’s
Emergency Department (ED), ICU and 3 North.
Only one requirement for improvement was cited.
Surveyors noted these best practices related to
stroke care at St. Francis:
• Senior leaders at the opening session showed
ownership of stroke care.
• The ED staff was well aware of all of the rapidly
changing protocols implemented in the ED.
• The stroke patient education booklet with
the perforated patient perception of care
survey is innovative.
• A strong commitment to community stroke
education was evident.
• The biggest best practice was the staff. They
were comfortable talking with the surveyor,
and their depth of knowledge regarding
strokes was exceptional.
Sleep Lab Earns Accreditation
The St. Francis Sleep Disorders Lab earned
accreditation by the American Association of Sleep
Medicine (AASM) in October. AASM accreditation is the
gold standard for evaluating sleep medicine services.
Achieving AASM’s standards for accreditation ensure the
medical community and the public that a sleep medicine
provider demonstrates and maintains proficiency in testing
procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and
physician and staff training. AASM accreditation reflects
St. Francis’commitment to ensure that sleep disorders
patients receive the highest quality of care.
St. Francis Earns Total Hip and Knee
Replacement Re-certifications
St. Francis earned Joint Commission (JC) disease-
specific re-certifications in both total hip and knee
replacement in September. JC surveyors had no
findings for St. Francis’total knee program and only one
for the total hip program while evaluating the hospital’s
protocols and processes September 20. Surveyors were
particularly impressed by patient outcomes as well
as innovative approaches to care. JC certification is the
gold seal of approval for total
hip and knee replacement.

Bruce Carr Caring Contributors Jordan’s Gift Links Past With Future Cover photo by Holly Tye | hollytye.com Dear Friends, As this year draws to a close, I am proud to say that St. Francis has delivered on its promise to bring world-class health care to Columbus with the opening of the new two-story St. Francis Women’s Hospital in October. Women now have access to all women’s services in one first-class facility on the hospital’s main campus. In fact, President and CEO Robert Granger commented that a woman can see her doctor, get a mammogram or deliver a baby all at one convenient location. On October 22, Natalie Tooley was the first baby born in the Women’s Hospital’s state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit. Her mother, Christy Tooley, chose St. Francis because of the hospital’s excellent reputation for service and rated her experience a perfect“10.”She and husband Nathan were particularly impressed by how the staff catered to their every need and request. She described her experience and the beautiful, calm environment as more like a hotel stay than a hospital visit. Equally exciting as babies coming to St. Francis is the recent announcement that St. Francis is the first Mayo Clinic Care Network member in Georgia. The new collaboration enables St. Francis physicians to access the latest Mayo Clinic expertise and clinical care resources via electronic reference and communication tools. For you and your family, it means that you will gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic expertise without having to travel outside the area. Your physician will be able to consult with a Mayo expert at no cost to you. To become a care network member, St. Francis underwent a thorough evaluation of the hospital’s quality, service and operational criteria. Then, Mayo invited St. Francis to join its network due, in part, to the commitment St. Francis shares with Mayo Clinic of improving health care delivery. We know they also appreciated our beautiful new facilities and the collaborative relationships between hospital administrators and physicians, which have never been stronger. We are very fortunate at St. Francis to have the involvement of our physicians, which has made our hospital better and stronger. Without their support, we could not have come as far as we have this year, opening a new Heart Hospital, a new Women’s Hospital and establishing this new collaboration with Mayo. As I complete my last year as chairman of our board, I want to thank our physicians, our administrative team and my fellow board members for all they have done to help us move toward greater excellence. It has been a pleasure and honor to work with such an excellent team and see our vision become a reality, the vision of bringing higher quality care to you, your family and our community. Sincerely, Thomas B. Ashley presented Kristy with a special gift basket from St. Francis to mark the first baby’s birth. By Karen Johnson “We are equipped to handle any newborn emergency, including babies who arrive prior to term unless they require a higher level of care or have needs requiring prolonged hospitalization,”says Dr. Cason. The labor and delivery unit officially opened November 1, marking the final step of consolidating all women’s services onto St. Francis’main campus. “We can now provide a wide range of women’s services in one physical location,”says Robert Granger, St. Francis president and CEO. “You can get a mammogram, see your physician or have a baby in one place.” The labor and delivery