PLAN OF ACTION
SHEFFIELD HALLAM STUDENTS UNION
DISABLED STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE 2017/18
PLAN OF ACTION
CREATED FULLY BY KASHMIRE D.S HAWKER:
B.A (HONS) POLITICS STUDENT AT SHEFFIELD
HALLAM UNIVERSITY
A Few Words!
“I couldn’t be more humbled to have been given a full year, as Disabled Students
Rep, for the 2017/18 academic year!
Through everything in this mini booklet as of such and with the full support of
Hallam Union, fellow Reps and Officers; it’s my belief that the coming year will
be a huge stepping stone forward for every Disabled Student within Hallam.
Serving you all since October 21st 2016 has been truly brilliant and I say from
the deepest bits inside, that I will all in my powers to repay the trust placed in
me and I ask that you join and follow an adventure which has only just begun!”
Kashmire
My Vision: In Summary
• Continue and look to expand the Disabled Students Network; a monthly meeting of
which the aim is to improve student’s experiences to be the best
• Seek to Co-Produce events on a wide range of Disabilities, particularly Autism,
common Mental Health issues and some which are life limiting, but don’t stop people
living as ordinary life as possible
• Meet with Senior Management and directly state key concerns of as many Disabled
Students and therefore further stating their beliefs as a result
• Increasing opportunities for Disabled Students in Sport—and showcase their talents
• Always feedback to YOU - students and the electorate as well as those outside the
University and many others as regularly as possible
• Look to Seek Opportunities for those keen both Politically and within other areas - the
more engaged within pubic life: the better for all!
• AND also to consider the fantastic ideas and thoughts of fellow candidates and how to
take them forward together as a group - further cementing the vital use of
Co-Production
What’s Happened So Far?
Since October’s Election, I have had the fun of engaging with a great number
of students right across Sheffield Hallam, within several different ways and
manners. These activity’s have been:
• Established the monthly Disabled Students Network: a monthly roundtable, to see how
a collective can seek to improve Uni life through hearing their experiences and seeking
suggestions from attendees on how bring about required improvements
• Worked in partnership with Disabled Students Committee, which is running campaigns
to make students aware of various disabilities and the struggles disabled folk can face
• Been part of the Planning Group for University Mental Health Day on March 2nd,
which saw multiple events take place around specific areas of Mental Health and
hearing the brave stories of students, who fight a daily battle
• Disability Sports Awareness Week in February saw a series of inspiring events to high-
light how all students, whom self-define themselves as disabled can be active in sport
• Actively feeding back this work to students, within various Student Union Zones and
The Union Council—the highest decision making body of elected representatives in
Hallam Union
• Engaged in partnership with Disabled Student Support, to find potential areas for
strengthening and expansion
• Being engaged with UK wide activities, run by the National Union of Students
2017-18: Plan of Action—The Detail
The purpose of this is material to demonstrate the ambition I have within my veins—
through co-production, collaboration, constant engagement and listening in depth to
students stories, hopes and ambitions.
Knowing that 14% of students have declared to Hallam that they have a disability (Source:
Disabled Students Support Service) gives a great challenge - not just for myself, but
others in every elected position. From Sports to Student Support, and from the want for
Accessible Activities (Freshers and Varsity included) to the correct support by Lecturers
within sessions and assignment/exam periods: the mission is big, but can certainly be
achieved.
Representation
• Ensure there are formal Elections for the National Union of Students (NUS) Disabled Students Conference
2018, at least 2/3 months in advance
• Push for at least one space for NUS National Conference is reserved for a Self-Defining Disabled person
• Encourage all Election Candidates for the post of Disabled Students Rep, to join Disabled Students Committee
• To meet Vice-Chancellor Chris Husbands; with fellow Disabled Students to directly raise legitimate concerns
and issues, which require urgent action
• Continue and reform the Disabled Students Network—a monthly opening meeting to any Disabled Students,
of which will be a forum for Disabled Students to state their experiences and bring ideas to the table
• Forge a strong partnership with Disabled Students Committee, on a wide range of topics and possible events
Practical Measures
• Fully open and make known the availability of a Disabled and Gender Neutral Toilet within The Hubs; push
this right across SHU where opportunities arise
• Work with Officers on a number of ways of keeping events and accessibility to The Hubs as accessible as
possible; I.E the introduction to BSL clapping to events such as Election Results night
• Help train staff within the next academic year, to inform them of ways in which fellow disabled students
communicate and how to effectively communicate with them
• Seek to carry out an “accessibility audit” in all teaching buildings at Hallam, along with many fellow disabled
students, and point out flaws of which Hallam can rectify relatively quickly—and over an 18 month period
Events, Wider Engagement and Opportunities— In Hallam, Sheffield and Beyond!
