2. Introduction – History of the Internet
• The development of the internet started in the
late 60's in California by a few people but mainly
Robert Taylor and JCR Licklider who developed
the network idea called the Apranet. On 29th
October 1969 the first internet message was sent
from computer science Professor Leonard
Kleinrock's laboratory.
• Since then the internet has changed the world
and how we live!

4. Access to the internet
• Nowadays the internet is used for much much more
than sending messages, it's safe to say all our daily lives
need the internet. We rely on it for shopping, checking
the weather, reading the news, even searching for
things we need in our local area such as restaurants
hairdressers etc.
• In 1999 the average age of the internet customer was
40 - stereotypically older richer and could afford a PC.
(Digital Marketing Wind and Mahajan 2001) pg 213
• As of October 2018, there are more than 1.9 billion
websites on the Internet.
4
5. • We access the internet every day.. daily use has gone
from 2.7 hours a day in 2008 to 5.9 hours a day in
2017.
• This is from many devices - Phones, tablets desktops
and games consoles. Mobile access to the internet
alone has gone from 0.3 hours a day to 3.3 hours.

young children have at least 1!
7
10. • Mobile phones have been gaining website traffic year
on year - in 2009 only 0.7% of web traffic worldwide
was generated through mobile phones. This was
probably due to the slow internet connection and the
lack of mobile-friendly sites which hindered an easy
user experience.
• However, with technological advancements and the
strong growth of smartphones throughout the last 9
years, mobile internet use is much easier, quicker and
accessible.
• In 2017 mobile phones account for 50.3% of all web
traffic generated worldwide.

11. How consumers search for information
• Consumers use the internet as a first port of call – want to find a local restaurant – look online, a new dress go to
shopping, want know how to fix something go on you tube, want to now what’s in fashion browse Instagram,
check up what your friends are doing go on facebook....
• Based on a recent survey of Internet traffic, the 10 most popular uses of the Internet in descending order of use
are:
• Electronic mail. At least 85% of the inhabitants of cyberspace send and receive e-mail. Some 20 million e-mail
messages cross the Internet every week.
• Research.
• Downloading files.
• Discussion groups. These include public groups, such as those on Usenet, and the private mailing lists that ListServ
manages.
• Interactive games. Who hasn’t tried to hunt down at least one game?

• Friendship and dating. You may be surprised at the number of electronic "personals" that you can find on the
World Wide Web.
• Electronic newspapers and magazines. This category includes late-breaking news, weather, and sports. We’re
likely to see this category leap to the top five in the next several years.
• Job-hunting. Classified ads are in abundance, but most are for technical positions.
• Shopping. It’s difficult to believe that this category even ranks. It appears that "cybermalls" are more for curious
than serious shoppers.

14. What do we buy online?
• The most common thing we search for online are
brands, instead of going to 1 or 2 high street shops we
can search numerous retailers to get the best price for
our brand. The biggest market this applies to is the
electronic market as these are high value goods. This
has caused a significant downturn on the high street
and closure of many shops.
• This also applies to holidays and travel, very few people
use travel agents today to book holidays.
14
15. • We like buying online because we can also
read reviews of other people who bought
before us. We also use Instagram/You Tube
social media channels to see influencers'
wearing our clothes and makeup.
• We like the convenience of being able shop
from the comfort of our own home at a time
that is convenient for us.

16. Online Video Consumption
• We use videos for music, to make us laugh, learn how
to use something, fix something, watch a product
demo, even learn a skill.

internet.
• First video uploaded in 2005 of its owner at the zoo