unit, along with the St. Francis Elena Diaz-Verson Amos Center for Breast Health, St. Francis OB/GYN Associates and St. Francis OB/GYN Physician Partners make up the Women’s Hospital. Neonatologist Dana Cason, MD, examines newborns in the labor and delivery unit’s mother-and-baby suites. he St. Francis Women’s Hospital labor and delivery team delivered on the promise of a first-class, family-centered delivery experience with the October 22 arrival of Natalie Tooley, the first baby born at St. Francis since 1981. The six-pound, 14-ounce baby girl is Christy and Nathan Tooley’s daughter. Christy chose St. Francis because of the hospital’s reputation for excellent service. “This is the Ritz Carlton of labor facilities. It’s beautiful. My experience has been more like a hotel stay than a hospital visit,”says Christy.“They did everything possible to accommodate our special requests. I felt like my birthing experience was my experience. I got to have a say in every stage of labor. ” “The staff catered to all our needs,”says Nathan, a Columbus police officer.“The cleanliness is top-notch, and I feel really good about security.” Nathan learned first-hand about the unit’s security while changing Natalie’s diaper. Her leg band came off, setting off the alarm, bringing staff members quickly to the couple’s room. The new father also learned ways he could help Christy with their new baby.“This is the most amazing place in the world,”he said. “Education is a primary focus of our new labor and delivery unit,”says Ashley Ingram, RN, administrative director of Women’s Services.“We strive to fully educate new mothers and fathers about what to expect before and after their baby’s birth.” The Women’s Hospital offers classes on child birth, both at the hospital and online. The hospital also offers a breastfeeding class and one for siblings, too. A team of highly experienced and skilled clinicians, including neonatologist/pediatrician Dana Cason, MD, care for the babies delivered in the new unit. Dr. Cason performs in-room newborn examinations and provides newborn care the first 48 hours following birth. The labor and delivery unit features two dedicated operating suites; neonatal nurse practitioner coverage for newborns; around-the-clock staff pediatrician; couplet care; lactation consultant; audiologist; and full service newborn screenings. It is also equipped with newborn ventilators, oxygen monitors, lab services and x-ray equipment in case of an emergency. T Arrives First-Class at NewWomen’s HospitalFirstBaby

  • 5. St.Francis Becomes the First Georgia Hospital to Join the Mayo Clinic Care Network 6 Spirit of St.Francis Spirit of St.Francis 7 You and your family can now gain the benefits of Mayo Clinic expertise close to home as the result of a new collaborative relationship between St. Francis and Mayo Clinic. n November, St. Francis became the first hospital in Georgia and one of 24 in the nation to become a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. Through the network relationship, St. Francis physicians can access the latest Mayo Clinic expertise and clinical care resources via electronic care reference and communication tools. “As part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, our physicians will be able to reach out to Mayo Clinic specialists as they consider their patients’ care,” said Robert Granger, St. Francis president and CEO. “This collaboration continues St. Francis' commitment to do what is best for health care in our community. It will enhance patient care for Columbus and Chattahoochee Valley residents.” From Mayo’s perspective, collaborating with members through the network enhances their mission of sharing knowledge and expertise. “We have always talked with physicians who call from outside our system, but through the network, St. Francis physicians can, with their patient’s approval, connect with a Mayo Clinic specialist electronically to consult on complex issues and share pertinent medical information,” said Dr. Stephen Lange, Southeast medical director of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. “The specialist then reviews the physician’s question and information and responds directly through the medical record. This level of collaboration enhances the delivery of care. We hope that it provides greater peace of mind. We know that it often helps patients stay closer to home and avoid unnecessary travel.” St. Francis was invited to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network after a thorough evaluation of its quality, service and operational criteria. As part of this evaluation, a Mayo Clinic team toured the hospital and talked with clinical and administrative staff to assess the hospital’s culture and safety protocols. The visit confirmed the commitment St. Francis shares with Mayo Clinic to improve health care delivery. St. Francis’ membership is a direct result of its culture and dedication to providing compassionate patient care. Reviewers were also impressed with the relationship between physicians and administrators. “We see the partnership between physicians and the administrative team as one of St. Francis’ top strengths,” said Bob Walters, a Mayo administrator and one of the reviewers. “The new facilities are another strength. We feel that the physical environment has significant impact on patients and staff.” The network relationship