Hundreds of events take place either at Hallam or see Hallam students attend and be engaged with
a wider group. Ensuring fellow disabled students can play there part—as well as seeing the amazing
work of others showcased and working with folk, in Hallam, Sheffield and around the nation is criti-
cal, to ensuring things can change and Disabled Students Lives can be made THE BEST.
Events
• Support the Committee’s “Me and My Disability Week” - of
which engaged hundreds of disabled students in March 2017
• Ensure the continuation of Disability in Sports Week and seek
to develop it into a celebration of achievements
• A series of Welcome Week events, which make new Disabled
Students feel at home and give them opportunities to mix in
with others, in safe environment
• Be part of Planning Committee of Uni Mental Health Day 2018
• Host an Awards evening towards the end of the academic
year—highlighting hard work undertaken
Local Engagement
• Develop links with Sheffield based Disability charities
• Seek to highlight the outstanding work of organisations right
around the city, through inviting them to stage events within
The Hubs and other University buildings
• Engage with Sheffield City Council within projects or respond
to policy, of which may have an impact on for all students
across the city—as well as work with them on a Accessibility
Audit for Student Accommodation right across the city
• Attend events across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, with
fellow Disabled Students voices and thus gives us an
opportunity to ensure our voices are made loud and clear
• Work with Sheffield Hallam’s new Member of Parliament -
Jared O’Mara, on disability related issues
Opportunities
• Seek to form alliances with charities and organisations linked into Hallam Union
• Open up chances for work placements, experiences and volunteering through those links in place; and as a result
giving Disabled students in every corner Hallam many doors to possibly open
• Work with nationally recognised employers in Sheffield, on ensuring disabled employees are treated within the law
and highlight outstanding case studies
• See what can be done within Hallam Union and SHU to increase the number of disabled employees, as well as ways
of supporting them
Disabled Students in Sports Society
• Form a Disabled Students Sports Society and operational Committee – an all year-round group, which can be part
of the DSSW organisation
• Society would be welcome to all – particularly to those who have an interest with Sports and Disabled people
• This would be a legacy of the work between myself & Outgoing Sports Officer—Laura Baggs through 2016/17, as
well continuing what was started whilst both in post
Disability in Sports Week 2018
• Having focus on Activity and Awareness
• Garner the interest of University through range of events – I.E tasters of Wheelchair Basketball
• Invite Guest Speakers to share their stories of involvement
• Link it in to Charity Fundraising throughout the week – as well as for Sheffield and South Yorkshire based Sports
Teams
• Between 6/8 events throughout the 5 days and spread at both campuses and SHSU
Sheffield Varsity 2018
• Get Disabled sports into the Varsity Calendar, to show off Disability sports to students – this would bring a new
audience; sports could include Wheelchair Basketball, a range of disability Athletics and Football
• Big screen for as many Varsity events as possible in The Hubs and at two central locations at both Campus sites
• Work with the Varsity Committee to further increase participation of Disabled people, through what is the biggest
annual showcase of Student Sport across the City
Disability in Sport: Thinking Big and Bold
A backbone to Sheffield Hallam and University Experiences in general, is the huge range of Sporting
activity on offer.
However, it is seriously evident that Disability Sport at the majority of UK University’s lacks—and lacks
very badly. This makes my blood boil, as the amazing talent which exists at Hallam and widely, should
be for all eye’s see and all ears to hear.
Meeting several students throughout the year including soon to be Graduated, UK Champion
Racerunner Ellie Simpson has given me a huge stack of inspiration to not only work from, but also seek
to use and help build a major Disability Sports movement at SHU.
As a result of this determination, the three sections below are a bold and progressive package agreed
between myself and 2017/18 Sports Officer Joshua Nimmins, of which we both believe is the start of
increasing participation, allowing them to show their wonderful talents and let others: of whom are
interested to watch on, within a safe and recognised environment.
