1. PEERS®
SOCIAL SKILLS GROUP FOR TEENS (AGES 11-17)
What is PEERS®? PEERS® is an evidence-based social skills program. During each group,
teens are taught important social skills and they practice these skills in session during
socialization activities. Parents attend separate sessions at the same time and are taught how
to assist their teens in making and keeping friends by helping to expand their teen’s social
network and providing feedback through coaching. Specifically, teens will learn:
• How to use appropriate conversational skills
• How to appropriately use humor
• How to handle rejection, teasing and bullying as well as rumors and gossip
• How to choose appropriate friends
• How to be a good host during get-togethers
• How to use social media appropriately with peers
• How to be a good sport and handle arguments and disagreements
• How to change a bad reputation
Who can participate? PEERS® may be appropriate for adolescents with autism spectrum
disorder (ASD), social communication disorder, ADHD, anxiety, depression & other social or
emotional challenges, who are motivated to make and keep friends. Parent participation is
required.
When & Where? Groups will be starting in February 2017 and will be held on Wednesdays
from 4:30-6:00pm in Greenwich, Connecticut.
PEERS® can also be implemented in the school directly.