will not only benefit today’s patients but those in the future. “In the future, new knowledge will grow exponentially. Collaborating to share and manage knowledge will ensure that every patient gets the best care,” said Dr. Lange. “St. Francis is an outstanding institution that will become even more effective through collaboration.” Dr. Luther “Butch” Wolff, a surgeon at the St. Francis Center for Surgical Care, agrees. Dr. Wolff, who trained at Mayo Clinic, was part of the St. Francis team that traveled to Mayo’s Jacksonville, Fla. campus to discuss the care network and the potential new relationship. “Working with Mayo is an eye-opening experience. They are the most efficient people you’ve ever seen, both very professional and knowledge- able,” said Dr. Wolff. “I think this is an outstanding opportunity for us at St. Francis to parlay what we have into something even greater.” I By Karen Johnson For more information about the Mayo Clinic Care Network relationship, visit www.wecareforlife.com/mayo. • 6. 8 Spirit of St.Francis Spirit of St.Francis 9 Jordan Gift Links P o w e r o f P a r t n e r s h i p PASTAND FUTUREThe soaring three-story atrium and lobby in the new Butler Pavilion links St. Francis’ Heart Hospital and Women’s Hospital. That fact is particularly significant to donors Jim and Leslie Jordan for whom the space is named. Jim is very familiar with the Heart Hospital’s services since his pacemaker was implanted at St. Francis. He also had colon cancer surgery at St. Francis. He remembers the nurses started clapping and cheering when test results showed the cancer had not spread. “It dawned on me right then that these people are more than just providing health care. They are really caring individuals,” he recalls. Leslie has her own reasons for supporting the adjacent Women’s Hospital. She has five grand- daughters. Two great granddaughters were born before the new hospital opened but she hopes to see more great grandchildren born in the new building. St. Francis expects between 1,500 and 2,000 deliveries during the first year. She also has a long-time family connection to St. Francis. The last visit with her father, Harold “Hod” Williams, before his death in 1983 was while he was hospitalized there. “There are great people up there,” Leslie says. The Jordans have been long-time contributors to St. Francis but not to any particular project. However, when they met with the planning group for the new hospital, they were soon caught up in the spirit of the $110 million expansion project and made it their primary donation. Both were impressed with the number of donors and particularly the support from the hospital’s doctors. The couple attended the Butler Pavilion dedication in October and were awed by the facility. The 96,000-square-foot Heart Hospital includes four cardiac catheterization labs, 30 prep and recovery bays, 16-bed intensive-care unit, 43-bed private room unit and eight observation beds. Jim points out that the high-tech equipment can be moved to the patient instead of the patient being taken to the machine. Leslie is impressed that in the new Women’s Hospital moms have a whirlpool in the bathroom and can have a bedside massage, the result of a partnership with Sunday’s Day Spa. The labor and delivery unit offers mother-baby suites to enhance bonding between mothers and their new babies. The Center for Breast Health includes the latest digital screening and diagnostic mammography. Jim summed up their delight in being able to support the construction of the additions: “Down the road it’s good to know we can do something to preserve the high quality of care at St. Francis.” Jim and Leslie Jordan By Borden Black

During his 38 years of practicing medicine, he exemplified excellence, compassion and leadership in patient care as did Dr. Clarence C. Butler. For these reasons, he will be honored at the 10th annual Dr. Clarence C. Butler Service and Leadership Award gala on February 4. The gala will feature lighthearted entertainment by actor, director, producer and author Henry Winkler, best known for his role as “Fonzie” in the 1970s sitcom, “Happy Days.” Compassionate Leader As chief of critical care at St. Francis Hospital from 2004-2013, Dr. Carr demonstrated a keen ability to establish a deep level of trust and rapport with patients and families facing life and death decisions. He helped them make good decisions, and his involvement provided assurance that their loved ones were receiving the best possible care. “He was always compassionate with patients and their families,”says Dr. Mark Fortson. “Throughout his medical career, Bruce was an advocate for appropriate aggressive medical therapy, yet had keen insight when it was prolonging suffering versus healing the patient,”says Dr. David White.