Taking Forward Ideas of Fellow Candidates
The election in March was fought in a incredibly good natured, determined and spirited manner, with
each of us Four candidates putting forward an excellent range of ideas and a massive range of
progressive thinking.
Being someone who wants to see the best for each and every disabled student, the vast range of
things proposed by Sinem Salman, Kyle Bolan And Sebastian Mangham impressed my eyes greatly. As
a result, I intend to meet with all three of them as a group come the start of the academic year, to see
how their thinking and ideas can be taken forward—both individually and as a collective bunch.
Sinem Salman’s
Manifesto, of which was
Runner-Up in the
Election
Sebastian Mangham’s
Manifesto, which
finished 3rd
Kyle Bolan’s Manifesto, which put him in 4th and final place
Keeping You Informed!
Up on Self-Reflecting 1st year, I honestly feel I can do a lot more on keeping you all informed on the work
I undertake within the post. At the end of the day, stating to you all what I have done couldn’t be more
crucial, to knowing what an elected representative has got up to and therefore allowing you to holding
me to account.
As a result, I pledge the following of which will occur from Day 1:
• Regularly tweet from the Representatives Twitter Account: @HallamDisabledR and from my own
public Facebook page: Kashmire D.S Hawker - University and Youth Representative
• Ensure these updates aren’t just statuses of writing, but also include imagery, videos and other big
material when needed
• A monthly post via Hallam Union’s new and updated website, of which is due to launch in August
2017
• Short YouTube video every 2/3 weeks, which informs a large section of the wider public of my work
and actions
• Maybe a few surprises throughout the year too…
On top of the above, I ask that if anyone has any concerns, thoughts, ideas and suggestions, that be sent
to my Representative email account, which will be below along with social media details. Never hesitate
to contact myself at any time, as the more things I hear, the better!

To have “the opportunity to serve” is once again a truly humbling feeling; as well as a
challenge and something I shall always grasp. And I know with your help, the lives of all
Disabled Students at one of the most creative, down to earth and open academic
cathedrals in the United Kingdom: can over time—and particularly through 2017/18 be-
come THE BEST!

Sheffield Hallam Students Union - Disabled Students Representative 2017/18 Plan of Action

  • 1. KASHMIRE DARREN SINGH HAWKER SHEFFIELD HALLAM STUDENTS UNION DISABLED STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE 2017/18 PLAN OF ACTION
  • 2. SHEFFIELD HALLAM STUDENTS UNION DISABLED STUDENTS REPRESENTATIVE 2017/18 PLAN OF ACTION CREATED FULLY BY KASHMIRE D.S HAWKER: B.A (HONS) POLITICS STUDENT AT SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY
  • 3. A Few Words! “I couldn’t be more humbled to have been given a full year, as Disabled Students Rep, for the 2017/18 academic year! Through everything in this mini booklet as of such and with the full support of Hallam Union, fellow Reps and Officers; it’s my belief that the coming year will be a huge stepping stone forward for every Disabled Student within Hallam. Serving you all since October 21st 2016 has been truly brilliant and I say from the deepest bits inside, that I will all in my powers to repay the trust placed in me and I ask that you join and follow an adventure which has only just begun!” Kashmire My Vision: In Summary • Continue and look to expand the Disabled Students Network; a monthly meeting of which the aim is to improve student’s experiences to be the best • Seek to Co-Produce events on a wide range of Disabilities, particularly Autism, common Mental Health issues and some which are life limiting, but don’t stop people living as ordinary life as possible • Meet with Senior Management and directly state key concerns of as many Disabled Students and therefore further stating their beliefs as a result • Increasing opportunities for Disabled Students in Sport—and showcase their talents • Always feedback to YOU - students and the electorate as well as those outside the University and many others as regularly as possible • Look to Seek Opportunities for those keen both Politically and within other areas - the more engaged within pubic life: the better for all! • AND also to consider the fantastic ideas and thoughts of fellow candidates and how to take them forward together as a group - further cementing the vital use of Co-Production