“His perspective made our community a better place.” In July 2011, Dr. Carr was recognized by the Dialysis Clinic with the organization’s Pioneer Award for bringing dialysis to the community, having helped establish the area’s first outpatient dialysis clinic. Throughout his career at St. Francis, he constantly strived to improve patient care. He championed a project to prevent central line-associated blood stream infection and was recognized by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement for developing two joint algorithms to optimize glycemic control and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. Dr. Carr invested substantial time in teaching and mentoring fellow physicians and nurses. He has also served on St. Francis’Ethics Committee. Guest Speaker Henry Winkler Henry Winkler is best known for his role as Fonzie in the 1970s American sitcom Happy Days. A leather-clad greaser and auto mechanic, The Fonz started out as a minor character, but achieved top billing by the show’s end. Winkler’s portrayal of The Fonz earned him two consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. Winkler’s film and television credits include Fox’s highly acclaimed series, Arrested Development; NBC’s Third Watch and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and ABC’s The Practice for which he received an Emmy nomination for outstanding actor. Currently, he plays hospital adminis- trator Sy Mittleman on the satirical comedy, Children’s Hospital. Behind the scenes, Winkler has produced more than 20 television series and specials, including MacGyver, A Family Again and the ABC documentary, Who Are the DeBolts and Where Did They Get 19 Kids?, which won the prestigious Humanitas Prize. In 2003, he began writing a series of children’s novels with Lin Oliver, entitled Hank Zipzer: The World’s Greatest Under-Achiever, which have appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list. In 2012, Winkler released the first installment of a new series entitled Ghost Buddy #1: Zero to Hero. Dr. Steve Beaty examines a child’s eyes during a free eye clinic at The Mater Dei Hospital in Zimbabwe. Dr. Stephen Beaty Receives GHA Hospital Hero Award Dr. Stephen Beaty received a 2013 Georgia Hospital Association Hospital Hero Award on December 10. He is one of 10 Georgia physicians to receive the award this year. Dr. Beaty received the award for a lifetime of serving the poor around the world, including Honduras, Mexico, South Africa, Jamaica, India, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe, where the average income is $268 per year, 250,000 people suffer from preventable blindness. Since 1991, Dr. Beaty has reached out to care for the people of Zimbabwe for several months a year and lived there with his family from 2000-2004. He continues to conduct free eye camps and clinics in rural villages and cities in southern Zimbabwe and has performed thousands of free surgeries to help people see and work again. Additionally, he has trained Zimbabwean physicians and nurses in ophthalmologic and other medical skills. Over the years, he has built relationships throughout the medical community in southern Zimbabwe and is helping rebuild the nation’s health care system, which collapsed in 2008 due to the economy. During the past year, Dr. Beaty helped establish a sister hospital relationship between St. Francis and The Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second largest city. Last May, he led St. Francis’first sister hospital team to visit The Mater Dei and surrounding area where they trained Zimbawean doctors and nurses at The Mater Dei and two government hospitals, held a rural eye camp, offered a free eye clinic and taught a citywide trauma course. Dr. Beaty has practiced ophthalmology in Columbus since 1987. He has been a partner at West Georgia Eye Care Center since 2004, and has served as chief of Ophthalmology at St. Francis since 2005. GHA Recognizes St. Francis Among Safety Leaders ‘Elite Circle’ St. Francis has been named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s (GHA) Hospital Engagement Network (HEN) Safety Leaders Circle for the hospital’s patient care improvements during the second quarter of 2013. St. Francis was one of only 31 Georgia hospitals to place among those in the Elite Circle, the highest level of recognition. St. Francis participates in the GHA HEN, an initiative begun last year as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service’s (CMS) Partnership for Patients. Through its Partnership for Health and Accountability (PHA), GHA is one of 26 organizations nationally to receive federal funding to coordinate the implementation of a series of hospital improvement projects. These projects aim to reduce hospital-acquired conditions (HAC) by 40 percent and hospital readmis- sions by 20 percent by year-end 2013. According to GHA data, Georgia hospitals have prevented almost 9,300 incidents of harm, saving between $59 million and $63 million. To achieve these goals, CMS focuses on major directives in 10 areas. Four of these areas are related to hospital-acquired infections (HAI); four are related to HACs; one is related to obstetrics (OB) and eliminating elective deliveries before 39 weeks; and the last is relat- ed to transition of care and reduction of readmissions. As part of their participation in the GHA HEN, hospitals selected two of these areas to focus on in 2012. Scores for the Safety Leaders Circle are based on several criteria, including a database that measures hospitals’ improvement in their respective selected areas. “Thanks to the leadership and commitment of St. Francis, we have made great progress in achieving the significant life-saving goals of this important initiative,”said Earl Rogers, GHA president. Formed in January 2000 and sponsored by GHA, PHA is a statewide collaborative that brings together health care providers with community agencies and individuals to achieve healthy communities.