  • 4. What’s Happened So Far? Since October’s Election, I have had the fun of engaging with a great number of students right across Sheffield Hallam, within several different ways and manners. These activity’s have been: • Established the monthly Disabled Students Network: a monthly roundtable, to see how a collective can seek to improve Uni life through hearing their experiences and seeking suggestions from attendees on how bring about required improvements • Worked in partnership with Disabled Students Committee, which is running campaigns to make students aware of various disabilities and the struggles disabled folk can face • Been part of the Planning Group for University Mental Health Day on March 2nd, which saw multiple events take place around specific areas of Mental Health and hearing the brave stories of students, who fight a daily battle • Disability Sports Awareness Week in February saw a series of inspiring events to high- light how all students, whom self-define themselves as disabled can be active in sport • Actively feeding back this work to students, within various Student Union Zones and The Union Council—the highest decision making body of elected representatives in Hallam Union • Engaged in partnership with Disabled Student Support, to find potential areas for strengthening and expansion • Being engaged with UK wide activities, run by the National Union of Students
  • 5. 2017-18: Plan of Action—The Detail The purpose of this is material to demonstrate the ambition I have within my veins— through co-production, collaboration, constant engagement and listening in depth to students stories, hopes and ambitions. Knowing that 14% of students have declared to Hallam that they have a disability (Source: Disabled Students Support Service) gives a great challenge - not just for myself, but others in every elected position. From Sports to Student Support, and from the want for Accessible Activities (Freshers and Varsity included) to the correct support by Lecturers within sessions and assignment/exam periods: the mission is big, but can certainly be achieved. Representation • Ensure there are formal Elections for the National Union of Students (NUS) Disabled Students Conference 2018, at least 2/3 months in advance • Push for at least one space for NUS National Conference is reserved for a Self-Defining Disabled person • Encourage all Election Candidates for the post of Disabled Students Rep, to join Disabled Students Committee • To meet Vice-Chancellor Chris Husbands; with fellow Disabled Students to directly raise legitimate concerns and issues, which require urgent action • Continue and reform the Disabled Students Network—a monthly opening meeting to any Disabled Students, of which will be a forum for Disabled Students to state their experiences and bring ideas to the table • Forge a strong partnership with Disabled Students Committee, on a wide range of topics and possible events Practical Measures • Fully open and make known the availability of a Disabled and Gender Neutral Toilet within The Hubs; push this right across SHU where opportunities arise • Work with Officers on a number of ways of keeping events and accessibility to The Hubs as accessible as possible; I.E the introduction to BSL clapping to events such as Election Results night • Help train staff within the next academic year, to inform them of ways in which fellow disabled students communicate and how to effectively communicate with them • Seek to carry out an “accessibility audit” in all teaching buildings at Hallam, along with many fellow disabled students, and point out flaws of which Hallam can rectify relatively quickly—and over an 18 month period
  • 6. Events, Wider Engagement and Opportunities— In Hallam, Sheffield and Beyond! Hundreds of events take place either at Hallam or see Hallam students attend and be engaged with a wider group. Ensuring fellow disabled students can play there part—as well as seeing the amazing work of others showcased and working with folk, in Hallam, Sheffield and around the nation is criti- cal, to ensuring things can change and Disabled Students Lives can be made THE BEST. Events • Support the Committee’s “Me and My Disability Week” - of which engaged hundreds of disabled students in March 2017 • Ensure the continuation of Disability in Sports Week and seek to develop it into a celebration of achievements • A series of Welcome Week events, which make new Disabled Students feel at home and give them opportunities to mix in with others, in safe environment • Be part of Planning Committee of Uni Mental Health Day 2018 • Host an Awards evening towards the end of the academic year—highlighting hard work undertaken Local Engagement • Develop links with Sheffield based Disability charities • Seek to highlight the outstanding work of organisations right around the city, through inviting them to stage events within The Hubs and other University buildings • Engage with Sheffield City Council within projects or respond to policy, of which may have an impact on for all students across the city—as well as work with them on a Accessibility Audit for Student Accommodation right across the city • Attend events across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, with fellow Disabled Students voices and thus gives us an opportunity to ensure our voices are made loud and clear • Work with Sheffield Hallam’s new Member of Parliament - Jared O’Mara, on disability related issues Opportunities • Seek to form alliances with charities and organisations linked into Hallam Union • Open up chances for work placements, experiences and volunteering through those links in place; and as a result giving Disabled students in every corner Hallam many doors to possibly open • Work with nationally recognised employers in Sheffield, on ensuring disabled employees are treated within the law and highlight outstanding case studies • See what can be done within Hallam Union and SHU to increase the number of disabled employees, as well as ways of supporting them
  • 7. Disabled Students in Sports Society • Form a Disabled Students Sports Society and operational Committee – an all year-round group, which can be part of the DSSW organisation • Society would be welcome to all – particularly to those who have an interest with Sports and Disabled people • This would be a legacy of the work between myself & Outgoing Sports Officer—Laura Baggs through 2016/17, as well continuing what was started whilst both in post Disability in Sports Week 2018 • Having focus on Activity and Awareness • Garner the interest of University through range of events – I.E tasters of Wheelchair Basketball • Invite Guest Speakers to share their stories of involvement • Link it in to Charity Fundraising throughout the week – as well as for Sheffield and South Yorkshire based Sports Teams • Between 6/8 events throughout the 5 days and spread at both campuses and SHSU Sheffield Varsity 2018 • Get Disabled sports into the Varsity Calendar, to show off Disability sports to students – this would bring a new audience; sports could include Wheelchair Basketball, a range of disability Athletics and Football • Big screen for as many Varsity events as possible in The Hubs and at two central locations at both Campus sites • Work with the Varsity Committee to further increase participation of Disabled people, through what is the biggest annual showcase of Student Sport across the City Disability in Sport: Thinking Big and Bold A backbone to Sheffield Hallam and University Experiences in general, is the huge range of Sporting activity on offer. However, it is seriously evident that Disability Sport at the majority of UK University’s lacks—and lacks very badly. This makes my blood boil, as the amazing talent which exists at Hallam and widely, should be for all eye’s see and all ears to hear. Meeting several students throughout the year including soon to be Graduated, UK Champion Racerunner Ellie Simpson has given me a huge stack of inspiration to not only work from, but also seek to use and help build a major Disability Sports movement at SHU. As a result of this determination, the three sections below are a bold and progressive package agreed between myself and 2017/18 Sports Officer Joshua Nimmins, of which we both believe is the start of increasing participation, allowing them to show their wonderful talents and let others: of whom are interested to watch on, within a safe and recognised environment.
  • 8. Taking Forward Ideas of Fellow Candidates The election in March was fought in a incredibly good natured, determined and spirited manner, with each of us Four candidates putting forward an excellent range of ideas and a massive range of progressive thinking. Being someone who wants to see the best for each and every disabled student, the vast range of things proposed by Sinem Salman, Kyle Bolan And Sebastian Mangham impressed my eyes greatly. As a result, I intend to meet with all three of them as a group come the start of the academic year, to see how their thinking and ideas can be taken forward—both individually and as a collective bunch. Sinem Salman’s Manifesto, of which was Runner-Up in the Election Sebastian Mangham’s Manifesto, which finished 3rd Kyle Bolan’s Manifesto, which put him in 4th and final place
  • 9. Keeping You Informed! Up on Self-Reflecting 1st year, I honestly feel I can do a lot more on keeping you all informed on the work I undertake within the post. At the end of the day, stating to you all what I have done couldn’t be more crucial, to knowing what an elected representative has got up to and therefore allowing you to holding me to account. As a result, I pledge the following of which will occur from Day 1: • Regularly tweet from the Representatives Twitter Account: @HallamDisabledR and from my own public Facebook page: Kashmire D.S Hawker - University and Youth Representative • Ensure these updates aren’t just statuses of writing, but also include imagery, videos and other big material when needed • A monthly post via Hallam Union’s new and updated website, of which is due to launch in August 2017 • Short YouTube video every 2/3 weeks, which informs a large section of the wider public of my work and actions • Maybe a few surprises throughout the year too… On top of the above, I ask that if anyone has any concerns, thoughts, ideas and suggestions, that be sent to my Representative email account, which will be below along with social media details. Never hesitate to contact myself at any time, as the more things I hear, the better! uusdisabledstudents@shu.ac.uk @HallamDisabledR @KDSHawker (personal account) Kashmire D.S Hawker—University and Youth Representative For any correspondence via post, the address is: Kashmire D.S Hawker Disabled Students Representative Sheffield Hallam Students Union The HUBS 6 Paternoster Row Sheffield S1 2QQ
  • 10. To have “the opportunity to serve” is once again a truly humbling feeling; as well as a challenge and something I shall always grasp. And I know with your help, the lives of all Disabled Students at one of the most creative, down to earth and open academic cathedrals in the United Kingdom: can over time—and particularly through 2017/18 be- come THE BEST!