  • 10. St.Francis’ Cardiac Care Earns ‘Blue Distinction’ Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia awarded Blue Distinction-Specialty Care Program for Cardiac Care to St. Francis in August. The hospital’s cardiac program met the criteria for Blue Distinction in these areas: • Cardiac Surgery Outcomes (STS) • PCI Outcomes (NCDR and CathPCI) • Hospital Quality and Safety Outcomes (TJC, NQF, HCAHPS, CMS, GWTG, NDNQI) • Cardiac Process/Structure Hospital Quality and Safety Process/Structure Research shows that Blue Distinction Centers demonstrate improved patient outcomes, including lower rates of complications following certain cardiac procedures and lower rates of health care-associated infections as compared with their peers. 16 Spirit of St.Francis Spirit of St.Francis 17 New Noteworthy Center for Cardiac Care The St.Francis Center for Breast Health is the first facility in Georgia to offer Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS). ABUS offers more detailed imaging for detecting breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue. Forty percent of women have dense breasts, and cancer is four to six times more likely to occur in these women. Cancer in women with dense breast tissue can be difficult to detect with mammography alone. The Center for Breast Health is accredited by the American College of Radiology. It is staffed by an experienced team of board-certified physicians, registered mammographers, sonographers and a certified breast health navigator. For an appointment, call 706-257-7700. St.Francis Receives 2013-14 Consumer Choice Award For the ninth consecutive year, area consumers have chosen St. Francis Hospital as the area’s“Consumer Hospital of Choice,”according to data compiled by National Research Corporation (NRC). The award identi- fies hospitals that health care consumers have selected as having the highest quality and image in more than 300 markets throughout the United States. The award was announced October 21 in“Modern Healthcare.” Winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Ticker survey. The NRC study surveys more than 250,000 consumers in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia and is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive study of its kind. The study has a margin of error of + or – 0.2 percent at a national level. St. Francis Achieves Advanced Primary Stroke Center Re-certification St. Francis received re-certification as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center September 26, following a Joint Commission Survey. Certification will last two years. Surveyors evaluated all aspects of stroke care at St. Francis, visiting the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), ICU and 3 North. Only one requirement for improvement was cited. Surveyors noted these best practices related to stroke care at St. Francis: • Senior leaders at the opening session showed ownership of stroke care. • The ED staff was well aware of all of the rapidly changing protocols implemented in the ED. • The stroke patient education booklet with the perforated patient perception of care survey is innovative. • A strong commitment to community stroke education was evident. • The biggest best practice was the staff. They were comfortable talking with the surveyor, and their depth of knowledge regarding strokes was exceptional. Sleep Lab Earns Accreditation The St. Francis Sleep Disorders Lab earned accreditation by the American Association of Sleep Medicine (AASM) in October. AASM accreditation is the gold standard for evaluating sleep medicine services. Achieving AASM’s standards for accreditation ensure the medical community and the public that a sleep medicine provider demonstrates and maintains proficiency in testing procedures and policies, patient safety and follow-up, and physician and staff training. AASM accreditation reflects St. Francis’commitment to ensure that sleep disorders patients receive the highest quality of care. St. Francis Earns Total Hip and Knee Replacement Re-certifications St. Francis earned Joint Commission (JC) disease- specific re-certifications in both total hip and knee replacement in September. JC surveyors had no findings for St. Francis’total knee program and only one for the total hip program while evaluating the hospital’s protocols and processes September 20. Surveyors were particularly impressed by patient outcomes as well as innovative approaches to care. JC certification is the gold seal of approval for total hip and knee replacement.
